The Boundary Definition Problem: Statistical And Geometric Approaches, Richard Averack Jan 1983

The Boundary Definition Problem: Statistical And Geometric Approaches, Richard Averack

Digitized Theses

The boundary definition problem involves the selection of appropriate criteria and methods for portraying boundaries of geographical distributions. Although this is a very important consideration in many academic fields, particularly geography, biology and sociology, apparently very little attention has been devoted to it in the literature. Boundaries are, as a rule, rather carelessly and subjectively drawn.;Various approaches to bounding discrete point distributions are explored in this thesis. These approaches fall into two categories based on the amount of information available about the distribution. In some caes, only locations are known and a boundary must be defined based soley on the …

Keats And The "Service Of The Time Being", Joanne Lorna Buckley Jan 1983

Keats And The "Service Of The Time Being", Joanne Lorna Buckley

Digitized Theses

This dissertation is an exploration of Keats's poems and letters with an eye to discovering his attitude toward the viability of poetry in a post-Lockean universe. Keats's concern with the subjective limitations of imagination in the face of scientific advancement in his time and its effects on his poetry are thus its subject.;The Echo and Narcissus myth, as it relates to the reflexive imagery in Keats's work, is used as a paradigm of the Lockean split between reflection and sensation and its relation to the poetic process. Certain motifs related to Keats's reflexive imagery are then examined, including the motifs …

Social Vision And Individual Learning In Arnold Bennett's Five Towns Fiction, Douglas William Malcolm Jan 1983

Social Vision And Individual Learning In Arnold Bennett's Five Towns Fiction, Douglas William Malcolm

Digitized Theses

Arnold Bennett's reputation has been hampered by the disfavour that he incurred among the leading modernists and the critical tendency to treat realism as an attempt to achieve social mimesis. If realism is regarded as a mode of fiction, Bennett's Five Towns books can be seen as an endeavour to formulate a coherent social vision rather than as a reproduction of the Staffordshire Potteries. In Anna of the Five Towns, The Old Wives' Tale and Clayhanger, the best of the Five Towns works, the characters' environment displays an increasing propensity to divide into personal and social worlds, both of which …

Client Strategies In The Management Of The Audit Process, Jean Nollet Jan 1983

Client Strategies In The Management Of The Audit Process, Jean Nollet

Digitized Theses

An audit is the process used by independent professional accountants to gather evidence to express an opinion on the financial statements of an entity, usually a company. Even though audits are customarily done for shareholders, they are often conducted for third parties such as lenders and potential investors. Companies that require audited financial statements need annually to purchase audit services.;A substantial amount of research has focused on the way auditors perform their tasks but this thesis focuses on the way clients manage the audit process. The audit process consists of work which is done by the auditors, the client and …

The Logic Of Fundamental Processes: Nonmeasurable Sets And Quantum Mechanics, Itamar Pitowsky Jan 1983

The Logic Of Fundamental Processes: Nonmeasurable Sets And Quantum Mechanics, Itamar Pitowsky

Digitized Theses

Quantum theory has played a significant role in modern philosophy both as a source of metaphysical ideas and as an important example of a 'scientific revolution'. In spite of the sixty or so years that have elapsed since its invention, a long lasting controversy concerning the interpretation and meaning of quantum theory prevails. Almost all authors, however, seem to agree on one major point, namely, that there could be no interpretation of this theory which is both realistic and local.;The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate that this premiss is false and that a realistic, local and deterministic interpretation …

Fenestrations In The Internal Elastic Lamina Of Human Cerebral Arteries And Their Probable Role As A Factor In The Etiology Of Saccular Aneurysms, Gordon John Campbell Jan 1983

Fenestrations In The Internal Elastic Lamina Of Human Cerebral Arteries And Their Probable Role As A Factor In The Etiology Of Saccular Aneurysms, Gordon John Campbell

