Synthesis Of Indolizines And Benzoindolizines By Annulation Of Donor-Acceptor Cyclopropanes With Electron-Deficient Pyridines And Quinolines, Nicholas A. Morra, Christian L. Morales, Barbora Bajtos, Xin Wang, Hyosook Jang, Jian Wang, Brian Pagenkopf

Chemistry Publications

The formal [3+2] dipolar cycloaddition (or annulation) of donor-acceptor cyclopropanoate esters with pyridines and 5-nitroquinoline is reported. Electron-deficient pyridine dipolarophiles (R=CN, CO2Et, COMe) participate in the annulation whereas electron rich species do not. The product 2,3-dihydroindolizines undergo rapid autooxidation, and the X-ray structures for two of the aromatic products are reported.

Fgf4 And Wnt5a/Pcp Signaling Promote Limb Outgrowth By Polarizing Limb Mesenchyme, Keri Lynn Low Nov 2006

Fgf4 And Wnt5a/Pcp Signaling Promote Limb Outgrowth By Polarizing Limb Mesenchyme, Keri Lynn Low

Theses and Dissertations

The focus of this study was to elucidate the molecular and cellular mechanisms whereby fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) mediate outgrowth of the limb. Specifically, we examined the epistatic relationship between FGF and Wnt/Planar cell polarity (PCP) signaling in establishing cell polarity as a mechanism for outgrowth. By implanting beads into embryonic limbs and lateral plate mesoderm, we established that FGF activates Wnt5a in a gradient fashion. Once it was established that Wnt5a was expressed at the right time and place to turn on PCP signaling, we investigated the ability of Wnt5a to influence cell migration and/or cell polarity. Our analysis …

Consolidation And Interweaving Of Composite Members By A Continuous Manufacturing Process, Sarita L. Kesler Nov 2006

Consolidation And Interweaving Of Composite Members By A Continuous Manufacturing Process, Sarita L. Kesler

Theses and Dissertations

Recent research and development has resulted in a working prototype of an automated process for manufacturing IsoTruss® and other innovative open lattice composite structures which yields faster, and more predictable and consistent parts, while automatically consolidating individual members. This machine is sufficiently versatile to manufacture any type of open lattice structure fabricated from filamentary composite materials. The objectives of the research in this thesis were two-fold: (1) to validate this new process for making IsoTruss structures; and (2) to measure the compression strength and stiffness of specimens produced on the machine. In order to accomplish the first purpose, various parts …

Nucleolin Is Required For Rna Polymerase I Transcription In Vivo, Brendan Rickards, S. Flint, Michael D. Cole, Gary Leroy Nov 2006

Nucleolin Is Required For Rna Polymerase I Transcription In Vivo, Brendan Rickards, S. Flint, Michael D. Cole, Gary Leroy

Dartmouth Scholarship

Eukaryotic genomes are packaged with histones and accessory proteins in the form of chromatin. RNA polymerases and their accessory proteins are sufficient for transcription of naked DNA, but not of chromatin, templates in vitro. In this study, we purified and identified nucleolin as a protein that allows RNA polymerase II to transcribe nucleosomal templates in vitro. As immunofluorescence confirmed that nucleolin localizes primarily to nucleoli with RNA polymerase I, we demonstrated that nucleolin allows RNA polymerase I transcription of chromatin templates in vitro. The results of chromatin immunoprecipitation experiments established that nucleolin is associated with chromatin containing rRNA genes transcribed …

Krf Excimer Laser-Assisted Combustion-Flame Deposition Of Diamond Films, Y. X. Han, Hao Ling, Yongfeng Lu Nov 2006

Krf Excimer Laser-Assisted Combustion-Flame Deposition Of Diamond Films, Y. X. Han, Hao Ling, Yongfeng Lu

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Cobalt (Co) composition has detrimental effects on the deposition of diamond films on cemented tungsten carbide (WC-Co) substrates. It decreases adhesion of the deposited films to the substrates and causes a transformation of sp3-bonded diamond to sp2-bonded graphite. In this study, a KrF excimer laser with a wavelength of 248 nm, a pulse width of 23 ns, and a pulse energy range of 84–450 mJ was used in the combustion-flame method to improve the quality of the deposited diamond films. Scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray analysis, and Raman spectroscopy of the deposited films showed that …

Do Juries Add Value?: Evidence From An Empirical Study Of Jury Trial Waiver Clauses In Large Corporate Contracts, Theodore Eisenberg, Geoffrey P. Miller Nov 2006

