The Ethno-Archaeology Of The Houma Indians, Bryan L. Guevin Dec 1983

The Ethno-Archaeology Of The Houma Indians, Bryan L. Guevin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The focus of this research is comprised of two objectives. The first attempts to ethno-historically reconstruct the early historic culture of the Houma Indians of Louisiana based upon seventeenth and eighteenth century archival and documentary sources with attention being paid to such ethnographic aspects as Houma subsistence, social organization, and ceremonialism. The second objective, by way of utilizing additional historical documentation such as early cartographic evidence, predicts and locates historic Houma village sites. An archaeological examination and discussion of these sites is presented in terms of an attempt to diagnostically identify broad ethnic markers within the historic Houma material culture.

Systematics Of The Water Snakes Of The Nerodia Cyclopion Complex, William Edward Sanderson Aug 1983

Systematics Of The Water Snakes Of The Nerodia Cyclopion Complex, William Edward Sanderson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The taxonomic status of the green water snake, Nerodia cyclopion, is re-evaluated. The two recognized subspecies are compared by using a variety of standard morphological characters, and significant differences are noted. Discriminant analysis of head-scale measurements provides highly significant separation of the two taxa. Examination of specimens from the zone of parapatry reveals no evidence of recent gene flow between the taxa. Based on these morphological data, plus the biochemical and ecological data of other workers, I suggest that the subspecies be recognized as full species, Nerodia eyelopion and Nerodia floridana.

The Distribution Of Macrobenthos In Barataria Basin, Louisiana, Antonio Liborio Philomena Feb 1983

The Distribution Of Macrobenthos In Barataria Basin, Louisiana, Antonio Liborio Philomena

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Macrobenthos and environmental variables were measured in the Barataria basin, Louisiana, at 32 stations in November 1978. Three of the stations (Lake Salvador, Little Lake and St. Denis Bayou) were sampled bimonthly from November 1977 through November 1978. Abundance, diversity, and biomass results indicated two different areas: fresh, low-salinity habitats in the upper and middle basin with high biomass, abundance, and diversity, and high-salinity habitats in the lower basin with low biomass, abundance, and diversity. Over the whole basin, crustaceans were the most abundant organisms, while the mollusks dominated the biomass. Insects, nematodes, and oligochaetes were characteristic of freshwater habitats, …

Wind-Driven, Near-Bottom Currents Over The West Louisiana Inner Continental Shelf., Richard Larry Crout Jan 1983

Wind-Driven, Near-Bottom Currents Over The West Louisiana Inner Continental Shelf., Richard Larry Crout

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Forcing mechanisms and water column response over the West Louisiana Inner Continental Shelf (WLICS) are investigated at various temporal and spatial scales. The major mechanisms that have an effect on shallow-water currents over the WLICS are winds, runoff from the Mississippi and Atchafalaya rivers, and circulation of the northwestern Gulf of Mexico. Summer wind stress values are low and currents generally meander over the inner shelf during this period. A shift in the direction of the regional wind stress in late June causes a reversal in the current direction over the west Louisiana shelf. Autumn currents are primarily westward in …

A Study Of The Reading And Speaking Fundamental Vocal Frequency Of Aging Black Adults., Charlotte Anne Ducote Jan 1983

A Study Of The Reading And Speaking Fundamental Vocal Frequency Of Aging Black Adults., Charlotte Anne Ducote

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The present study explored the relationships between fundamental frequency means and range extents for black adults in three decade intervals from 50-79 years of age during two speaking tasks. One hundred thirty-three males and 144 females participated in a spontaneous speaking task. Only 28 males and 65 females were able to participate in the reading activity. The results of the reading central tendencies for males suggested that the mean fundamental frequency increases with age for each decade interval (107.14 Hz, 111.00 Hz, and 129.09 Hz, respectively). The males in the 50- and 60-year decades had significantly lower means than the …

Xps Characterization Of Supported Iron/Ruthenium Carbon Monoxide Hydrogenation Catalyst Systems., Jeffry T. Donner Jan 1983

Xps Characterization Of Supported Iron/Ruthenium Carbon Monoxide Hydrogenation Catalyst Systems., Jeffry T. Donner

