Studies On The Selective Oxidation Activity Of Iron-Tellurium-Oxide Catalysts., Yan-Nian Shyr
Studies On The Selective Oxidation Activity Of Iron-Tellurium-Oxide Catalysts., Yan-Nian Shyr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The selective oxidation of 1-butene to 1,3-butadiene and propylene to acrolein are important industrial processes. One of the critical factors which determines the feasibility of these processes is selectivity. Since iron oxide has shown potential as a component of a selective mixed oxide catalyst, and tellurium has been used as a promoter for selective oxidation catalysts, this study focusing on the development and investigation of an iron-tellurium mixed oxide catalyst for the selective oxidation of propylene and 1-butene has been undertaken. The study includes kinetic and mechanistic investigations, and simultaneous activity/selectivity and spectroscopic measurements for iron-tellurium catalysts have been developed. …
A Study Of The Microorganisms Inhabiting Rotating Biological Contactor Biofilms During Various Operating Conditions, Nancy Edna Kinner
A Study Of The Microorganisms Inhabiting Rotating Biological Contactor Biofilms During Various Operating Conditions, Nancy Edna Kinner
Doctoral Dissertations
The microbial ecology of rotating biological contactors (RBC) is a combination of complex interrelationships among bacteria, protozoa, and metazoa and their perceived environment. Since very little information is available on the microorganisms inhabiting the biofilms, the major objective of this research was to increase the understanding of the biological interactions occurring in RBC biofilms as a function of organic loading. Biofilms, in pilot-scale RBCs receiving 2.0, 4.0, and 6.0 g TOC/m('2)(.)d of settled domestic sewage, were examined using light and electron microscopy. The microbial community, composed of filamentous and unicellular bacteria, zooflagellates, amoebae, ciliates, nematodes, and rotifers is complex and …
Effects Of Rotary Inertia And Shear Deformation On Extensional Vibrations Of Continuous Circular Curved Beams, Mohamed El-Said Said Issa
Effects Of Rotary Inertia And Shear Deformation On Extensional Vibrations Of Continuous Circular Curved Beams, Mohamed El-Said Said Issa
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation is devoted to the dynamic analysis of continuous circular curved beams. The dynamic stiffness matrix is derived for the determination of natural frequencies of continuous curved beams undergoing in-plane vibrations. The formulation of stiffness matrix may be widely applied to problems with various consideration of Bernoulli-Euler Theory, Rayleigh Theory and Timoshenko Theory. Using this formulation for dynamic loading, the fixed-end moment, shear and thrusts for concentrated and distributed loads have been derived. Two continuous circular curved beams subjected to free and forced vibrations are given to illustrate the application of the proposed method and to show the effects …
Truss Analysis Using Singular Imbedding Method, Thiem Jenngamkul
Truss Analysis Using Singular Imbedding Method, Thiem Jenngamkul
Doctoral Dissertations
In structural analysis and design of trussed structures, the Singular Imbedding Method is applied and formulated to handle joint displacement, member force, and member stress constraints. There are two structural systems, namely, a Displacement Constraining System (DC) and a Force Constraining System (FC) that are developed for constraining joint displacements and member forces, respectively. The formulation of this method is based upon three sets of equations; equilibrium conditions, compatibility relationships, and Hooke's law of material.
The final structural stiffness matrix equations are constructed for the different types of constraints. The unknown member areas are determined from the final structural stiffness …

Simulation Of Settling Tanks By The Strip Integral Method., Sameh Mohamed Ali. Abdel-Gawad
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A numerical model of primary clarifiers performance, emphasizing the prediction of both the velocity field and the distribution of particulate concentration is presented in this dissertation. The model is restricted to those mean steady flows which are isothermal, neutral density, operating at low concentration and nearly two-dimensional. The simulation is for either rectangular or circular basins. The simulation requires a hydrodynamic submodel and a transport submodel. The hydrodynamic submodel employs the Strip Integral Method (SIM) to solve the governing differential equations of motion and continuity. This method is an improvement over the plug flow models in that it can reproduce …

