A Study Of Pollen, Sterility, And Blossoming Dates Of Plum Varieties In The Experimental Nursery At South Dakota State College During The Spring Of 1926, Russell W. Vance Jan 1927

A Study Of Pollen, Sterility, And Blossoming Dates Of Plum Varieties In The Experimental Nursery At South Dakota State College During The Spring Of 1926, Russell W. Vance

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Agricultural Census of the United States for 1920 shows that plums rank second to apples in value in comparison with the other orchard fruits, small fruits and grapes produced in South Dakota. There was an eighty-two percent increase in the value of all orchard fruits produced during the year 1919 over the year 1909. The fact that the majority of the more important commercial varieties of plums are entirely self-sterile and others more or less self-sterile is often one reason for the total or partial failure of the orchard to produce fruit when a plot is planted to one …

The Influence Of A High And Low Vitamin Content In Nutrition., Ruth Lovelace Jan 1927

The Influence Of A High And Low Vitamin Content In Nutrition., Ruth Lovelace

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the bulk of experiments on animal feeding the Albino Rat has served as the experimental animal. It has been proved that any diet which brings about satisfactory growth in white rats will also cause a young child to grow satisfactorily. Therefore, much attention is given to the breeding of such rats for experimental and scientific use. In the earlier stages of experimental work it was found that a diet which contained sufficient protein material and which yielded the proper number of calories because of the fat, sugar, and starch present, was a satisfactory diet. Later investigations showed that animals …

The Education Of The Natural Man : A Study In The Political Philosophy Of J. J. Rousseau., Esther E. Mason Jan 1927

The Education Of The Natural Man : A Study In The Political Philosophy Of J. J. Rousseau., Esther E. Mason

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In these, the opening words of Emile, Rousseau admits us to a knowledge of one of the principles of his thought. Everything is good, he thinks, as it comes from the hand of God. It becomes bad through the interference of man with the work of nature. We might assume, then, that the interference is bad, and that man was better, more virtuous, before he was interfered with, or educated. And as a matter of fact, Rousseau found some such answer to the problem when it first presented itself to him. In Emile he finds another and more practical solution, …

Religious Experience In The Light Of Current Psychology., Elwyn Judson Trueblood 1896-1963 Jan 1927

Religious Experience In The Light Of Current Psychology., Elwyn Judson Trueblood 1896-1963

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Psychology is receiving a new emphasis in the modern age. The subject of human consciousness, always fascinating, is now claiming our attention as never before. When we endeavor to link psychology with religion, the charm is greatly increased; for then we are dealing with two themes, rather than one, in which mankind has an abiding interest -- the human consciousness and the human soul. Thus, the psychology of religion has grown to be one of the most popular studies of our generation. Indeed, an eminent authority in this field ventures the opinion that the theoretical as well as the practical …

A Study Of The Progressive Movement Of 1912 And Of The Third Party Movement Of 1924 In The State Of Maine, Elizabeth Ring Jun 1926

A Study Of The Progressive Movement Of 1912 And Of The Third Party Movement Of 1924 In The State Of Maine, Elizabeth Ring

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this paper is two-fold. First, a study will be made of the Progressive movement of 1912 in the state of Maine. This will include a narration of events and an analysis of the causes and results in state politics. Secondly, the Third Party of 1924 will be taken up and treated similarly. A conclusion will then be made giving the relative purposes of the two movements showing from what groups each drew its adherents and why the movements were supported by these groups.

An Investigation To Determine The Relative Feeding Value Of Stacked Green Corn Compared To Corn Fodder; Corn Silage Plus Alfalfa Hay; And Alfalfa Hay Alone As A Preliminary Feed For Fattening Cattle, John Hetland Jan 1926

An Investigation To Determine The Relative Feeding Value Of Stacked Green Corn Compared To Corn Fodder; Corn Silage Plus Alfalfa Hay; And Alfalfa Hay Alone As A Preliminary Feed For Fattening Cattle, John Hetland

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although a number of feeding experiences have been conducted during the past few years to determine the feeding value of corn fodder, corn silage, and alfalfa hay as preliminary feeds for fattening cattle, and results of same have been published, there seems however, to be no available information on the results of the feeding value of stacked green corn for this purpose. Information regarding the latter has, however, been sought by many feeders, and a number of inquiries as to the feeding value of stacked green corn are received every year by this Experiment Station. It is evident, therefore, that …

Recent Developments In X-Rays, Orville G. Mcmillan Jan 1926

Recent Developments In X-Rays, Orville G. Mcmillan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Geissler tube is the pioneer of many wonderful discoveries and speculations. The close study given to the discharge tube has been repaid by the manifold achievements of scientists following Roentgen’s investigations. Many theories have been offered to account for the nature of X-rays though none have satisfactorily explained the phenomena. With the discovery that they can be reflected and diffracted from crystals, increased interest has been shown in the attempt to reconcile certain theories with the observed facts. The classical electron theory and the quantum principles are now used though they appear to conflict with each other in certain …