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Literature in the field of catalysis is dominated by details of catalytic reactions, operating conditions, and product streams, with little regard for detailed physical characterization of the catalyst materials. It is now understood that knowledge of catalyst properties as a function of reaction properties may lead to the design of more active and/or selective catalysts. Thus, studies in the catalysis field are changing and the present investigation demonstrates the utility of an X-ray photelectron spectroscopic (XPS) characterization of supported iron, ruthenium, and iron-ruthenium bimetallic catalyst systems as a function of catalyst treatment(s). This physical and chemical information of the catalysts …

The Lifestyle Of Merchant Seamen: A Sociological Analysis Of Occupationally Induced Marginality., Craig Joseph Forsyth Jan 1983

The Lifestyle Of Merchant Seamen: A Sociological Analysis Of Occupationally Induced Marginality., Craig Joseph Forsyth

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Marginality is a theme which pervades the social existence of merchant seamen. Work takes place in a setting without long term personal commitments to job, to place, or to co-workers. On the beach, social relations tend toward the transitory, and where long term relations are established, the seaman is forced to partial participation. This research explores the influence of this occupation on social marginality and social integration of its members. Data were collected using a survey instrument from a sample of 251 seamen, both officers and crew. Factors determining variance in levels of alienation are examined, as well as the …

Relationship Between Gene Frequencies And Indices Of Physiological Stress In The Estuarine Gastropod, Thais Haemastoma., David Wendell Garton Jan 1983

Relationship Between Gene Frequencies And Indices Of Physiological Stress In The Estuarine Gastropod, Thais Haemastoma., David Wendell Garton

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The relationship between individual energy budgets and genetic variability was examined in Thais haemastoma acclimated to 7.5, 20 and 35('o)/oo S at 21(DEGREES)C. Energy budgets, after the equations of Crisp (1971), were determined by measuring rates of caloric ingestion, absorption efficiencies, oxygen consumption and ammonia and primary amine excretion. Genotypes at six polymorphic loci coding for soluble enzymes, of 25 total loci assayed, were determined using starch gel electrophoresis. The polymorphic loci examined were those encoding for (alpha)-L-amino peptidase (LAP), phosphoglucomutase (PGM), glucose-6-phosophate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), a non-specific esterase (Est) and two dipeptidases (L-leucyl-L-proline and L-phenylalanyl-L-proline dipeptidases). The genetic variability observed …

Deltaic Sedimentation In Eastern Atchafalaya Bay, Louisiana., Ivor Llewellyn Van Heerden Jan 1983

Deltaic Sedimentation In Eastern Atchafalaya Bay, Louisiana., Ivor Llewellyn Van Heerden

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A new Mississippi delta--now in the subaerial growth phase--is building in Atchafalaya Bay, south-central Louisiana, as the result of a natural upstream di-version. Early studies of this event documented gross accretion in Atchafalaya Bay. The present study focuses on subaerial delta lobe responses, stratigraphic development, and sedimentation processes that are incorporated into a model for delta growth. A sedimentological research program undertaken in the eastern half of the Atchafalaya delta has shown that two distinct stages of subaerial delta response are recognizable. The first (younger) re-sponse consists of channel extension, bifurcation, and development of sinuous overbank channels. A latter, more …

"New Literary History" And The Postmodern Paradigm: Implications For Theatre History., Robert Gerard Staggenborg Jan 1983

"New Literary History" And The Postmodern Paradigm: Implications For Theatre History., Robert Gerard Staggenborg

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Thomas S. Kuhn writes of disciplinary paradigms, presuppositions tactily setting the epistemological boundaries of a particular field or of the vision of a particular epoch. In the past decade, a paradigmatic revolution has deeply altered the western world's sense of reality. A new postmodern paradigm has emerged and evidenced itself in such critical approaches to art as semiotics, phenomenology, poststructuralism, and hermeneutics. The aim of the present study is to identify the central theoretical perspective offered by the new paradigm, to examine and define the central critico-historical principles stemming from such a perspective, and to relate these principles to the …

The Effectiveness Of Video Technology In Safety Training At An Industrial Site., Robert Steven Miller Jan 1983