Digitized Theses

The main purpose of this investigation was to characterize the spatial geometry of the fenestrations (windows) in the internal elastic lamina (IEL) from human cerebral arteries. The IEL was isolated from the arterial wall and prepared for examination by the scanning electron microscope. A new method identified a uniform shrinkage for the IEL of only 6.9 (+OR-) 0.21 SEM %. The photomicrographs of the external surface of the IEL revealed a continuous sheet penetrated by numerous round fenestrations with smooth borders. Four geometrical characteristics based upon the diameter and the number of fenestrations in the field of view for every …

Across-Wind Response Of Slender Structures Of Circular Cross-Section To Atmospheric Turbulence, Roger Indranath Basu Jan 1983

Across-Wind Response Of Slender Structures Of Circular Cross-Section To Atmospheric Turbulence, Roger Indranath Basu

Digitized Theses

A mathematical model which yields estimates of across-wind response is presented. Fluctuating forces from three sources are identified and modeled. They are forces due to vortex shedding, forces induced by the lateral component of turbulence and forces induced by motion. The motion dependent force, which in reality is a complex flow-structure interaction phenomenon, is incorporated in the model through a simple device. The model is semi-empirical in construction, and relies on the results from laboratory-scale experiments for the empirical component.;The reliability of the predictions depends not only on the fidelity of the mathematical model but also on the quality of …

Mechanisms Of Reactions Of Alkenesulfonyl And 2-Substituted Ethanesulfonyl Chlorides, John Henry Hillhouse Jan 1983

Mechanisms Of Reactions Of Alkenesulfonyl And 2-Substituted Ethanesulfonyl Chlorides, John Henry Hillhouse

Digitized Theses

This thesis describes the mechanisms of the reactions of some simple alkenesulfonyl chlorides and 2-substituted ethanesulfonyl chlorides with tertiary amine bases in aqueous and organic media.;Chapter 1 describes the reactions of ethenesulfonyl chloride and trans-1-propene-1-sulfonyl chloride with water in the presence and absence of substituted pyridines. The former reactions are concluded to proceed by S(,N)2' attack of the pyridine based on the sulfonyl chloride to generate ultimately a pyridine betaine and the pyridinium alkenesulfonate. The formation of the alkenesulfonate anion from the alkenesulfonyl chloride by reaction of the pyridine base corresponds to the first well-established example of a vinylogous nucleophilic …

Adsorption Of Cations At The Sulphide/Water Interface, Gilles Elziar Jean Jan 1983

Adsorption Of Cations At The Sulphide/Water Interface, Gilles Elziar Jean

Digitized Theses

The adsorption of aqueous metal ions on various sulphide minerals was studied as a function of time, pH, surface composition and chemical speciation.;In the first part of this work (Chap. 3) the reaction between various types of gold solutions and several minerals was followed using XPS and SEM. Gold from chloro auric solutions was reduced quickly from Au(III) to Au(O) by every sulphide mineral studied. SEM showed the gold to be unevenly distributed on the surface in the form of agglomerates. Oxide minerals did not reduce gold to any great extent. The gold was shown to adsorb on the sulphide …

The Effectiveness Of Metamemory Instruction In Promoting Generalisation Of The Keyword Mnemonic Strategy: A Developmental Study, Julia Therese O'Sullivan Jan 1983

The Effectiveness Of Metamemory Instruction In Promoting Generalisation Of The Keyword Mnemonic Strategy: A Developmental Study, Julia Therese O'Sullivan

Digitized Theses

The effectiveness of an instructional programme, consisting of strategy training supplemented by metamemory instruction in promoting generalisation of the keywod mnemonic strategy, was assessed. Three experiments were conducted to investigate three specific issues. In Experiment 1, the effectiveness of the metamemory instructional programme in promoting generalisation was compared to that of other instructional routines. Eleven-year-old students learned a list of cities paired with their products. Children in the four experimental conditions were instructed in the use of the keyword strategy to learn city-product pairs. In addition, children in three of the experimental conditions received one of the following types of …

