High Performance Software Reconfiguration In The Context Of Distributed Systems And Interconnection Networks., Vinayak Gajanan Hegde

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Designed algorithms that are useful for developing protocols and supporting tools for fault tolerance, dynamic load balancing, and distributing monitoring in loosely coupled multi-processor systems. Four efficient algorithms are developed to learn network topology and reconfigure distributed application programs in execution using the available tools for replication and process migration. The first algorithm provides techniques for transparent software reconfiguration based on process migration in the context of quadtree embeddings in Hypercubes. Our novel approach provides efficient reconfiguration for some classes of faults that may be identified easily. We provide a theoretical characterization to use graph matching, quadratic assignment, and a …

The Role Of Pre-Response And Post-Response Augmented Learning Variables In Motor Skill Acquisition., M. Jerome Hand Jan 1993

The Role Of Pre-Response And Post-Response Augmented Learning Variables In Motor Skill Acquisition., M. Jerome Hand

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Verbal instructions, modeling, videotaped replay (VTR), and knowledge of performance (KP) are augmented learning variables that practitioners commonly present to learners to facilitate the acquisition of motor skill. Two experiments are reported that sought to determine how each of these variables affect skill acquisition and the cognitive representations responsible for producing such skill. Learning variables were classified as pre-response (verbal instructions and modeling) or post-response (VTR and KP), depending whether the information given pertained to the subsequent trial or the previous trial, respectively. Experiment 1 investigated the effects of each variable separately, while Experiment 2 examined whether a combination of …

Toward Understanding Post-Structuralism And Curriculum., Wen-Song Hwu Jan 1993

Toward Understanding Post-Structuralism And Curriculum., Wen-Song Hwu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation describes extensions of post-structuralism in contemporary curriculum discourses. Post-structuralist thought is mainly associated with the seminal work of Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, Gilles Deleuze, Jean-Francois Lyotard, and Michel Serres. Post-structural criticism and analysis challenge prevailing structuralist approaches and question the fundamental assumptions upon which these approaches rest. A key assumption of structural approaches is that all phenomena are constituted by an underlying structure. In curriculum, these structural assumptions (often scientific) remain unacknowledged and thus are immunized against criticism; rather, they are incorporated into the preferred structural analyses, interpretations, and organizations promoted by the promise of order and rationality. …

Synthesis, Isolation, Characterization And Homogeneous Catalytic Reactions Of Racemic- And Meso-Metal Binucleating Tetraphosphine Complexes., Booker Washington Ochieng Juma Jan 1993

Synthesis, Isolation, Characterization And Homogeneous Catalytic Reactions Of Racemic- And Meso-Metal Binucleating Tetraphosphine Complexes., Booker Washington Ochieng Juma

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The tetraphosphine ligand Et$\sb2$PCH$\sb2$CH$\sb2$P(Ph)CH$\sb2$P(Ph)CH$\sb2$CH$\sb2$PEt$ \sb2$ (to be referred to as et,ph-P4) was designed to both bridge and chelate two metal centers and hold them in general proximity to investigate bimetallic cooperativity in homogeneous catalysis. The internal phosphines of et,ph-P4 are chiral, thereby generating a pair of diastereomers: the racemic, and the meso. These are produced in approximately equal amounts from the ligand synthesis. This project has concentrated on the separation and isolation of diastereomerically pure forms of et,ph-P4 to determine individual hydroformylation catalytic activity of each bimetallic complex. Complexes of Ni(NCS)$\sb2$ with et,ph-P4 were effective in accomplishing this separation by …

Partial Purification And Characterization Of A Naturally-Occurring Inhibitor Of Viral Polyprotein Processing., Shaffina John Jan 1993

Partial Purification And Characterization Of A Naturally-Occurring Inhibitor Of Viral Polyprotein Processing., Shaffina John

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

An inhibitor activity that prevents the proteolytic processing of Cowpea Mosaic Virus (CPMV) polyprotein has been discovered in crude wheat germ extracts. CPMV is a comovirus that replicates via the synthesis of two polyproteins which are subsequently cleaved by a viral proteinase to yield the functional viral proteins. Since this scheme of replication is common to many other viral groups, a potential target for antivirals is the proteinase responsible for polyprotein processing. A partial purification of this wheat germ inhibitor activity has been accomplished by classical protein purification methods which include ammonium sulfate precipitation, heat treatment, ion exchange, size exclusion …

Effect Of The El Nino/Southern Oscillation On Gulf Of Mexico, Winter, Frontal-Wave Cyclones: 1960-1989. (Volumes I And Ii)., Rosemary Eileen Manty

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Seasonal counts of frontal-wave cyclones forming over the Gulf of Mexico and its coastal plain show more storms in the five El Nino winters and fewer storms in the eight La Nina winters, from 1960 to 1989, significant at the.01 level by a rank sum test. This is corroborated by two results. First, during the same period, the frequency of frontal-overrunning weather conditions in the region, indicative of storms, was higher in El Nino winters and lower in La Nina winters, significant at the.05 level. Second, 100 years of precipitation and temperature records show wetter, cooler El Nino winters and …

Geologic And Physical Processes At A Gulf Of Mexico Tidal Inlet, East Pass, Florida., Andrew Morang Jan 1993

Geologic And Physical Processes At A Gulf Of Mexico Tidal Inlet, East Pass, Florida., Andrew Morang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

East Pass, a tidal inlet located in the Florida Panhandle between Pensacola and Panama City, connects Choctawhatchee Bay to the Gulf of Mexico. A three-phase model has been developed which describes the behavior of East Pass inlet during the last 120 years, based on wave, current, tide, bathymetric and shoreline data, and on historical records. The first phase (pre-1928) is of spit development and breaching. This phase covers the period when the pass was oriented in a northwest-southeast direction between Choctawhatchee Bay and the Gulf. From 1928 to 1968, the second phase was characterized by a stable throat position but …

