Narrative Visualization Of The Outcomes Of Federal Investments In Research, Diana Hicks

Diana Hicks

We offer here a narrative visualization entitled: Technology hot spots and the Office of Science and position its contribution within discussion of novel forms of communicating research results as an aid to maximizing use of research evaluation. In this study, patent co-citation analysis was used to systematically identify emerging high impact technologies in the US technology ecosystem and then to establish that Office of Science of the US Department of Energy (DOE) funds research that underpins these technology “hot spots.” We discuss the strengths and weaknesses of this novel form of communicating evaluation results based our experience. The Concept Of Sovereign Equality Of States In International Law, Alex Ansong Dec 2015

The Concept Of Sovereign Equality Of States In International Law, Alex Ansong

Alex Ansong

The notion that the existence of a State must not be based on, inter alia, the military or economic power it wields to assure its existence and prevent interference from other states, has evolved over the centuries and has become a foundational provision in the United Nations Charter. States are deemed equal just by their status as states under international law. Sovereign equality is therefore juridical in nature in that, all states are equal under international law in spite of asymmetries of inequality in areas like military power, geographical and population size, levels of industrialisation and economic development. Transposing this …

O Sherman Act E A Eponimia Das Leis, Victor J. Calvete Dec 2015

O Sherman Act E A Eponimia Das Leis, Victor J. Calvete

Victor J. Calvete

In the first session of the 51th Congress of the United States, two statutes were approved named after Senator John Sherman: the Sherman Silver Act and the Sherman Anti-trust Act. In his Mémoirs the Senator admits (and regrets) the eponimy in the first case, but does not aknowledge the second. It might have been a surprise to him to know that the Judiciary's Committee version that superseeded the Finance Committee's one - the one that he introduced in December 1889 as S. 1 - came to be graced with his name. The point is that trying to illuminate the 1890 …

A History Of Andragogy And Its Documents As They Pertain To Adult Basic And Literacy Education, John A. Henschke Edd

John A. Henschke

This paper on the History and Philosophy of Andragogy includes items related to andragogy, especially as they apply to adult basic and literacy learners as well as the instructors and educators that facilitate the learning of these adults. Many of these documents as well as the accompanying experience of the author have been discovered and accumulated over a period of 16 years. While this article contains only 70 documents, there are now more than 500 documents covering wider and more extensive andragogical research. These particular documents, though limited to the English language, are arranged chronologically and have been obtained from …

The Past Of Japanese Science Fiction And Fantasy Movies, Aaron Gerow Dec 2015

The Past Of Japanese Science Fiction And Fantasy Movies, Aaron Gerow

Aaron Gerow

A chapter written for the catalog of a special retrospective of Japanese science fiction and fantasy films, titled Beyond Godzilla: Alternative Futures and Fantasies in Japanese Cinema, that Mark Schilling curated for the Far East Film Festival in Udine, Italy. Directed at a general audience, the chapter surveys examples of efforts to produce science fiction or fantasy films in prewar Japan, focusing on early monster films and examples of movie robots—even in samurai films. I argue how most such films were mostly shunted to the margins of the industry with the exception of Toho starting in the late 1930s.

Such pathways encourage greater variation in librarian skillsets as well as diversity in age, race and ethnicity. This poster will provide a unique perspective on residency-related initiatives by discussing public library, archive, academic library, and paraprofessional residency programs. The primary focus will be on the design and implementation of these programs, as well as resident first -hand experiences.

Business Curriculum Mapping In A Flash! Strategic Ways To Target Essential Learning In Business Instruction, Nataly Blas Dec 2015

Business Curriculum Mapping In A Flash! Strategic Ways To Target Essential Learning In Business Instruction, Nataly Blas

Nataly Blas

How can librarians incorporate innovative practices that provide insight into creating valuable student learning experiences? This lightning talk will chronicle how the business librarian used the curriculum map technique to identify information literacy skills and target essential learning in the business curriculum. The curriculum mapping process required the analysis of business course syllabi and the identification of relevant information literacy learning outcomes at institutional, departmental, and course levels. National standards and threshold concepts from the business literature were evaluated as well. This process helped pinpoint which learning outcomes lead to learning activities that promote practical information literacy skills needed by …