Spatial Processes In The Analysis Of Vegetation, Janos Podani Jan 1983

Spatial Processes In The Analysis Of Vegetation, Janos Podani

Digitized Theses

Vegetation Science often relies on methods whose principal strategy involves the change of some parameters of sampling. There is, in fact, a time-static spatial dynamism in the analysis of vegetation, and most changes can be ordered into a sequence, whereby spatial processes are defined. The objective of the present thesis is to create a theoretical framework for the discussion and review of time-static spatial processes, to give a methodological basis for their analysis, and to illustrate some possibilities through real and simulated examples.;Two basic types of processes are distinguished: (1) the primary processes defined by the investigator, and (2) the …

The Effects Of Exercise On Capillary Supply To The 'Transition Zone' Of Infarcted Rat Hearts, Karin Przyklenk Jan 1983

The Effects Of Exercise On Capillary Supply To The 'Transition Zone' Of Infarcted Rat Hearts, Karin Przyklenk

Digitized Theses

Within nine hours following coronary artery occlusion, muscle fibers adjacent to the developing necrosis (those in the border or 'transition' zone) are thought to be viable but potentially ischemic. The long-term (> 24 hour) fate of these fibers is not known. My objective was to determine whether a transition zone is present in an animal model of chronic myocardial infarction. As ischemia implies reduced oxygenation, possible due to reduced capillary supply, I quantified the capillary supply to the region adjacent to the necrosis in infarcted hearts, and compared this to values in healthy myocardium.;Myocardial infarcts were produced in rats by …

Cerebrovascular Responses To Hypotension And Hypercapnia In The Rabbit: Effect Of Alpha-Receptor Blockade And Carotid Artery Occlusion, Ursula Irene Tuor Jan 1983

Cerebrovascular Responses To Hypotension And Hypercapnia In The Rabbit: Effect Of Alpha-Receptor Blockade And Carotid Artery Occlusion, Ursula Irene Tuor

Digitized Theses

In this study, the responsiveness of the cerebrovasculature to hypercapnia provided an indication of the residual capacity for dilation available (ie. the dilative reserve). The relationship between cerebral blood flow (CBF) and pial vessel caliber responses and the dependence of these responses on the dilative reserve were examined in three groups of rabbits: 31 control animals; 21 phenoxybenzamine treated animals (alpha adrenoreceptor blockade); and 21 animals subjected to carotid artery occulusion. The effects of hemorrhagic hypotension on both CBF (H(,2) clearance) and pial vessel caliber (image splitting technique) and on the cerebrovascular responsiveness to hypercapnia (the CO(,2) response) were investigated …

Some Problems In Intermolecular Forces And Statistical Mechanics, Kyoko Watanabe Jan 1983

Some Problems In Intermolecular Forces And Statistical Mechanics, Kyoko Watanabe

Digitized Theses

The initial part of this work is concerned with the construction and validity of model potential energies while the second part involves the use of statistical mechanical perturbation theory to evaluate some of the bulk properties of liquids for various types of potential models.;A previously developed potential model for isotropic intermolecular interactions is used for the construction of reliable potentials for interactions of unlike noble gas atoms. The potential model has essentially only one adjustable parameter which controls the balance between its exchange and Coulomb energy components. The parameters in the model potentials are determined by fitting second virial coefficient …

Two Component Grinding And Liberation Model And Experimental Studies Of Cryogenic Tar Sand Separation, Adrianus Welmers Jan 1983

Two Component Grinding And Liberation Model And Experimental Studies Of Cryogenic Tar Sand Separation, Adrianus Welmers

Digitized Theses

Cyrogenic Tar Sand Separation is a novel technique to access the vast energy potential of the Alberta Tar Sands. In this process tar sand is ground at about -50(DEGREES)C. At this temperature the tar is more brittle and weaker than the sand. Thus, the tar is liberated from the sand and ground to fine particles, which can be separated from the sand. The technical performance of this process was studied, and a general grinding and liberation model was developed, which simulates this and other two component grinding processes.;Four grinding/separation techniques were studied: Fluidized Bed Grinder (a stirred fluidized bed with …