The Effectiveness Of Video Technology In Safety Training At An Industrial Site., Robert Steven Miller

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Industry has long held to the belief that accidents are caused and they can be prevented. To support this belief, industry in the United States has allocated vast resources for accident prevention. The rationale for this allocation of resources rests on the concern for employees' well-being, federal and state regulations, and the profit incentive. In order to test the most feasible and effective program to generate safety awareness and teach specific safety skills, a system of daily reinforcement using an in-plant cable tablevision capability was conceptualized, designed, implemented and tested. This study presents the findings for the Safety Minutes program …

Testing Standard Modern Paragraph Theories (Becker, Christensen, Rodgers)., Thomas Haskell Utley Jan 1983

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study tests the relative effectiveness of the standard modern paragraph theories of A. L. Becker, Francis Christensen, and Paul C. Rodgers, Jr., three major theorists contributing more sophisiticated explanations of the form of paragraphs than that of Alexander Bain, whose theory as summarized in the familiar principles of unity, coherence, and emphasis has dominated textbook explanations of paragraphing since the late nineteenth century. In this test the three theories have been applied to fourteen selected professional essays appearing in six of the best-selling composition readers. Of these essays, seven, designated as classical, are written by the most frequently anthologized …

The Diversification Service By A Multinational Corporation To Its Shareholders., Ho Chull Yang Jan 1983

The Diversification Service By A Multinational Corporation To Its Shareholders., Ho Chull Yang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In perfect capital markets, optimal investment decisions of a firm involve no incentive for a firm to diversify operations. However, in an imperfect capital market where homemade portfolio diversification incurs higher cost or faces restrictions, operational diversification of a firm may be beneficial to its shareholders. A substantial amount of empirical evidence has supported the hypothesis that U.S. investors would have higher risk adjusted performance through international portfolio investment. In reality, however, some major barriers to international diversification have prevented U.S. investors from diversifying internationally. Consequently, it can be expected that multinationality of a firm would be beneficial to investors. …

The Interrelationships Between Organizational Communication, Organizational Climate, And Job Satisfaction In A Local Government Agency., William Chambliss Sharbrough Iii Jan 1983

The Interrelationships Between Organizational Communication, Organizational Climate, And Job Satisfaction In A Local Government Agency., William Chambliss Sharbrough Iii

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The interrelationships between three multivariate concepts: Organizational communication, organizational climate, and job satisfaction were studied in a local government agency. Demographic data were also studied as they, as a group, related to the three multivariate concepts. Questionnaires were collected from 175 of the 220 employees. Canonical analysis was utilized to analyze the respondents' perceptions of the three concepts and to determine their relationships to the demographic data set. Organizational climate significantly correlated (p < 0.001) with job satisfaction. Only very small, but significant (p < 0.01) redundancy was found between the two concepts. Organizational communication and organizational climate were significantly correlated (p < 0.001). Redundancy analysis indicated that small to moderate redundancies are shared between the concepts for the sample under study. Organizational communication and job satisfaction also exhibited significant correlation (p < 0.001). Redundancy analysis indicated that communication explains a small but significant (p < 0.05) amount of the variance in job satisfaction. However, job satisfaction did not not explain a significant amount of the variance in the communication variable set. For each of the canonical analyses studied, some of the values of the loadings on the components possessed positive signs while others possessed negative signs. Thus, the direction of the relationships between the three concepts remains unclear. Canonical analysis of demographic data and each of the three multivariate concepts was undertaken to determine whether the demographic makeup of the sample was affecting the relationships between the concepts. No significant relationship was found between demographics and organizational climate at the p < 0.05 level. Canonical correlations between the demographic data set and the communication data set were significant beyond p < 0.01. Redundancy analysis indicated that demographics did not explain a significant amount of the variance in communication (p < 0.05). The reverse relationship was significant at p < 0.01, thus clouding the question of the importance of demographics in explaining variance in the communication set. Canonical analysis of the demographic/satisfaction relationship was also significant (p < 0.01). Redundancies yielded similar mixed findings as in the demographics/communication relationship. Conclusions from the analysis were drawn. Limitations to the usefulness of the findings were discussed. Finally, suggestions for further research were made.
