Relationship Between Gene Frequencies And Indices Of Physiological Stress In The Estuarine Gastropod, Thais Haemastoma., David Wendell Garton Jan 1983

Relationship Between Gene Frequencies And Indices Of Physiological Stress In The Estuarine Gastropod, Thais Haemastoma., David Wendell Garton

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The relationship between individual energy budgets and genetic variability was examined in Thais haemastoma acclimated to 7.5, 20 and 35('o)/oo S at 21(DEGREES)C. Energy budgets, after the equations of Crisp (1971), were determined by measuring rates of caloric ingestion, absorption efficiencies, oxygen consumption and ammonia and primary amine excretion. Genotypes at six polymorphic loci coding for soluble enzymes, of 25 total loci assayed, were determined using starch gel electrophoresis. The polymorphic loci examined were those encoding for (alpha)-L-amino peptidase (LAP), phosphoglucomutase (PGM), glucose-6-phosophate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), a non-specific esterase (Est) and two dipeptidases (L-leucyl-L-proline and L-phenylalanyl-L-proline dipeptidases). The genetic variability observed …

The Mechanism Of Aldosterone Secretion In Dairy Cattle And The Circadian Rhythm Of Aldosterone, Cortisol And Progesterone In Dairy Cattle During Summer In Louisiana., Teodora Javier Aranas Jan 1983

The Mechanism Of Aldosterone Secretion In Dairy Cattle And The Circadian Rhythm Of Aldosterone, Cortisol And Progesterone In Dairy Cattle During Summer In Louisiana., Teodora Javier Aranas

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A study of the basic mechanism of aldosterone secretion was performed on 15 month old Holstein heifers. Animals were fitted with indwelling jugular catheters and estrous cycle was synchronized with PGF(,2(alpha)). Effects of adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) and angiotensin II (AII) on the secretion of aldosterone, cortisol, progesterone and other parameters such as sodium and potassium that influenced aldosterone secretion were analyzed by Latin Square design, replicated twice. Treatments consisted of intravenous injections of 200 I.U. ACTH/animal, 18 mg AII/animal, or physiological saline. Blood samples were collected before treatment (0 min), at fifteen and thirty minutes after treatment, and at hourly …

Sodium Ion Transport Regulation By A Serotonin Stimulated Adenylate Cyclase System In Freshwater Mussels., John Iver Scheide Jan 1983

Sodium Ion Transport Regulation By A Serotonin Stimulated Adenylate Cyclase System In Freshwater Mussels., John Iver Scheide

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Freshwater bivalves increase Na influx when the mussels were injected with dibutyryl cAMP, serotonin (5-HT), or 5-HT (10('-4) M/l) was added to the bath; a response similar to a sodium depleted mussel. Serotonin stimulated Na influx kinetics (K(,m) = 0.09 mM/l and J(,max) = 4.33 (mu)eq (g dry tissue (.) hr)('-1) were similar to Na depleted mussels. Stimulated Na influx (by dibutyryl cAMP or 5-HT) was inhibited by amiloride (5 x 10('-4) M/l) and the amiloride inhibition was reversible. Serotonin also changes water balance; the 5-HT stimulated mussels gain 0.36 ml H(,2)O (g dry tissue (.) hr)('-1) above controls. Serotonin …

The Effects Of Two Twelve-Week Training Programs On Sequential Measurements Of Blood Lipids, Hormones, Cardiovascular Function, Body Composition, And Strength In Sedentary Middle-Aged Males., Daniel Lee Blessing Jan 1983

The Effects Of Two Twelve-Week Training Programs On Sequential Measurements Of Blood Lipids, Hormones, Cardiovascular Function, Body Composition, And Strength In Sedentary Middle-Aged Males., Daniel Lee Blessing

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A twelve-week study was conducted to determine the effects of weight training and jogging on serum lipids and hormones, cardiovascular function, body composition, and strength. Thirty-three subjects (mean age 45 + 6 years) comprised a weight training group (N = 9), running group (N = 11), and a control group (N = 13). All subjects exercised 3 days per week for 12 weeks. Statistical comparisons were completed by using a 3 x 3 ANOVA with repeated measures on time. Single Degree of Freedom Comparisons were used to examine the specific hypotheses about the differential effects across time among groups. The …

The Relationship Between Fibrinolytic Capacity And Metabolic Control In Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus., William Guyton Hornsby Jr Jan 1983

The Relationship Between Fibrinolytic Capacity And Metabolic Control In Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus., William Guyton Hornsby Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between fibrinolytic capacity and metabolic control in insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. Testing protocol was explained and informed consent was obtained from 26 insulin-dependent diabetics and 20 healthy controls who agreed to serve as subjects. Fibrinolytic capacity (FC) was measured as the change in euglobulin lysis time produced by 10 min of venous occlusion with a sphygmomanometer cuff inflated around the upper arm at a pressure midway between systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Metabolic control was evaluated by measurement of hemoglobin A1 (HbA1) using a minicolumn chromatographic technique. Fasting glucose (GLU), cholesterol …