Electrophysiological Investigation Of Amygdaloid Inputs To The Ventral Pallidum Via The Nucleus Accumbens And Their Modulation By Dopamine, Conrad Chi Yim Jan 1983

Electrophysiological Investigation Of Amygdaloid Inputs To The Ventral Pallidum Via The Nucleus Accumbens And Their Modulation By Dopamine, Conrad Chi Yim

Digitized Theses

The nucleus accumbens (NA) receives inputs from limbic structures and projects to the basal ganglia. In addition, it is the target of a heavy dopaminergic projection from the ventral tegmental area (VTA). The purpose of the present study is to investigate using electrophysiological techniques whether or not the NA forms a functional link between the amygdala (AMY) and the ventral pallidum (VP), and whether or not the mesolimbic dopamine projection from the VTA interacts with this pathway.;Electrical stimulation of the basolateral nucleus of the AMY caused an excitation was attenuated by ionotophoretically applied dopamine (DA) or electrical stimulation of the …

Alan Plaunt And Canadian Broadcasting, Michael Joseph Nolan Jan 1983

Alan Plaunt And Canadian Broadcasting, Michael Joseph Nolan

Digitized Theses

Alan Plaunt was born in Ottawa, in 1904, shortly after Marconi's successful experiments resulted in the development of "wireless" communication. The first Canadian radio station began operation in 1918 and, for the next fourteen years, broadcaster-businessmen dominated this new industry. These radio pioneers were eventually forced to accept a higher level of government involvement in broadcasting. Plaunt's unrelenting efforts to fashion a new form of broadcasting, which would transcend the exploitation of radio solely for private gain, helped to establish the Canadian Radio Broadcasting Commission (CRBC) in 1932 and its successor, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), in 1936. The CBC …

An Interferometric Study Of Coupled Convective Heat Transfer In A Horizontal Flat Plate Enclosure, Noori Nick Saidi Jan 1983

An Interferometric Study Of Coupled Convective Heat Transfer In A Horizontal Flat Plate Enclosure, Noori Nick Saidi

Digitized Theses

A long path Mach-Zehnder interferometer was combined with a low speed wind tunnel in order to study the coupling effect between natural heat convection inside the enclosure of a simulated solar collector and external natural and forced convection. This technique permitted qualitative as well as quantitative temperature field visualization of the fluid layers within the enclosure between the hot bottom plate and cold top plate boundaries of the collector, and the coupling effect of natural and forced convection on the cold plate.;The horizontal rectangular enclosure of the simulated solar collector was heated isothermally at the bottom surface and cooled at …

An Analysis Of The Dna Repair-Recombination Functions And The Uvsx-Uvsy Dna Repair Pathway Of Bacteriophage T4, Leonard Paul Wakem Jan 1983

An Analysis Of The Dna Repair-Recombination Functions And The Uvsx-Uvsy Dna Repair Pathway Of Bacteriophage T4, Leonard Paul Wakem

Digitized Theses

Due to the complexity of the T4 uvsX-uvsY DNA repair pathway, we have attempted to define the functions and repair mechanisms involved in the pathway, using several different techniques. The DNA repair-recombination functions of the pathway were analyzed biochemically and genetically to aid in understanding the role of these functions in the cell.;To study the functions of the uvsX and uvsY gene products, DNA intermediates formed after uv-irradiation were extracted from uvsX and uvsY mutant-infected cells and analyzed by sucrose gradient centrifugation. Results of this analysis suggested that the uvsX and uvsY gene products function in a DNA "joining" reaction.;The …

User Developed Computer-Based Applications: A Model Of The Factors Of Success, Suzanne Rivard Jan 1983

User Developed Computer-Based Applications: A Model Of The Factors Of Success, Suzanne Rivard

