In the European musical world, one of the most significant personalities of recent years was Walter Georgii (1887-1967). He was respected not only as one of Germany's most prominent pianist-pedagogues, but also as one of the most authoritative writers in the areas of piano performance and literature. One of Georgii's most important writings was a large work entitled Klaviermusik, the third edition of which appeared in 1956. The book is divided into two parts. Marching band programs and philosophies have changed considerably since the early part of the 1960s. The advent of contemporary marching band concepts (techniques/styles) has had a profound influence on the development, participation, and growth of marching band programs throughout the United States. The marching band continues to evolve into an art form closely associated with the American culture. This report provides an organized and accurate chronology of the history of the LSU School of Music from 1955 to 1979, encompassing the tenure of Dr. Everett L. Timm, as administrator of the School of Music. Areas examined included faculty, curricula, enrollment, degrees awarded, facilities, budget, expenditures, performing groups, performances, and special events. The historical method of research was employed using a two-fold procedure: (1) interviews with present and former students, faculty, and deans; and (2) examinations of University and School of Music records and publications, and reports from local, state, and national publications. Throughout the course of musical history, a multitude of works for solo voice with instrumental accompaniment has been written. Works with only keyboard accompaniment dominate the literature. Works with other than keyboard accompaniment, but not full orchestral accompaniment, occupy a much smaller but still important place in the literature. There is a relative lack of chamber music for solo voice and instruments particularly from the Classical and Romantic periods. However, composing for the human voice has caught the attention of many twentieth-century composers. The contemporary composer, in his search for new textures and timbres, has increasingly written for the voice …
