Tuning Into The Future: Sharing Initial Insights About The 2012 Musical Futures Pilot Project In Ontario, Betty Anne Younker, Ruth Wright, Leslie Linton, Carol Beynon

This article reports on a pilot research project introducing informal music pedagogy developed by Professor Lucy Green to two Ontario schools. Developed from the observed learning practices of popular musicians, the pedagogy locates production and development of musical knowledge firmly with the students. The research team's initial training visit to the UK is reported upon. The research questions and methodology for the project are presented and some initial observations from the early stages of the Canadian implementation project are discussed.

Background: The purpose of this article is to report additional data gathered during the National Council of State Boards of Nursing 2010 nationwide simulation survey of 1,729 nursing programs in the United States. It serves as a companion article to the initial survey data reported by Hayden in 2010.

Method: All prelicensure nursing programs in the United States were mailed the survey; 62% of programs (N ¼ 1,060) receiving the survey responded. This article reports the results of the Teacher Education and Development Study in Mathematics (TEDS-M) that are related to prospective primary teachers’ knowledge for teaching mathematics. TEDS-M was conducted under the auspices of the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement with additional support from the US. National Science Foundation and the participating countries. In 2008 more than 15,000 future primary teachers, enrolled in about 450 institutions that prepare future primary teachers, were surveyed. The IEA Teacher Education and Development Study in Mathematics (TEDS-M 2008) was a comparative study of primary and secondary mathematics teacher education. It examined how different countries prepared teachers to teach mathematics in primary and lower-secondary schools.

TEDS-M paid particular attention to links between teacher education policies, practices, and outcomes. TEDS-M asked several key research questions:

This study examined the relationship between the neighborhood food environment and the food purchasing behaviors among adolescents. Grade 7 and 8 students (n = 810) at 21 elementary schools in London, Ontario, Canada completed a questionnaire assessing their food purchasing behaviors. Parents of participants also completed a brief questionnaire providing residential address and demographic information. A Geographic Information System (GIS) was used to assess students’ home and school neighborhood food environment and land use characteristics. BACKGROUND

Higher education is increasingly a global business. At present, university ranking schemes are heavily reliant on research indicators, while students are likely looking for an excellent teaching and learning environment. Aware of this discrepancy, the OECD has funded the AHELO project.

PURPOSE

AHELO was designed to test the feasibility of an international assessment of higher education learning outcomes. The two test disciplines are civil engineering and economics, together with an assessment of generic skills. The civil engineering test will be reported in this paper.

The purpose of the study described in this article was to assess the walkability and bikeability of 15 U.S. postsecondary education campuses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's evidence-based Healthier Worksite Initiative Walkability Audit was modified to rate campus walking and biking path segments for path safety, quality, and comfort. Universities (n = 13) assessed an average of 44 path segments, which earned a mean score of 72.71 +/- 10.77 SD (possible range 0 to 100). At the recent AusAID sponsored UN Strategy and Coordination Conference on the Regional Capacity to Protect, Prevent and Respond (May 17-18, Bangkok), the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative on Responsibility to Protect (R2P), Edward Luck, noted that while the three pillars of R2P are becoming better known, 90% of the academic work is on Pillar III (Intervention), even though it is comparatively rare. This briefing paper provides a short background to the 2012 elections in Timor-Leste, and explores the UNPOL mandate to support and build the capacity of the Polícia Nacional de Timor-Leste (PNTL – the Timor-Leste National Police), so that Timor-Leste will be able to manage security for its citizens without international assistance. Based on fieldwork conducted during June 2012, including interviews with human rights-focused NGOs, and with international police implementing bilateral and multilateral capacity building, we argue that the 3,200-3,400 strong PNTL is theoretically ready to go it alone when the UN Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste departs, and explore questions as …

The emphasis on testing in curricular content areas has left little room in most U.S. schools for education in the arts. Yet research supports the pedagogical value of aesthetic education, particularly for English learners (ELs), whose representation in schools continues to increase. Previous research has shown raising a young child with a disability, such as an ASD, gives parents a unique set of challenges that impact their family including relationships among family members. Parents of young children with an ASD may experience many stressors. Some causes of stress when raising a child with an ASD are medical decisions, behavioral challenges, and financial impact. In their first twenty years (1975-1995), the federal rules of evidence changed little. However, changes have accelerated since 1993, with creation of the Evidence Rules Advisory Committee which meets regularly and proposes changes to the rules almost every year. One change, which grew out of the work of a special committee, was the addition of an entirely new provision, Rule 502, which governs waiver of attorney-client privilege. This rule became law in 2008 through congressional enactment (privilege rules must be passed by Congress in order to take effect). Sections 5:34 discusses this new provision. The purpose of this qualitative study was to conduct a formative evaluation of messages and materials to inform the development of a promotional, health campaign designed to increase breast cancer screening awareness and utilization among low-income, uninsured African American women through the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP) in Savannah and Macon, Georgia (GA). A priority of CDC is to understand why women eligible for screening through the NBCCEDP do not participate in NBCCEDP screening services as well as to identify effective strategies for increasing enrollment among NBCCEDP-eligible women who have never received breast cancer screening.
