Effect Of Maternal Age On Offspring Social Behaviour In Drosophila Melanogaster, Shirley Long
Effect Of Maternal Age On Offspring Social Behaviour In Drosophila Melanogaster, Shirley Long
2016 Undergraduate Awards
Aging can be defined as the natural and progressive decline in physiological functioning leading to increased risk for disease and death. Although the effects of age are well characterised, much less work has been done to study whether these detrimental changes can be transmitted to offspring. Advanced parental age has been correlated with higher incidence of neuropsychiatric disorders such as autism in children. As average maternal age increases in North America, it is becoming increasingly relevant to study the effects of maternal and paternal age on offspring social behaviour. We hypothesize that advanced maternal age in Drosophila melanogaster will affect …
Towards Romantic Syncretism: Liminal And Transitory Women In The Work Of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Michelle Bunton
Towards Romantic Syncretism: Liminal And Transitory Women In The Work Of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Michelle Bunton
2016 Undergraduate Awards
Throughout his career, Dante Gabriel Rossetti struggled with a poetic and visual synthesis of the ideal with the sensual, exploring and attempting to resolve the complex paradox of Victorian sexuality, a feat not easily achieved during an era of such fervent morality. Developing his own Romantic Syncretism, Rossetti presents a synthesis of multifaceted symbolism and allegory in his work, combining pagan and Christian themes to create a liminal space in which the divided natures of his female subjects, their object versus subject-hood, are unified. His approach to Christian symbology, via a fleshy and aesthetic representation of the female form, retains …

Values, Ethics And Participatory Policymaking In Online Communities, Alissa Centivany
FIMS Publications
Drawing upon principles and lessons of technology law and policy, value-centered design, anticipatory design ethics, and information policy literatures this research seeks to contribute to understandings of the ways in which platform design, practice, and policymaking intersect on the social media site Reddit. This research explores how Reddit’s users, moderators, and administrators surface values (like free speech, privacy, dignity, and autonomy), hint at ethical principles (what content, speech, behavior ought to be restricted and under what conditions), through a continuous process of (re)negotiating expectations and norms around values, ethics, and power on the site. Central to this research are questions …
Musical Artists Capitalizing On Hybrid Identities: A Case Study Of Drake The “Authentic” “Black” “Canadian” “Rapper”, Amara Pope
FIMS Publications
This study is an exploration of identity politics through an examination of the ways in which musical artists use the medium of music videos to create marketable, hybrid identities. With the rise of social media and the online consumption of information, music videos play a central role in global, cultural flows. I argue that hybrid identities are constructed by musical artists to gain popularity through the form of ethno-marketing. I include literature surrounding diaspora and hybridity to understand how hybrid identities become a production of heritage and human capital. By utilizing music videos specifically to construct their hybrid identities, musical …

“Activated, But Stuck”: Applying A Critical Occupational Lens To Examine The Negotiation Of Long-Term Unemployment In Contemporary Socio-Political Contexts, Debbie Rudman, Rebecca Aldrich
Occupational Therapy Publications
Solutions for the problem of long-term unemployment are increasingly shaped by neoliberally-informed logics of activation and austerity. Because the implications of these governing frameworks for everyday life are not well understood, this pilot study applied a critical occupational science perspective to understand how long-term unemployment is negotiated within contemporary North American socio-political contexts. This perspective highlights the implications of policy and employment service re-configurations for the range of activities that constitute everyday life. Methods: Using a collaborative ethnographic community-engaged research approach, we recruited eight people in Canada and the United States who self-identified as experiencing long-term unemployment. We analyzed interviews …

Finite Element Modeling Of The Composite Action Between Hollowcore Slabs And The Topping Concrete, Aiham Adawi, Maged Youssef, Mohamed E. Meshaly
Finite Element Modeling Of The Composite Action Between Hollowcore Slabs And The Topping Concrete, Aiham Adawi, Maged Youssef, Mohamed E. Meshaly
Civil and Environmental Engineering Publications
The ultimate strength of hollowcore slabs is greatly affected by their post-cracking behaviour. The composite action between the concrete topping and the hollowcore slab adds another level of nonlinearity. This paper presents a comprehensive finite element study to evaluate the nonlinear properties of the interface between a hollowcore slab and its concrete topping. The presented finite element modeling procedure was validated using data from a previous comprehensive experimental study by the authors. The nonlinear material behaviour of the concrete and the prestressing strands were also accounted for. The paper presents a modeling method that realistically simulates the staged construction technique …

Exact Expressions For The Kohn–Sham Exchange-Correlation Potential In Terms Of Wave-Function-Based Quantities, Rogelio Cuevas-Saavedra, Viktor N. Staroverov
Chemistry Publications
Several workers have deduced various exact expressions for the Kohn–Sham exchange-correlation potential in terms of quantities computable from the interacting and noninteracting wave functions of the system. We show that all these expressions can be obtained by one general method in which the interacting N-electron wave function is expanded in products of one- and (N − 1)-electron functions. Different expressions correspond to different choices of the latter functions. Our analysis unifies and clarifies the previously proposed exact treatments of the exchange-correlation potential, and suggests new ways of expressing this quantity.

