This work represents a study of the biological oxidation of copper sulfide minerals. The principal objective of the study was to determine the extent of bacterial oxidation on copper containing sulfide minerals. It was also desired to determine if the bacteria could oxidize copper sulfides in the absence of iron. A better understanding of the nitrogen requirements of the organisms was desired. Minerals used in this study were Bingham Canyon Float Concentrate, chalcopyrite, covellite, calcocite, bornite, tetrahedrite, and reagent grade copper sulfide. This paper deals with the complete skeletal anatomy ot Bolitoglossa rufescena (Cope). All parts are figured and described. In addition to this many of the main skeletal parts of Bolitoglossa platydactyla (Cuvier) Bolitoglossa occidentalis Taylor, and Bolitoglossa flaviventris (Schmidt) are described and figured. A comparison of the following parts of the above mentioned salamanders is presented: skull, atlas, ninth trunk vertebra, sixth caudal vertebra, carpals, tarsals and digits. The similarities and differences are pointed out as they appeared to the author. The relationship and specialization ot these species is discussed rather briefly.

The disease itself has been recognized since 1873, being first known from the Bitter Root Valley of Montana. The first medical record, however, was reported from Idaho by Wood (1896).

The literature survey reveals little information relating directly to deinking waste. This waste is composed mostly of coating and filling pigments such as clays and calcium carbonate therefore a study was made along these lines. Hauser (8), and other colloidal chemist, generally agree that clay and other pigment suspensions can be dispersed with certain chemical additives. This is said to be attributed to the active forces of repulsion between the particles which in turn produce a marked effect upon the flow properties. The manufacturers of latices uncovered a new market by fostering developmental research in the field of pigment coating binders. Polyvinyl acetate latices were one of the group of products studied in this manner.

A literature survey is presented concerning the yellowing of paper with age and the relationships of rosin, light, and iron as factors in inducing this discoloration. The recent chemical modifications of rosin which are applicable for use in the sizing of paper are investigated with the intent of discerning whether or not they exhibit sufficient improvement in color-brightness stability over that of natural rosin to warrant their use in certain high quality papers.

The literature survey shows that very little work has been published concerning the effect of the variables of supercalendering on paper. In this investigation, a study is made of the effect of varied supercalendering pressures on 50 percent rag ledger and coated folder paper. The experimental results show that definite trends were established on physical strength and optical properties when supercalender pressure w as increased.

The work on this thesis has been conducted for the purpose of investigating the effect of two variables on the printability of a bleached softwood sulphate sheet; using a moisture setting ink. The two variables are: (1) rosin sizing, (2) furnish, namely, varying amounts of bleached hardwood sulphate fibers.

Handsheets were made in the laboratory with four levels of rosin sizing. and increasing amounts of hardwood fibers. The amounts of hardwood fibers ranged from zero to 100 percent with two intermediate percentages.

In this study, the spermathecae of sixty-eight species of Coleoptera, representing fifty-one genera and twenty-three families, were examined and are listed in the order they appear in Leng's Catalogue of the North American Coleoptera. An examination was made of ninety-five specimens of four different species to check for variation within the species. In only one species was there a departure from the pattern characteristic of the genus. Ther spermatheca is differentiated into the cornu, the nodulus and ramus. The secretions of the adrenal medulla account for many of the instantaneous responses of the animal body to various stimuli, but it has not been established that such secretions play any significant role in the endocrine regulation of salt and water metabolism. This paper records the first study of Collembola ever made in the Sandia Mountains and one of the first ever made in New Mexico even though the state presents excellent opportunities for study of this order. The Sandia Mountains are an ecologist’s paradise and it is probable that two hundred or more species of Collembola occur in this region alone. The entire state of New Mexico, possessing the extremes of elevation and the large geographical extent necessary to produce a great diversity of habitat types, probably contains nearly twice this number.
