The Mouse Deafness Locus (Dn) Is Associated With An Inversion On Chromosome 19, Ana M. Viñas, Stacy S. Drury, Margaret M. Deangelis, Zhining Den, Jer Min Huang, Charles I. Berlin, Jay D. Hunt, Mark A. Batzer, Prescott L. Deininger, Bronya J.B. Keats Sep 1998

The Mouse Deafness Locus (Dn) Is Associated With An Inversion On Chromosome 19, Ana M. Viñas, Stacy S. Drury, Margaret M. Deangelis, Zhining Den, Jer Min Huang, Charles I. Berlin, Jay D. Hunt, Mark A. Batzer, Prescott L. Deininger, Bronya J.B. Keats

Faculty Publications

Recombination data for the mouse deafness locus (dn) on chromosome 19 are consistent with the presence of an inversion for which one of the breakpoints is between D19Mit14 and D19Mit96, a distance of less than 226 kb. Fluorescence in situ hybridization studies using a bacterial artificial chromosome on interphase (G1) nuclei provide additional support for the presence of an inversion. The dn gene is probably the orthologue of the human DFNB7/DFNB11 gene on chromosome 9. Copyright (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.

Unitary Representations Of Lie Groups With Reflection Symmetry, Palle E.T. Jorgensen, Gestur Ólafsson Sep 1998

Unitary Representations Of Lie Groups With Reflection Symmetry, Palle E.T. Jorgensen, Gestur Ólafsson

Faculty Publications

We consider the following class of unitary representationsπof some (real) Lie groupGwhich has a matched pair of symmetries described as follows: (i) SupposeGhas a period-2 automorphismτ, and that the Hilbert spaceH(π) carries a unitary operatorJsuch thatJπ=(πτ)J(i.e.,selfsimilarity). (ii) An added symmetry is implied ifH(π) further contains a closed subspaceK0having a certainorder-covarianceproperty, and satisfying theK0-restricted positivity : vJv≥0, ∀v∈K0, where ·· is the inner product inH(π). From (i)-(ii), we get an induced dual representation of an associated dual groupGc. All three properties, selfsimilarity, order-covariance, and positivity, are satisfied in a natural context whenGis semisimple and hermitean; but whenGis the (ax+b)-group, or the …

Hematite And Calcite Coatings On Fossil Vertebrates, Huiming Bao, Paul L. Koch, Robert P. Hepple Sep 1998

Hematite And Calcite Coatings On Fossil Vertebrates, Huiming Bao, Paul L. Koch, Robert P. Hepple

Faculty Publications

Hematite coatings are common on vertebrate fossils from Paleocene/Eocene paleosol deposits in the Bighorn Basin, Wyoming. In general, hematite coatings are found only on fossils and are limited to soils exhibiting hydromorphic features and moderate maturity. Petrographic and isotopic evidence suggests that hematite and micritic calcite formed at nearly the same time in a pedogenic environment, whereas sparry calcite formed later at greater burial depths. The parent material of paleosols is rich in iron, supplying an ample source of iron for hematite formation. Decomposition of animal tissues around bones may enhance the weathering of iron-bearing minerals in soils surrounding carcasses, …

Weak Maps And Stabilizers Of Classes Of Matroids, James Geelen, James Oxley, Dirk Vertigan, Geoff Whittle Aug 1998

Weak Maps And Stabilizers Of Classes Of Matroids, James Geelen, James Oxley, Dirk Vertigan, Geoff Whittle

Faculty Publications

LetFbe a field and letNbe a matroid in a class N ofF-representable matroids that is closed under minors and the taking of duals. ThenNis anF-stabilizer for N if every representation of a 3-connected member of N is determined up to elementary row operations and column scaling by a representation of any one of itsN-minors. The study of stabilizers was initiated by Whittle. This paper extends that study by examining certain types of stabilizers and considering the connection with weak maps. The notion of a universal stabilizer is introduced to identify the underlying matroid structure that guarantees thatNwill be anF′-stabilizer for …

The Three-Species Monomer-Monomer Model In The Reaction-Controlled Limit, Kevin E. Bassler, Dana A. Browne Jul 1998

The Three-Species Monomer-Monomer Model In The Reaction-Controlled Limit, Kevin E. Bassler, Dana A. Browne

Faculty Publications

We study the one-dimensional three-species monomer-monomer reaction model in the reaction-controlled limit using mean-field theory and dynamic Monte Carlo simulations. The phase diagram consists of a reactive steady state bordered by three equivalent adsorbing phases where the surface is saturated with one monomer species. The transitions from the reactive phase are all continuous, while the transitions between adsorbing phases are first order. Bicritical points occur where the reactive phase simultaneously meets two adsorbing phases. The transitions from the reactive to an adsorbing phase show directed percolation critical behaviour, while the universal behaviour at the bicritical points is in the even …