Surface Flashover Studies And Electric Field Computations To Optimize The Design Of Conductor-Solid Insulator Geometry In Vacuum., Arunachalam Sivathanu. Pillai
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The surface flashover strength of cylindrical and conical solid insulators has been investigated in ultra-high vacuum (< 10('-8) Torr) using DC, AC (60 Hz) and lightning impulse and a combination of a DC and impulse and a DC and AC. In general the DC and the impulse flashover voltages for a fixed length of the insulator are almost the same (within (+OR-)5%) and the AC flashover voltage is lower than the DC and the impulse. The combined DC (+OR-) 1.2/50 (mu)s impulse flashover voltage of cylindrical and conical solid insulators in vacuum is influenced by the applied DC pre-stress. A DC pre-stress causes an increase in the subsequent flashover values of the AC superimposed on DC. In general the flashover voltage of solid insulators are independent of the pressure in the range 10('-8) to 6 x 10('-3) Torr. The effects of ultra-violet (UV) light on the electrical performance of solid insulator in vacuum has been studied. The UV irradiation on solid insulator-vacuum interface degrades the electrical performance of the insulator. A method for calculating the DC surface flashover voltage of cylindrical insulators based on the assumption that the discharge occurs in a layer of desorbed gases from the insulator surface has been proposed. The effect of surface charge accumulation on the field distribution has been studied by assuming different patterns of surface charge distributions. The results showed that for a heterocharge accumulation the electric field is enhanced at both the cathode and the anode electrode junctions and for a homocharge accumulation the field enhancement is on the surface of the insulator away from the electrode junctions. In the case of a positive charge accumulation throughout the surface of the solid insulator, an enhancement in the field is found at the cathode and a reduction in the field value at the anode. The electric field distribution along the solid insulator-vacuum interface is computed and analyzed for a cylindrical insulator with metal inserts, cylindrical insulator placed in recessed electrodes, cylindrical insulator with convex curved edges, cylindrical insulator with concave curved edges and cylindrical insulator with metal inserts and placed in recessed electrodes. The electrode-insulator geometry which gives the best performance has been suggested.Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Iterative Nonlinear Modeling Of Exhaust Pressure Pulses From A Small Rotary Engine., Robert G. S. Gaspar
Iterative Nonlinear Modeling Of Exhaust Pressure Pulses From A Small Rotary Engine., Robert G. S. Gaspar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An experimental study was undertaken to investigate some of the factors affecting the behaviour of pressure variations in a straight exhaust pipe attached to a rotary engine. The investigation involved the measurement of engine load, speed, fuel consumption, combustion air properties and flow rate, mean static pressure near the exhaust port, mean temperatures at two locations in the exhaust pipe and transient gas pressures at two locations in the exhaust pipe. A theoretical, nonlinear model of the particle velocity of a gas excited by an acoustic wave propagation was modified to model the transient pressure behaviour of an acoustic wave. …

Torsional Oscillations In A Geared System With Clearances., Subhash Chandra. Jasuja
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The torsional vibration characteristics of a geared system with clearance are investigated in this study. The clearance results in a bilinear restoring force characteristic which is non-linear in nature. This particular type of non-linearity causes the generation of ultraharmonic, harmonic and subharmonic resonances. Analytical solutions are derived for ultraharmonic, harmonic and subharmonic resonances by the application of the Ritz averaging method with two or three term approximations for forcing functions of the type T cos (omega)t and C (omega)('2) cos (omega)t. T and C are constants and (omega) is the forcing frequency. The accuracy of this approximate method is verified …

Application Of Counter-Current Fluidized Cascade In Flotsam-Rich Mixtures, Edward Wing-Kee Chan
Application Of Counter-Current Fluidized Cascade In Flotsam-Rich Mixtures, Edward Wing-Kee Chan
Digitized Theses
The counter-current gas fluidized cascade is a novel pneumatic device for the separation of mixed granular solids according to density and size difference. The study presented here is restricted to the application of the cascade in flotsam-rich binary solids systems.;The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the density difference and size distributions of the two solids, the height and speed of the paddles, the fluidization velocity and feed and product withdrawal rates on the separation performance of the cascade. It was observed that while a significant density difference would usually result in strong segregation in the …
The Aerodynamic Loads On A Flat Plate Between Parallel Walls Due To Rotational Flow Disturbances, Hani Abdel-Razik Alnakeeb
The Aerodynamic Loads On A Flat Plate Between Parallel Walls Due To Rotational Flow Disturbances, Hani Abdel-Razik Alnakeeb
Digitized Theses
In the thesis the effects of rotational flow disturbances on a body placed in an inviscid, incompressible fluid stream and in particular the case of a flat plate situated midway between two parallel planes were studied. A single vortex approaching the flat plate was first considered and then expanded to simulate the effects of pseudo-turbulence on the flat plate.;The finite-element and finite-difference numerical methods were evaluated in the thesis and arguments were made in support of using the finite-difference approach rather than the finite-element approach. The fact that the finite-difference technique was used for the particular flow problems studied in …

Across-Wind Response Of Slender Structures Of Circular Cross-Section To Atmospheric Turbulence, Roger Indranath Basu
Across-Wind Response Of Slender Structures Of Circular Cross-Section To Atmospheric Turbulence, Roger Indranath Basu
Digitized Theses
A mathematical model which yields estimates of across-wind response is presented. Fluctuating forces from three sources are identified and modeled. They are forces due to vortex shedding, forces induced by the lateral component of turbulence and forces induced by motion. The motion dependent force, which in reality is a complex flow-structure interaction phenomenon, is incorporated in the model through a simple device. The model is semi-empirical in construction, and relies on the results from laboratory-scale experiments for the empirical component.;The reliability of the predictions depends not only on the fidelity of the mathematical model but also on the quality of …