Antimicrobial Properties Of Glycerol Monolaurate Either Alone Or Combined With Selected Organic Acids Against Listeria Monocytogenes., Deog-Hwan Oh

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The objective of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial properties of glycerol monolaurate (monolaurin) either alone or in combination with organic acids against Listeria monocytogenes in model broth or food. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of monolaurin was reduced by decreasing the pH value of the medium. The contribution of temperature to monolaurin effectiveness showed that lethal effects of monolaurin increased at higher temperatures and lower pH values, whereas, bacteriostatic effects on growth increased as temperature and pH decreased. The inhibitory effect of ethanol on the growth of L. monocytogenes was slight up to 2.5% ethanol, but was significant …

Studies were conducted in the field and greenhouse to identify sources of rice water weevil (Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus Kuschel) resistance in rice, Oryza sativa L., and determine the mechanisms of resistance. Rice lines of various sources, including breeding lines, somaclone lines and world collection lines, were evaluated. Tolerance was investigated using replicated insecticide treated and untreated plots in a split-plot design, and antibiosis and/or antixenosis were assessed using caged insect-infested plants in randomized block designs. Resistance predictors included rice water weevil larval populations, larval root pruning damage, plant height and grain yield. Anther culture lines 95-2836 and 95-3527, Louisiana breeding lines …

Syntheses, Structures, And Characterizations Of 2,2',7,7'-Tetrasubstituted 1,1'-Ethynylenedinaphthalenes., Philippe Prince Jan 1993

Syntheses, Structures, And Characterizations Of 2,2',7,7'-Tetrasubstituted 1,1'-Ethynylenedinaphthalenes., Philippe Prince

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In order to study intramolecular enzyme catalysis, chemical models have been designed to quantify the proximity and orientation effects which occur in carboxylate catalyzed hydrolyses. As part of this broader study, various 2,2$\sp\prime$,7,7$\sp\prime$-tetrasubstituted 1,1$\sp\prime$-ethynylenedinaphthalenes are synthesized from 2,7-dihydroxynaphthalene. Two different strategies are used to obtain the title compounds. The first strategy involves palladium-mediated couplings between electron-poor aryl iodides and electron-rich arylethynes and allows synthesis of unsymmetrical binaphthylethynes. The second approach couples two 2,7-disubstituted naphthalenes with tetrachlorocyclopropene in the presence of aluminum chloride, but only symmetrical binaphthylethynes are obtained. During the course of this work, a number of 1,2,7-trisubstituted naphthalenes, some …

Discourses Of Maternity And The Postmodern Narrative: A Study Of Lessing, Walker, And Atwood., Janet J. Montelaro Jan 1993

Discourses Of Maternity And The Postmodern Narrative: A Study Of Lessing, Walker, And Atwood., Janet J. Montelaro

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Doris Lessing's The Golden Notebook, Alice Walker's The Color Purple, and Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale are narrated by women whose social identities are partially constructed through activities traditionally associated with mothering. In each text, maternity signifies a biological event as well as the social, sexual, and material relations involved with pregnancy, childbirth, and the nurturing and rearing of children, activities which become grounds for investigating the politics of the body, of sexuality, and consequently, of gender relations. Maternity becomes politicized within the cultural contexts of each novel as maternal experience functions to produce both feminist and postmodernist critiques. In …

Christianity And Social Power In The Works Of John Arden, British Dramatist., Donald Travis Sandley Jan 1993

This dissertation examines the subject of political and social power in the plays and prose of John Arden and selected works co-authored by Arden and his wife, Margaretta D'Arcy. Particular focus is given to the institution of Christianity and how it may either be used as a tool for the maintenance of established authority or as a vehicle for rebellion. Arden's collected essays, along with a personal interview conducted in August of 1990, provide the starting point for a discussion of four specific works, pieces in which Arden most closely explores the political involvement of Christianity. These four works, The …

Origin Of A Coarse-Grained Shallow Marine Sandstone Complex: The Coniacian Tocito Sandstone, Northwestern New Mexico. (Volumes 1 And 2)., Gregory Wayne Riley Jan 1993

Origin Of A Coarse-Grained Shallow Marine Sandstone Complex: The Coniacian Tocito Sandstone, Northwestern New Mexico. (Volumes 1 And 2)., Gregory Wayne Riley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Study of the Coniacian Tocito Sandstone, one of the shale-encased, shallow marine sandstone complexes in the Cretaceous Western Interior Basin, indicates that transport of coarse sediment to distal marine locations was accomplished by an increase in the efficiency of the marine dispersal system (tidal currents). Enhanced tidal currents were a consequence of bathymetric variations formed by uplifts along the pre-existing Four Corners Lineament system. The Tocito Sandstone forms an entirely marine, progradational-transgressive sequence and overlies an unconformity localized along uplifted submarine highs. The lower progradational strata represent the marine portion of a tide-dominated delta that prograded into a tectonically-created "embayment", …

Reliability Analysis Of The Hypercube Architecture., Sieteng Soh Jan 1993

Reliability Analysis Of The Hypercube Architecture., Sieteng Soh

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation presents improved techniques for analyzing network-connected (NCF), 2-connected (2CF), task-based (TBF), and subcube (SF) functionality measures in a hypercube multiprocessor with faulty processing elements (PE) and/or communication elements (CE). These measures help study system-level fault tolerance issues and relate to various application modes in the hypercube. Solutions discussed in the text fall into probabilistic and deterministic models. The probabilistic measure assumes a stochastic graph of the hypercube where PE's and/or CE's may fail with certain probabilities, while the deterministic model considers that some system components are already failed and aims to determine the system functionality. For probabilistic model, …
