Land And Tenure In Early Colonial Peru: Individualizing The Sapci, "That Which Is Common To All", Susan E. Ramirez
Land And Tenure In Early Colonial Peru: Individualizing The Sapci, "That Which Is Common To All", Susan E. Ramirez
The Medieval Globe
This article compares and contrasts pre-Columbian indigenous customary law regarding land possession and use with the legal norms and concepts gradually imposed and implemented by the Spanish colonial state in the Viceroyalty of Peru in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Natives accepted oral histories of possession going back as many as ten generations as proof of a claim to land. Indigenous custom also provided that a family could claim as much land as it could use for as long as it could use it: labor established rights of possession and use. The Spanish introduced the concept of private property …
Elemental Analysis Of Colonial Period Ceramics From Moquegua, Peru, Joshua Wackett
Elemental Analysis Of Colonial Period Ceramics From Moquegua, Peru, Joshua Wackett
Anthropology Theses
Recent scholarship demonstrates growth in archaeological analysis of Spanish colonial reducciones in Andean South America. Critical to understanding the impact of reducciones on indigenous populations is examining production and circulation of craft goods after Spanish conquest. Because it characterizes the elemental composition of archaeological pottery, Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) is an invaluable tool for examining resource procurement and long distance exchange. In this thesis, I report data derived from XRF and LA-ICP-MS analyses of pottery from two sites in the Moquegua Valley, Peru: Torata Alta and Sabaya. Both sites were founded during Inca control of the …

Theses and Dissertations
Negative Capability is video installation inspired by a series of recorded interviews with my mother, a Uruguayan psychoanalyst. Our talks revolved around dream interpretation, how meaning arises out of chaos, what to do when one doesn’t know what to do, and how to tell when something must end.

The presence in the classrooms of immigrant students who do not speak the language of the host country is posing new challenges for those teachers who have to teach them in and through the new language. Therefore, the pedagogical preparation of the latter should include courses on second language acquisition theories, methods, and strategies. The present article summarizes the second language teaching methods traditionally used in second language teaching, describes the most significant advances carried out in the area, and presents a model to help teachers of students with limited knowledge of the language prepare well-organized lessons with which to …

Publications and Research

Cultural Encounters, Conflicts, and Resolutions
The Spanish-language anthology Caminos para la paz: Literatura israelí y árabe en castellano (Buenos Aires: Corregidor, 2007) [Paths towards/for Peace: Israeli and Arab literature in Castilian], compiled by Ignacio López-Calvo and Cristián Ricci, offers us a collection of over thirty reflections—some Jewish, others Muslim—about the millennial but also contemporary situation of two literally related and historic peoples in a language—Spanish—that seemingly allows them to inhabit the same, this time uncontested, space. Despite the potentially questionable title of the work, which couches the conflict as that of a nation-state versus a nation and/or two peoples contesting rights to one same land, …

The Effects Of Sign Language On Second Language Acquisition, Itzel Mejia-Menendez
Masters of Arts in Education Action Research Papers
This action research project examined the effects of sign language on the ability of primary students to learn new Spanish vocabulary in a bilingual Montessori classroom. The research took place at a public charter Montessori school in Washington, District of Columbia. Twenty-seven primary school aged children were included in this seven-week study. Sources of data collection included a parent-teacher questionnaire, a baseline assessment, daily observation logs, a daily checklist, a weekly journal, and a summative assessment. Students were grouped by Spanish fluency and taught eight different vocabulary words in Spanish. Half of the words were taught alongside a sign in …
