Change In The Concentration Of Employment In Computer Services: Spatial Estimation At The U.S. Metro County Level, Donald Grimes, Mary Beth Walker, Penelope B. Prime

International Business Faculty Publications

This paper models the concentration of computer services activity across theU.S.with factors that incorporate spatial relationships. Specifically, we enhance the standard home-area study with an analysis that allows conditions in neighboring counties to affect the concentration of employment in the home county. We use county-level data for metropolitan areas between 1990 and 1997. To measure change in employment concentration, we use the change in location quotients for SIC 737, which captures employment concentration changes due to both the number of firms and the scale of their activity relative to the national average. After controlling for local demand for computer services, …

Automated Algorithm For The Identification Of Artifacts In Mottled And Noisy Images, Onome Augustine Ugbeme, Eli S. Saber, Wencheng Wu, Kartheek Chandu

Articles

We describe a method for automatically classifying image-quality defects on printed documents. The proposed approach accepts a scanned image where the defect has been localized a priori and performs several appropriate image processing steps to reveal the region of interest. A mask is then created from the exposed region to identify bright outliers. Morphological reconstruction techniques are then applied to emphasize relevant local attributes. The classification of the defects is accomplished via a customized tree classifier that utilizes size or shape attributes at corresponding nodes to yield appropriate binary decisions. Applications of this process include automated/assisted diagnosis and repair of …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Background and Purpose: The term activities of daily living (ADL) refers to the basic skills that a person needs in order to carry out the fundamental physical functions of self-care and independent living. In this survey paper, we reviewarticle the studies on ADL that involve theories of ADL, the concepts and items of measurement, and the test theory developed for ADL assessment. Unfortunately, the issues mentioned above have not been well integrated systematically. With this reviewarticle, we would like to provide a picture of past and current trends in ADL assessment.Method: We searched literature reviewarticles and rehabilitation or measurement textbooks …

Rehabilitation Of Heat Stroke With Cerebellar Motor Dysfunction: A Casereport, Tsung-Ming Yang, Jo-Tong Chen, Wei-Chih Hung, Nai-Wen Guo, Ta-Shen Kuan

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Heat stroke is a medical condition, which in its severest form, may lead to multiple organ failure and death. A previous study showed that most survivors recover completely without sequelae, but some survivors have long-term neurological dysfunction, especially cerebellar motor dysfunction. The rehabilitative outcome of such patients with neurological dysfunction has rarely been reported. We present herein a case of a 31 year old male who suffered from heat stroke, followed by acute rhabdomyolysis, renal failure, respiratory failure, cardiac arrhythmia, and cerebellar motor dysfunction. He was transferred to our rehabilitation ward 36 days after the heat stroke injury due to ataxia, …

Hiv/Aids Surveillance Systems: A Case Study Of Egypt, Nesmah Elkestawi, David Johnston Dec 2006

Hiv/Aids Surveillance Systems: A Case Study Of Egypt, Nesmah Elkestawi, David Johnston

The Undergraduate Research Journal

Current estimates of HIV/AIDS incidences are thought to be inaccurate according to external organizations such as WHO and UNAIDS. It is important to maintain an accurate estimate of prevalence to avoid an unexpected outbreak of a high-level epidemic. Our method of analyzing Egypt’s surveillance system comes primarily from comparisons to other Eastern Mediterranean countries. Research on these regional HIV/AIDS surveillance systems was conducted by studying publications printed by organizations that deal with these issues. To gain primary perspectives on the systems in Egypt, interviews were conducted with representatives of the organizations World Health Organization (WHO) and Family Health International (FHI) …

G And P Genotyping Of Human Rotavirus Isolated In A University Hospital In Korea: Implications For Nosocomial Infections, Jung Oak Kang, Chang Ryul Kim, Paul E. Kilgore, Tae Yeal Choi Dec 2006

G And P Genotyping Of Human Rotavirus Isolated In A University Hospital In Korea: Implications For Nosocomial Infections, Jung Oak Kang, Chang Ryul Kim, Paul E. Kilgore, Tae Yeal Choi

Department of Pharmacy Practice

To characterize rotavirus G and P genotypes circulating among infants and young children hospitalized with severe diarrhea in a university hospital in Gyeonggi province, Korea, and to examine any association of the genotypes and nosocomial infections, we genotyped 103 isolates of rotavirus by multiplex RT-PCR. In July 2001- June 2002, we found that globally common strains constituted 64.2% (G2P[4] 28.3%, G3P[8] 28.3%, G4P[8] 5.7%, and G1P[8] 1.9%), and the uncommon strain, G4P[6], constituted 26.4%. During July 2002-June 2003, the percentage of common strains decreased to 44.0% (G3P[8] 18.0%, G2P[4] 16.8%, and G1P[8] 10.0%), but G4P[6] increased to 36.0%. G9P[8] was …
