The Ethno-Archaeology Of The Houma Indians, Bryan L. Guevin
The Ethno-Archaeology Of The Houma Indians, Bryan L. Guevin
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The focus of this research is comprised of two objectives. The first attempts to ethno-historically reconstruct the early historic culture of the Houma Indians of Louisiana based upon seventeenth and eighteenth century archival and documentary sources with attention being paid to such ethnographic aspects as Houma subsistence, social organization, and ceremonialism. The second objective, by way of utilizing additional historical documentation such as early cartographic evidence, predicts and locates historic Houma village sites. An archaeological examination and discussion of these sites is presented in terms of an attempt to diagnostically identify broad ethnic markers within the historic Houma material culture.

Coastal Louisiana Recent Land Loss And Canal Impacts, William W. Scaife, R. Eugune Turner, Robert Constanza
Coastal Louisiana Recent Land Loss And Canal Impacts, William W. Scaife, R. Eugune Turner, Robert Constanza
Faculty Publications
Annual coastal land loss in the sedimentary deltaic plain of southern Louisiana is 102 km2, which is correlated with man-made canal surface area. The relationships between land loss and canals are both direct and indirect and are modified by the deltaic substrate, distance to the coast, and availability of new sediments. Loss rates are highest in the youngest of the former deltas nearest the coast; they are lowest in the more consolidated sediments far from the coast. The average estimate for land loss at zero canal density in the six regression equations developed was 0.09%±0.13% annually, the present land loss …
Systematics Of The Water Snakes Of The Nerodia Cyclopion Complex, William Edward Sanderson
Systematics Of The Water Snakes Of The Nerodia Cyclopion Complex, William Edward Sanderson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The taxonomic status of the green water snake, Nerodia cyclopion, is re-evaluated. The two recognized subspecies are compared by using a variety of standard morphological characters, and significant differences are noted. Discriminant analysis of head-scale measurements provides highly significant separation of the two taxa. Examination of specimens from the zone of parapatry reveals no evidence of recent gene flow between the taxa. Based on these morphological data, plus the biochemical and ecological data of other workers, I suggest that the subspecies be recognized as full species, Nerodia eyelopion and Nerodia floridana.

The MR-Value Of Chloroplast Coupling Factor 1, James V. Moroney, Linda Lopresti, Bruce F. Mcewen, Richard E. Mccarty, Gordon G. Hammes
Faculty Publications
The Mr of spinach chloroplast coupling factor 1 has been determined by sedimentation equilibrium and by light scattering to be 400 000 ± 24 600 and 407 000 ± 20 000, respectively. These values differ substantially from that obtained previously (325 000) and are consistent with an α3β3γδε{lunate} subunit stoichiometry. © 1983.

A Study Of Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons On An Amino Bonded Phase Liquid Chromatographic Column In The Normal And Reversed Phase, Dori Karlesky, Dennis C. Shelly, Isiah M. Warner
A Study Of Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons On An Amino Bonded Phase Liquid Chromatographic Column In The Normal And Reversed Phase, Dori Karlesky, Dennis C. Shelly, Isiah M. Warner
Faculty Publications
Experiments were run using an n-propyl amine polar bonded phase (Chromosorb LC-9) liquid chromatographic column in both the normal and reversed phase mode. Results confirm that the mechanism of separation in the normal phase is due mainly to a charge transfer interaction between the lone pair electrons on the stationary phase nitrogen and the π electron cloud of the solute PNAs. Elution order seems to depend upon a combination of π energy, and type of ring condensation of the solute. Plots of log I versus number of aromatic carbons for catacondensed PNAs suggest that while the specific interaction is different …
The Distribution Of Macrobenthos In Barataria Basin, Louisiana, Antonio Liborio Philomena
The Distribution Of Macrobenthos In Barataria Basin, Louisiana, Antonio Liborio Philomena
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Macrobenthos and environmental variables were measured in the Barataria basin, Louisiana, at 32 stations in November 1978. Three of the stations (Lake Salvador, Little Lake and St. Denis Bayou) were sampled bimonthly from November 1977 through November 1978. Abundance, diversity, and biomass results indicated two different areas: fresh, low-salinity habitats in the upper and middle basin with high biomass, abundance, and diversity, and high-salinity habitats in the lower basin with low biomass, abundance, and diversity. Over the whole basin, crustaceans were the most abundant organisms, while the mollusks dominated the biomass. Insects, nematodes, and oligochaetes were characteristic of freshwater habitats, …
Molecular Cloning And Analysis Of The Cry1 Gene: A Yeast Ribosomal Protein Gene, John C. Larkin, John L. Woolford
Molecular Cloning And Analysis Of The Cry1 Gene: A Yeast Ribosomal Protein Gene, John C. Larkin, John L. Woolford
Faculty Publications
Using cloned DNA from the vicinity of the yeast mating type locus (MAT) as a probe, the wild type allele of the cryptopleurine resistance gene CRY1 has been isolated by the technique of chromosome walking and has been shown to be identical to the gene for ribosomal protein 59. A recessive cryRl allele has also been cloned, using the integration excision method. The genetic distance from MAT to CRY1 is 2.2 cM, while the physical distance is 21 kb, giving a ratio of about 10kb/cM for this interval. The phenotypic expression of both plasmid borne alleles of the gene can be …
