Implementation of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) is now a curriculum priority for school districts across the United States. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are exploring ways to incorporate the CCSS into their assessment and therapy practices. Literature centered on the development of language goals aligned with the CCSS for English language arts (ELA) was limited. The purpose of this study was to identify if SLPs working in public elementary and middle school settings had adopted the practice of aligning their language-intervention goals to the CCSS for ELA for students on their caseloads. All The World's A Page: Towards A Definition Of 'Writer' In An Age Of Opportunity, Sue Norton

This article considers the status of the writer at a time when publication is no longer elusive, given the immediacy of online dissemination. For those who identify as writers, it looks at the implications of blogging, social media, entrepreneurial self-publishing, and scholarly open access journals, including so-called ‘predatory’ ones. It argues for a distinction between day-to-day writing and composition, and seeks to establish a category for the writer that takes account of deliberation, craft, and readership. It juxtaposes the creative activity of Jack Kerouac, Virginia Woolf, Truman Capote, and Mother Goose against the linguist John McWhorter’s convincing dismissal of the …

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
In Loyola High School, et al. v. Attorney General of Quebec, the Supreme Court of Canada held that the government of Quebec could not require a Catholic high school to teach Catholic religion and ethics from a non-Catholic perspective. The government could, however, require the school to teach other religions from a “neutral” perspective. This article takes Loyola as an opportunity to examine two ways that courts have justified limits on religious freedom. First, I interrogate an under-examined aspect of the law of religious freedom: the requirement that claimants prove the interference with their religious freedom is “more than trivial …

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
In November 2013, the Parti Québécois introduced the Charter affirming the values of State secularism and religious neutrality and of equality between women and men, and providing a framework for accommodation requests (also known as Bill 60). This proposed piece of legislation would substantially alter how public services are offered and received in Québec. This article argues that this legislative project was much more than a simple law, and rather, as discussed, about reconfiguring the constitutional relationship that Quebecers entertain with the rest of Canada. As such, it engages with the constitutional “misadventures”, as experienced in Quebec in 2013-2014. Drawing …

Literacy: Varied, Dynamic, And Multidimensional, Stephen B. Kucer Dr.
Journal of Family Strengths
This article examines the complex nature of literacy through a variety of lenses. The linguistic lens focuses on literacy as a language and multimodal process. The cognitive reveals the mental processes and strategies readers and writers employ to construct meanings through the linguistic and multimodal dimension. Not just a linguistic and cognitive process, the sociocultural lens examines literacy use within social and cultural contexts. Finally, the developmental lens explores the very active nature of literacy learners and their mediators.

In her article "Ethical Transformations in Yan's陆犯焉识 (The Criminal Lu Yanshi)" Weihong Zhu uses ethical literary criticism to explain the reason for the change in attitude which the novel's hero undergoes. Zhu argues that in Geling Yan's novel the turning point lies in the protagonist's realization of his inner "animal" factor. Subjected to severe tests by the extreme circumstances in a northwest prison in China, this realization helps him transform from a proud man to a humble human being, so that he learns to love his family. In her article "Narrative Ethics and Alterity in Adichie's Novel Americanah" Nora Berning analyses Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's novel through the lens of a narrative ethics of alterity. Focusing on the notion of alterity, Berning argues that a specific turn-of-the-century ethics emerges in contemporary fictions of migration in general and in intercultural novels in particular. An ethical genre in its own right, such twenty-first century fictions as Americanah generate a particular kind of ethical knowledge that revolves around questions of identity and alterity and around individual and collective perceptions of self and other. Five Latina mothers were engaged in pláticas literarias/literature discussions about Latino children’s literature at their children’s school. The pláticas served as means to build the links from personal experiences to school learning and to help the mothers recognize that their ways of knowing and making meaning of the world-their multiliteracies-are tools from which their children will and do learn. Healthy People 2020 and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) define health literacy as the “degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions.” Essential components of health literacy include oral and print literacy, numeracy, and cultural and conceptual knowledge; the latter is influenced by sociodemographic factors and cultural understandings and approaches to concepts such as healthcare. This article uses the Supreme Court of Canada’s Reference re Senate Reform as a basis for arguing that metaphors are not always appropriate in constitutional adjudication. In that decision, the Court relies on the metaphor of “constitutional architecture” ten times (11 if a subheading is counted). Despite the multiple references, the Court leaves unanswered questions about what the architecture metaphor is doing. Does it help to clarify? Is it the same or different from the text itself? The change of the status of the National Exam (NE) from high-stakes testing to low-stakes testing inspired the researchers to explore its effects on the teaching and learning of English. This qualitative exploratory study tried to investigate how English teachers taught their students to prepare NE at senior high schools in two different functions by involving six English teachers from three schools varying in the quality in terms of the schools' demography, academic achievement, and facilities. Unaccompanied minor asylum seekers are vulnerable and thus, provided special international law protections. However, in reality, they are being mistreated as illegal immigrants and on the receiving end of ethnic violence, discrimination, restrictions in enjoyment of their rights duly recognised by international human rights law. This article identifies legislative, policy and support mechanisms which encompass the minimum UMAS guardianship standards at international law and which are evidence-based from best practice models for the provision of guardians for UMAS internationally. Although the Constitution did not declare English the official language of the United States, its complete linguistic dominance in such a linguistically diverse nation is unparalleled. ABSTRACT
This critical literature review was conducted to identify both individual- and environmental-level social determinants of health using an ecological framework as a way to contextualize risk for, and distributions of, late HIV diagnosis among African Americans and Latinos in the United States.
Background: Late diagnosis, defined as a diagnosis of AIDS simultaneously with or within one year of an initial HIV diagnosis,1 disproportionately affects African American and Latino communities;2,3 disparities in this health problem thus represent a preventable inequity. This article offers theoretical and practical strategies for engaging families, communities, and young children in culturally relevant and responsive early literacies. The authors highlight findings from data collected in their own classrooms and with families and communities for the Professional Dyads in Culturally Relevant (PDCRT) teaching project,[1] a collaborative research partnership (2013-2015) between teacher educator-teacher dads [2] aimed at generating, investigating, and documenting culturally relevant/responsive practices for early childhood contexts.

It begins with an overview of the authors’ experiences and perspectives related to social studies and critical literacy. This article is explain of ritual commucation pilgrim "ngalap berkah" in the Kemukus mountain, ethnographic study of communication about cultural tourism zone ritual pilgrimage in Mount Kemukus, Pendem Village, District Sumber Lawang, Sragen, Central Java. The results showed that for the local community a message of what is hidden behind this ritual is still ambiguity. But in the process of social interaction between indigenous communities with immigrant communities, both in terms of livelihoods, different behavior patterns, causing local people trying to accept changes to the meaning of "ngalap berkah".