On Packing Minors Into Connected Matroids, Manoel Lemos, James Oxley Jul 1998

On Packing Minors Into Connected Matroids, Manoel Lemos, James Oxley

Faculty Publications

Let N be a matroid with k connected components and M be a minor-minimal connected matroid having N as a minor. This note proves that |E(M) - E(N)| is at most 2k - 2 unless N or its dual is free, in which case |E(M) - E(N)| ≤k - 1. Examples are given to show that these bounds are best possible for all choices for N. A consequence of the main result is that a minimally connected matroid of rank r and maximum circuit size c has at most 2r - c + 2 elements. This bound sharpens a result …

Temporal Coherence Of Ultrashort High-Order Harmonic Pulses, M. Bellini, C. Lyngå, A. Tozzi, M. B. Gaarde, T. W. Hänsch, A. L'Huillier, C. G. Wahlström Jul 1998

Temporal Coherence Of Ultrashort High-Order Harmonic Pulses, M. Bellini, C. Lyngå, A. Tozzi, M. B. Gaarde, T. W. Hänsch, A. L'Huillier, C. G. Wahlström

Faculty Publications

We have studied the temporal coherence of high-order harmonics (up to the 15th order) produced by focusing 100 fs laser pulses into an argon gas jet. We measure the visibility of the interference fringes, produced when two spatially separated harmonic sources interfere in the far field, as a function of the time delay between the two sources. In general, we find long coherence times, comparable to the expected pulse durations of the harmonics. For some of the harmonics, the interference pattern exhibits two regions, with significantly different coherence times. These results are interpreted in terms of different electronic trajectories contributing …

Adrenomedullin Gene Expression Is Developmentally Regulated And Induced By Hypoxia In Rat Ventricular Cardiac Myocytes, Stephania Cormier-Regard, Son V. Nguyen, William C. Claycomb Jul 1998

Adrenomedullin Gene Expression Is Developmentally Regulated And Induced By Hypoxia In Rat Ventricular Cardiac Myocytes, Stephania Cormier-Regard, Son V. Nguyen, William C. Claycomb

Faculty Publications

Adrenomedullin is a recently discovered hypotensive peptide that is expressed in a variety of cell and tissue types. Using the technique of differential display, the adrenomedullin gene was observed to be differentially expressed in developing rat heart. Reverse transcription- polymerase chain reaction analysis revealed that the level of adrenomedullin mRNA was significantly higher in adult ventricular cardiac muscle as compared with embryonic day 17 ventricular cardiac muscle. Adrenomedullin receptor mRNA was constitutively expressed throughout development of the ventricular heart. Two potential hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) consensus binding sites were identified in the mouse adrenomedullin promoter at -1095 and -770 nucleotides from …

Faculty Publications

One enzyme which catalyzes the last step of the formation of the hormone retinoic acid from vitamin A (retinol) is retinal dehydrogenase type II (RalDH2). RalDH2, expressed in the Escherichia coil BL21(DE3) strain, was purified and crystallized using ammonium sulfate as a precipitant. These crystals belong to the space group P212121 (a = 108, b = 150, c = 168 Å, α = β = γ = 90°).

Usher syndrome type 1C (USH1C) occurs in a small population of Acadian descendants from southwestern Louisiana. Linkage and linkage disequilibrium analyses localize USH1C to chromosome 11p between markers D11S1397 and D11S1888, an interval of less than 680 kb. Here, we refine the USH1C linkage to a region less than 400 kb, between genetic markers D11S1397 and D11S1890. Using 17 genetic markers from this interval, we have isolated a contiguous set of 60 bacterial artificial chromosomes (BACs) that span the USH1C critical region. Exon trapping of BAC clones from this region resulted in the recovery of an exon of the nuclear …

Structure And Elasticity Of Cao At High Pressure, Bijaya B. Karki, Jason Crain Jun 1998

Structure And Elasticity Of Cao At High Pressure, Bijaya B. Karki, Jason Crain

Faculty Publications

We investigate the structural and elastic properties of CaO up to 140 GPa using the plane wave pseudopotential method within the local density approximation. Free energy comparison suggests that the transition from the low-pressure sodium chloride (B1) to the high-pressure cesium chloride (B2) structure in CaO occurs at 58 GPa, which falls within the experimental range of 53-70 GPa. The zero-pressure values and initial pressure dependences of the calculated athermal elastic moduli compare favorably with the experiments. We find that the elastic properties of the two phases vary differently with pressure. The degree of the anisotropy strongly increases with pressure …

Enigmatic Phylogeny Of Skuas: An Alternative Hypothesis, M. J. Braun, R. T. Brumfield Jun 1998

Enigmatic Phylogeny Of Skuas: An Alternative Hypothesis, M. J. Braun, R. T. Brumfield

Faculty Publications

Last year, Cohen et al. presented molecular data suggesting the surprising result that both currently recognized genera of skuas, Stercorarius and Catharacta (Aves: Stercorariidae), are not monophyletic. However, the most enigmatic conclusion from their analysis, that S. pomarinus is sister to C. skua, rests solely on mtDNA sequence data. When the mtDNA data are analysed in a maximum likelihood framework that accounts for variation in evolutionary rates, Catharacta monophyly cannot be rejected. None of the best trees that can be derived from two nuclear data sets of Cohen et al. support the controversial pomarinus-C. skua node. We propose an alternative …