Digitized Theses

The development of computer-based applications by Data Processing (DP) end users is a relatively new phenomenon, which is said to have the potential of solving some of the problems inherent in application development by DP professionals. User developed computer-based applications (UDA) is said to relieve DP application development and maintenance workload, and to eliminate communication problems which often lead to difficulties in the development process.;While UDA is spreading rapidly little research has been done on it and organizations considering its introduction face the issue of what to do so as to make it a successful endeavor. The purpose of this …

Crystal Chemistry Of Chromium - Aluminium Spinels, Margery Diane Osborne Jan 1983

Crystal Chemistry Of Chromium - Aluminium Spinels, Margery Diane Osborne

Digitized Theses

Mossbauer spectra for a variety of spinel phases, both natural and synthetic and representing a very wide range in composition, indicate an essentially ordered arrangement of iron atoms in the crystal structures of natural chromite and Cr-bearing spinels. All the Mossbauer spectra of natural samples have been rationalized by fitting just two doublets, assigned to Fe('2+) in the tetrahedral (T) cation site and Fe('3+) in the octahedral (M) site, using initial Mossbauer parameters for synthetic end-member compositions. Calculated Fe('3+) to Fe('2+) ratios agree well with wet chemical data.;Mossbauer site occupancies were used to constrain the crystal structure refinements of selected …

The Overjustification Effect: An Affective Interpretation, Helena Grace Pretty Jan 1983

The Overjustification Effect: An Affective Interpretation, Helena Grace Pretty

Digitized Theses

The purpose of the present research is to investigate the overjustification phenomenon whereby a person who performs an intrinsically interesting activity for an expected, external reward sometimes decreases his or her subsequent interest and engagement in that activity. The determinants of this effect have important implications for the type of contingency payment and reward systems used in organizational psychology and education where sustaining intrinsic motivation is a central concern.;Currently two main explanations of the overjustification process have been given: the self-perception overjustification hypothesis, and cognitive evaluation theory. Research that has been done to assess the validity of these explanations is …

A Study Of The Impact Of The Family Volunteer As A Social Support Intervention With Mothers Of Newborns, Elizabeth Michelle Sullivan

Digitized Theses

The Family Volunteer Project was designed to address two general issues with regard to the area of maladaptive parenting. These were: (1) to contribute to the development of more effective screening procedures for identifying families at high risk for maladaptive parenting; and (2) to assess the feasibility and effectiveness of family volunteers as a promising preventive intervention strategy with respect to parenting problems.;This dissertation focuses upon the second of these objectives. The analyses reported concern the feasibility and effectiveness of volunteer intervention to effect positive change either directly or indirectly upon the psychological well-being, perceived social support and parenting attitudes …

Unification And Confirmability: The Search For An Understanding Of The Goals Of Science, Si-Wai Man Jan 1983

Unification And Confirmability: The Search For An Understanding Of The Goals Of Science, Si-Wai Man

Digitized Theses

The major concern of this thesis is to provide a plausible argument for the existence of another goal of science--so that van Fraassen's claim that empirical adequacy is the sole aim of science can be countered.;I propose that we should look carefully into why theories are constructed in order to find some clue to the problem of how another goal of science can be established. More specifically, we should examine closely what unification in theories is, in order to see the limitation of treating science as an activity aiming only at empirical adequacy. It is suggested in this thesis that …

Digitized Theses

A Dynamic Assimilation Model: Selected First-Generation Arab-Canadians, Mohammed Saleh Jan 1983

A Dynamic Assimilation Model: Selected First-Generation Arab-Canadians, Mohammed Saleh

Digitized Theses

The dissertation examines the process of Arab assimilation in Canada. Data was gathered by bilingual (Arabic/English) questionnaires. The author used a multidisciplinary approach to present assimilation as a process of psychosocial spatial transformation.;The contribution of the dissertation is a molecular assimilation model which integrates three parts: spatial interaction, assimilation and identity change. The model parts are totally interrelated allowing for dynamic feedbacks, multicyclic operation and continuous transformation. The application of the model led to a greater appreciation of the molecular and dynamic nature of assimilation.;Assimilation molecularity is recognized by discovering the assimilation molecules: intercultural events. They are the interacting subsystems …
