Assessing Vulnerability To Coastal Hazards Case Study: Gozo, Jonathan Portelli Dec 2010

Assessing Vulnerability To Coastal Hazards Case Study: Gozo, Jonathan Portelli

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

All coastal areas around the globe are vulnerable to a series of potential hazards at different degrees depending on location, altitude above sea level, geomorphological features and socio-economic factors, including demography, human settlement and infrastructural development. Since the 1990s a major effort in developing appropriate methodologies and guidelines to assess coastal vulnerability has been made. Of significant importance, the coast of Gozo embraces both natural and anthropogenic features that occupy a relatively small area. Consequently, coastal vulnerability by multiple coastal hazards is a fact due to the topography of the island, overpopulation in some coastal locations, and intensive coastal development …

A Heuristic For Local Land Planning: Linking Ecological Function And Policy-In Context To Charlotte, North Carolina-, Kimberlee Robertella

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Ecological systems and services are foundational to human well-being, and in recent years have received increasing scholastic attention. The functional ability of these systems is influenced however, by human-induced land transformation related to conventional patterns of growth and development. Such land transformations, which commonly occur as single-family residential development, are criticized as being wasteful and inefficient, leading to issues like air and water pollution, diminished forests and wetlands, and habitat loss and fragmentation. In the United States a patchwork of policy exists aimed at addressing such ecological concerns. Despite best efforts, most local governments and planning offices still miss the …

Addressing Response Requirements And Behavioral Costs In Contingency Management For Smoking Cessation, Brantley Phillip Jarvis

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Despite the efficacy of contingency management (CM) in promoting smoking reduction and abstinence, major barriers continue to hinder its widespread dissemination and adoption. The present study addressed two of these barriers, inefficient response requirements and high behavioral costs, by evaluating a novel payment schedule implemented within a workplace setting. Nine university staff were enrolled in a 6-week ABAB study design. During baseline weeks, participants earned money contingent on session attendance. During CM weeks, participants earned money contingent on smoking reduction or abstention payment arrangements, which were available concurrently. Abstention payments increased in magnitude across treatment weeks whereas reduction payments decreased. …

Moonshining In Rockingham County: A Case Study On Oral Traditions And Folkways, Tiffany W. Cole

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Known as the second oldest profession, moonshining has had a significant presence in Rockingham County since the influx of Scots-Irish settlement in the Shenandoah Valley in the mid-1700s. Once used as a commodity for barter and sale and an ingredient in home remedies, a limited number of people still continue to make moonshine. But the practice is most widespread as the subject of oral histories and folklore as told by Rockingham County residents. Often framed as an honorable tradition whose practitioners were heroes and at times even martyrs in their communities, the collective narrative of those closest to moonshining—the sons, …

Student Leadership Development In High School Band, Gerald Martin Philp May 2010

Student Leadership Development In High School Band, Gerald Martin Philp

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Literature, websites, and research abound with statistics that support the non-musical benefits of a musical education. Among these non-musical benefits are skills and habits that are the subject of a similar number of business management materials, public speakers, and business-centered books devoted to developing and demonstrating personal leadership. Research concerning the process for developing these in the public schools is limited, and in regard to music programs, even more rare. A need for this information is reinforced by professional organizations and agencies that insist upon a society with these skills. The purpose of this study in particular was to describe …

As predicted, significant, positive relationships were found between the Internalization of the thin ideal and the Media, Relationship Status, and Family and Peer influence. Only two of the three hypothesized relationships between Internalization the components of McKinley …

Interteaching And The Testing Effect: How Quizzes Alter The Efficacy Of Interteaching, Tonya Lambert May 2010

Interteaching And The Testing Effect: How Quizzes Alter The Efficacy Of Interteaching, Tonya Lambert

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

In recent years, educational systems have come under great scrutiny. In response to this scrutiny, researchers have developed numerous behavior-analytic teaching methods, the most recent being interteaching. In a growing number of studies, interteaching has proven to be more effective than traditional methods of instruction, but little research has examined ways to make interteaching even more effective. Research on the testing effect suggests that frequent testing may improve student-learning outcomes. Thus, including post-discussion quizzes as a part of interteaching might be one way to make it more effective. In the present study, participants completed interteaching in a simulated classroom setting. …

Working With Depression In Lesbians, Caroline Colvin

Educational Specialist, 2009-2019

Competency in multicultural counseling is one of the challenges counselors face. Women are twice as likely as males to be diagnosed with depression, and some of these women are lesbians. Vulnerability factors for the development of depression in lesbians include internalized homophobia, disclosure issues, minority stress, family rejection, and lack of a sense of belonging. Effective counseling for depression in lesbians combines multicultural competency and awareness of the stages of identity development, along with exploration of both the lesbian’s level of disclosure and her degree of internalized homophobia.