The Environmental Justice Implications Of Biofuels, Carmen G. Gonzalez Dec 2015

The Environmental Justice Implications Of Biofuels, Carmen G. Gonzalez

Carmen G. Gonzalez

Analyses of the viability of biofuels as alternatives to fossil fuels have

often adopted a technocratic approach that focuses on environmental

consequences, but places less emphasis on the impact that biofuels may have

on vulnerable populations. This Article fills the gap in the existing literature

by evaluating biofuels through the lens of environmental justice – including

climate justice and food justice. The Article examines the impact of biofuels

on the global food system and on the planet’s most food-insecure

populations. It concludes that the laws and policies promoting the

cultivation of biofuels have contributed to global malnourishment by raising

food …

Remands By Deception, William M. Janssen Dec 2015

Remands By Deception, William M. Janssen

William M. Janssen

Federal statutory law sharply limits the judiciary's ability to revisit rulings that remand a removed case back to its originating State court. This article finds that "vacating" such remand orders should be permitted if they are found to have been deceptively induced by litigant misrepresentations made to the remanding court.

Of Progressive Property And Public Debt, Christopher K. Odinet Dec 2015

Of Progressive Property And Public Debt, Christopher K. Odinet

Christopher K. Odinet

Debt is property, and, because of this, property law has a lot to say about how debts are resolved. Indeed, property law is deeply woven into the fabric of the bankruptcy process — a fact that has been woefully neglected by many scholars. The ability to provide debtors with relief and the ability of creditors to demand protections from discharge or diminished payments are both concepts that are intimately tied to property law. However, despite the doctrinal workings of property law in this context, from a theoretical standpoint property law has been underutilized. This is particularly true, as this Article …

‘Going Out’ Or Staying In? The Expansion Of Chinese Ngos In Africa, Jennifer Yj Hsu, Timothy Hildebrandt, Reza Hasmath Dec 2015

‘Going Out’ Or Staying In? The Expansion Of Chinese Ngos In Africa, Jennifer Yj Hsu, Timothy Hildebrandt, Reza Hasmath

Reza Hasmath

This article examines the overseas behaviour of Chinese non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in two African nations, Ethiopia an Malawi, with varying political regime types. Our inding suggest that, irrespective of regime type, Chinese NGOs have yet to make a substantial impact in either nation. We argue that, espite the strength o the Chinese state an high level of international development assistance given, domestic politics and regulatory frameworks in host nations still matter a great deal. Our study suggests that the Chinese model of international development will continue to be one in which temporary one-off projects are favoured; and, insofar as social …

What Drives Contemporary Eu-China Strategic Engagement?, Natalia Wyzycka, Reza Hasmath Dec 2015

What Drives Contemporary Eu-China Strategic Engagement?, Natalia Wyzycka, Reza Hasmath

Reza Hasmath

This study examines the determinants of the European Union’s strategic engagement with China, with reference to three competing analytical approaches: institutional, social, and agency/stakeholder. The article examines the utility of each claim and outlines complementary variables amongst the three approaches, with the aid of recent evidence looking at the E.U.’s arms embargo on China, E.U.-China engagement in Africa, and the E.U.’s longstanding dispute on granting China market economy status. The findings can reduce the misunderstandings and uncertainties embedded in European Union-China interactions by demystifying the factors and variables that drive their relationship.

Physiatrists’ Professional Opinions Of Secondary Complications After Spinal Cord Injury, Noel A. Ysasi, Irmo Marini, Bradley Mcdaniels, Roy Chen, Lisa R. Dunkley, Shelby Kerwin Dec 2015

Physiatrists’ Professional Opinions Of Secondary Complications After Spinal Cord Injury, Noel A. Ysasi, Irmo Marini, Bradley Mcdaniels, Roy Chen, Lisa R. Dunkley, Shelby Kerwin

Lisa R. Dunkley

The professional opinions of physiatrists were collected to ascertain the likelihood of occurrence, frequency of hospitalization, and treatment required as a direct result of 13 secondary complications (SCs) of two otherwise healthy males in their mid-20s, one with a C5-C6 tetraplegia and the other with T6 paraplegia spinal cord injury. Physiatrists responded to our online survey and overall, a general consensus was found among practitioners. Descriptive statistics was implemented with details outlining the frequency, mean, standard deviations, and the probability (51% or greater) versus possibility (50% or less) of SC occurrence is provided. Implications for life care planners and recommendations …