Do Juries Add Value?: Evidence From An Empirical Study Of Jury Trial Waiver Clauses In Large Corporate Contracts, Theodore Eisenberg, Geoffrey P. Miller

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

We study jury trial waivers in a data set of 2,816 contracts contained as exhibits in Form 8-K filings by reporting corporations during 2002. Because these contracts are associated with events deemed material to the financial condition of SEC-reporting firms, they likely are carefully negotiated by sophisticated, well-informed parties and thus provide presumptive evidence about the value associated with the availability of jury trials. Only a small minority of contracts, about 20 percent, waived jury trials. An additional nine percent of contracts had arbitration clauses that effectively preclude jury trials though the reason for arbitration clauses need not specifically relate …

A Challenge To Traditional Economic Assumptions: Applying The Social Theory Of Communicative Action To Governance In The Third Sector, Murray E. Millar, Anne Abraham Nov 2006

A Challenge To Traditional Economic Assumptions: Applying The Social Theory Of Communicative Action To Governance In The Third Sector, Murray E. Millar, Anne Abraham

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

A major distinguishing feature of third sector organisations (TSOs) compared with business organisations is that their purpose for existence is not to make profit for shareholders, but to promote civil society activities and build social cohesion. This paper asserts that if the purpose and the functional rationality of such organisations are significantly different from business organisations, then it should not be assumed that the approaches to governance in both types of organisations should be the same. Instead, the approaches to governance should be intimately linked to the character of the organisation being governed. Thus, this study is set in a …

Multiwalled Ice Helixes And Ice Nanotubes, Jaeil Bai, Jun Wang, Xiao Cheng Zeng Nov 2006

Multiwalled Ice Helixes And Ice Nanotubes, Jaeil Bai, Jun Wang, Xiao Cheng Zeng

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

We report six phases of high-density nano-ice predicted to form within carbon nanotubes (CNTs) at high pressure. High-density nano-ice self-assembled within smaller-diameter CNT (17,0) exhibits a double-walled helical structure where the outer wall consists of four double- stranded helixes, which resemble a DNA double helix, and the inner wall is a quadruple-stranded helix. Four other double-walled nano-ices, self-assembled respectively in two larger-diameter CNTs (20,0 and 22,0), display tubular structure. Within CNT (24,0), the confined water can freeze spontaneously into a triple-walled helical nanoice where the outer wall is an 18-stranded helix and the middle and inner walls are hextuple-stranded helixes.

Towards The Development Of An Integrative Governance Framework For The Third Sector: A Theoretical Review And Analysis, Murray E. Millar, Anne Abraham Nov 2006

Towards The Development Of An Integrative Governance Framework For The Third Sector: A Theoretical Review And Analysis, Murray E. Millar, Anne Abraham

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

This paper reviews the theoretical approaches taken in the governance literature in order to assess the relevance of their application to the third sector and to develop an integrative governance framework to help guide third sector organisations as they seek to improve their governance practices. Governance has been studied extensively in the corporate sector, and also, to a much lesser degree, in the third sector. However, there is evidence that a large gap still exists between what is prescribed as good governance and what has been empirically demonstrated as good governance. Due to the complexity of governance and the current …

Are Browse-Wrap Agreements All They Are Wrapped Up To Be? , Ian A. Rambarran Nov 2006

Are Browse-Wrap Agreements All They Are Wrapped Up To Be? , Ian A. Rambarran

ExpressO

Electronic agreements continue to fortify their presence in the digital commercial marketplace. Whether used to sell goods or services, or simply to define relationships, standardized electronic agreements have appeared in abundance in business-to-business or business-to-consumer transactions. Standardized electronic agreements, like their physical counterparts, offer the ability to address multiple concerns in a simple, efficient fashion. Although electronic contracts and electronic signatures have been accepted and promoted by federal and state governments, many fundamental aspects of contract law have been left for the courts to wrestle with when disputes arise.

Today, there are essentially two types of standardized electronic agreements—the click-through …

Peter Dowben Publications

A boron carbide diode detector, fabricated from two different polytypes of semiconducting boron carbide, will detect neutrons in reasonable agreement with theory. Small deviations from the model calculations occur due to the detection efficiencies of the 10B capture products Li plus α sum signal differing somewhat from expectation in the thin diodes. The performance of the all boron carbide neutron detector does depart from the behavior of devices where a boron rich neutron capture layer is distinct from the diode charge collection region (i.e. a conversion layer solid state detector), as is expected.