Pincer-Plus-One Ligands In Self-Assembly With Palladium(Ii): A Molecular Square And A Molecular Tetrahedron, Ava Behnia, Paul D. Boyle, Mahmood A. Fard, Johanna M. Blacquiere, Richard J. Puddephatt
Chemistry Publications
The combination of a palladium(ii) precursor with a diimine-phenol ligand and an oxidant (H2O2 or O2) under different conditions has, serendipitously, given both a molecular square and a molecular tetrahedron by self-assembly of building blocks comprising palladium(ii) centres coordinated to the oxidised forms of the ligand.

Catalytic Cyclization And Competitive Deactivation With Ru(PR2nR′2) Complexes, J. M. Stubbs, J. P.J. Bow, R. J. Hazlehurst, J. M. Blacquiere
Chemistry Publications
The first successful use of the PR2NR′2 (1,5-R′-3,7-R-1,5-diaza-3,7-diphosphacyclooctane) ligand family toward an organic synthesis is described. The precatalysts [Ru(Cp)(PR2NBn2)(MeCN)]PF6 are active toward cyclization of 2-ethynylbenzyl alcohol at low catalyst loading and mild temperatures. Catalyst performance however is limited by both low conscription and by competitive deactivation.

Testosterone, Migration Distance, And Migratory Timing In Song Sparrows Melospiza Melodia, Alannah H. Lymburner, Tosha R. Kelly, Keith A. Hobson, Elizabeth A. Macdougall-Shackleton, Scott A. Macdougall-Shackleton
Biology Publications
In seasonally migratory animals, migration distance often varies substantially within populations such that individuals breeding at the same site may overwinter different distances from the breeding grounds. Shorter migration may allow earlier return to the breeding grounds, which may be particularly advantageous to males competing to acquire a breeding territory. However, little is known about potential mechanisms that may mediate migration distance. We investigated naturally-occurring variation in androgen levels at the time of arrival to the breeding site and its relationship to overwintering latitude in male and female song sparrows (Melospiza melodia). We used stable isotope analysis of hydrogen …

Acc Neuro-Over-Connectivity Is Associated With Mathematically Modeled Additional Encoding Operations Of Schizophrenia Stroop-Task Performance, Reggie Taylor, Jean Theberge, Peter C Williamson, Maria Densmore, Richard W J Neufeld
Department of Medicine Publications
Functional magnetic resonance imaging at 7.0 Tesla was undertaken among Schizophrenia participants (Sz), and clinical (major mood disorder; MDD) and healthy controls (HC), during performance of the Stoop task. Stroop conditions included congruent and incongruent word color items, color-only items, and word-only items. Previous modeling results extended to this most widely used selective-attention task. All groups executed item-encoding operations (subprocesses of the item encoding process) at the same rate (performance accuracy being similarly high throughout), thus displaying like processing capacity; Sz participants, however, employed more subprocesses for item completions than did the MDD participants, who in turn used more subprocesses …

Whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT) is associated with memory dysfunction. As part of NRG Oncology RTOG 0933, a phase II study of WBRT for brain metastases that conformally avoided the hippocampal stem cell compartment (HA-WBRT), memory was assessed pre-and post-HA-WBRT using both traditional and computerized memory tests. We examined whether the computerized tests yielded similar findings and might serve as possible alternatives for assessment of memory in multi-institution clinical trials. Adult patients with brain metastases received HA-WBRT to 30 Gy in ten fractions and completed Hopkins Verbal Learning Test-Revised (HVLT-R), CogState International Shopping List Test (ISLT) and One Card Learning Test …

Target Margins In Radiotherapy Of Prostate Cancer, Slav Yartsev, Glenn Bauman
Medical Biophysics Publications
We reviewed the literature on the use of margins in radiotherapy of patients with prostate cancer, focusing on different options for image guidance (IG) and technical issues. The search in PubMed database was limited to include studies that involved external beam radiotherapy of the intact prostate. Post-prostatectomy studies, brachytherapy and particle therapy were excluded. Each article was characterized according to the IG strategy used: positioning on external marks using room lasers, bone anatomy and soft tissue match, usage of fiducial markers, electromagnetic tracking and adapted delivery. A lack of uniformity in margin selection among institutions was evident from the review. …
