Two different greenhouse experiments were conducted to determine the effects of sources and levels of Ca on the growth, yield and mineral contents of bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) cv. 'Keystone Resistant Giant #4' grown on Cahaba silt loam. The CaCO(,3) produced plants that had significantly better growth, greater yield and higher nutrient uptake than did the control plants during the spring, summer and fall tests. Quality of growth, earliness of flowering and fruit development were better during the fall plantings for all treatments. Two acidic silt loam soils, Beauregard and Gigger were used in a study involving Ca movement and Al displacement from 15.2 cm laboratory soil clumns. Each column was uniformly packed to the appropriate bulk density. The top 5.1 cm portion of each column contained soil pre-mixed with powdered gypsum at rates of 0, 1 and 2 equivalents of the exchangeable Al. Calcium movement and Al displacement in the soil columns were accomplished by applying distilled-deionized water at a constant flow rate and the effluent was analyzed. Short term burial of freshly harvested seed and soil disturbances in agricultural populations of wild poinsettia (Euphorbia heterophylla L.) indicated a very low carry over of seeds into the second season after dissemination. After seeds were buried at 10, 50, 100, and 200 mm in the fall; 4%, 81%, 30% and 1%, respectively, produced seedlings during the following growing season, and only 3%, 1%, < 1%, and 3% of the seeds, respectively, were viable after one year. Soil disturbances (tillage) did not affect seedling recruitment or longevity of wild poinsettia seed. Early planting dates (May 1) of soybeans required 6 weeks of weed-free maintenance to prevent serious reinfestation and subsequent yield reductions in fields with a high agronomic seed bank of wild poinsettia, whereas for late planting dates (June 10) 3 weeks of weed-free maintenance was required. No significant difference in yield was detected between one or two cultivations for either planting date.

The purpose of the study was to explore, through in-depth unstructured interviews, the factors preventing experimentation with cigarettes and the factors related to cigarette smoking. Hypotheses generation, as opposed to hypothesis testing, was the goal. Forty-seven men and women between the ages of 18 and 48 with diverse smoking (or nonsmoking) histories and current smoking patterns and attitudes were interviewed.

The results are organized around the four stages in a smoker's career. Numerous quotes from the interviews and five illustrative cases are presented to exemplify the patterns that emerged.

Test diets containing ground beef extended with 0, 10, 20 and 30% ISP were fed to Single Comb White Leghorn chicks and 28 days to determine the effect of isolated soy protein (ISP) on the availability of copper naturally present in meat. Copper content of the test diets decreased with increasing levels of ISP, ranging from 6.89 (+OR-) 0.17 ppm to 2.09 (+OR-) 0.12 ppm. Mean feed consumption per diet also decreased with increasing ISP levels as did the amount of copper consumed per bird. Nitrification at the rice root was investigated. Nitrifiers were found in the rice rhizoplane, rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere soils under flooded conditions. They were greater in the rhizoplane than in the rhizosphere soil and greatest at the heading stage of rice growth. Ammonium-sulfate or NaNO(,2) injected into the flooded soils with growing rice plants did not increase the activities of nitrifiers in the rice rhizoplane. Incubation of the flooded soil with (NH(,4))(,2)SO(,4) or NaNO(,2) did not increase the activities of NH(,4)('+)- or NO(,2)('-)-oxidizers in soils without rice. In-vivo and in-vitro studies were conducted to measure bioavailability of iron from beef and beef-soy mixtures. The effects of cooking temperature and method of cooking were investigated. Animals absorbed non-heme iron better than heme forms and utilized iron contained in beef-soy diets as efficiently as that contained in beef diets. Colorimetric iron values of 17.18, 6.0, and 9.02% were obtained in raw, broiled and microwaved beef samples, respectively. A similar trend was observed in beef-soy mixtures when analyzed raw (11.03), broiled (6.32) or microwaved (2.21). DNA complementary (cDNA) to the RNA genome of sugarcane mosaic virus strain H (SCMV-H) was synthesized using avian myeloblastosis virus reverse transcriptase and oligo(dT) as primer. Second strand synthesis used the same enzyme and oligo(dG) primer after tailing the first strand with oligo(dC). Double-stranded cDNA was inserted into the PstI site of plasmid pBR322 by the G-C tailing method and cloned in Esherichia coli HB101. Twenty recombinant clones containing SCMV-H sequences were obtained, but most had inserts less than 500 base pairs (0.5 kbp). Two plasmids, S47-6 and S47-20, however, had larger inserts of 1.2 kbp and 2.7 kbp, respectively …

Fetal, neonatal and adult sheep were infected intramuscularly with B. abortus Strain 2308. Morphologic lesions were present in the regional lymph nodes of B. abortus infected neonatal and adult sheep and in the regional lymph nodes, lungs and the parietal surfaces of thoracic and abdominal organs of B. abortus infected fetuses. The regional lymph nodes of neonatal and adult sheep were moderately to markedly enlarged and contained prominent lymphoid follicles and few to numerous plasma cells. Fetal lesions were characterized by: lymph nodes with sinuses that contained numerous foamy macrophages, pneumonia and fibrin covered thoracic and abdominal organs. Fetuses responded …