The Effects Of Ice Cream In The Diet Of Young Life., Mildred A. Schneiderhan Jan 1926

The Effects Of Ice Cream In The Diet Of Young Life., Mildred A. Schneiderhan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Much work has been done in the past on the nutritional value in young life of different dairy products, all of which experiments have been carried to successful completion by various men at different times. There is, however, no published information demonstrating the comparative values resulting from experimental work in the nutritional value of ice cream as a supplementary diet in infant life. For the purpose of the following experiments, the albino rat, (Mus Norvegicus Albinus) and the Norway rat, (Mus Nor vegicus), together with Guinea Pigs and cats were used. It is a well-known fact that rats exhibit the …

The Hecyra Of Terence., Jonah W. D. Skiles Jan 1926

The Hecyra Of Terence., Jonah W. D. Skiles

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In submitting this thesis, the writer does not pretend to have made even an approximation of exhaustive study of the Hecyra: this thesis is merely a study of the play from certain viewpoints which also make no claim to completeness. No originality is claimed for the discussion of Terence and of the Hecyra. The rest of the thesis has a fair claim to originality in that it’s the product of the writer’s research, aided of course by various comments and notes. The translation is especially indebted to the Latin paraphrase in the Delphin Classics and to various notes and synonyms …

Preparation Of Acridyl Ethyl Amine., Louis Harold Howland 1902-1964 Jan 1926

Preparation Of Acridyl Ethyl Amine., Louis Harold Howland 1902-1964

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Acridine is a compound that has a ring system similar to anthracene except that one of the CH groups is replaced by a -N- group. It is possible for this compound to have desmotropic forms as those that follow. When an amino group is present in the 3 or 6 position, there is possible another desmotropic form that probably causes a deepening in the color of the compound. Acridine and its derivatives are obtained by the destructive distillation of coal. It occurs in the crude anthracene obtained from the coal tar. Many of its derivatives are used as dyes and …

The Relative Feeding Value Of Ground Soybeans And Soybean Oilmeal For Milk And Butterfat Production By The Dairy Cow, Harold J. Brooks Jan 1926

The Relative Feeding Value Of Ground Soybeans And Soybean Oilmeal For Milk And Butterfat Production By The Dairy Cow, Harold J. Brooks

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The development of the soybean to a crop of great importance the past few years has been more rapid, perhaps, than that of any other plant. Most particularly is this true of its rise in the United States. Figures from the U.S. Yearbook show that in 1917 there were only 460,000 acres of the crop planted for all purposes, this however representing a 50% increase over 1916. In 1924, 2,566,000 acres were planted for all purposes, and 1925 figures show a greater increase of 25%. Theacreage for seed production alone increased from 168,000 acres in 1919 to 452,000 acres in …

Studies On The Epidemiology Of Stem Rust In South Dakota, Raymond O. Bulger Jan 1926

Studies On The Epidemiology Of Stem Rust In South Dakota, Raymond O. Bulger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The economic importance and general distribution of stem rust (Puccinia graminis) has warranted unlimited study and discussion of this plant disease among scientific and practical grain growers. Most of the study has been on the life cycle of stem rust in order to suggest control measures. Some workers express considerable importance on the heterocism of the fungus, thus favoring the elimination of the alternate hosts, which are universally adopted as species of the Berberis and related genera. Others recognize the importance of the alternate hosts, but do not believe in their indispensability. Since the campaign for the eradication of rust-susceptible …

Reconstruction In Kentucky., John W. Manning Jan 1926

Reconstruction In Kentucky., John W. Manning

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Reconstruction began in Kentucky somewhat sooner than in the States south of the Blue Grass Commonwealth. As soon as the invading Confederate army withdrew from the State in 1862, loyal Kentuckians began to prepare for peaceful pursuits and to restore the State, as best they could, to somewhat the position it occupied before the war between the states. Of course it was impossible to remake the State as it was before the struggle, but at least the civil authority could be restored, and the State prepared for the reign of peace. The dates 1862 to 1870 have been selected as …

The Influence Of Sixteenth Century Voyages On Elizabethan Literature., Elizabeth Nugent Jan 1926

The Influence Of Sixteenth Century Voyages On Elizabethan Literature., Elizabeth Nugent

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is the purpose of this thesis to show what influence the sixteenth century voyagers had on the Elizabethan writers. For expediency, we have divided these voyages into two classes: namely, the early, from Columbus, 1492, to Vasca de Gama, 1498; and the later voyagers from de Gama to Captain Smith, 1603. We find that commerce instigated nearly all early navigation. The Turks having cut off the Mediterranean trade route with India in 1453, it was necessary to find another water route to this country. As a direct consequence, Columbus discovered the West Indies in 1492 and claimed the new …

Sir Richard Steele, Reformer., H. Carter Davidson Jan 1926

Sir Richard Steele, Reformer., H. Carter Davidson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Because the critics of the eighteenth century admired form more than thought, Sir Richard Steele has been sadly neglected and all honours have been heaped upon his literary partner, Joseph Addison. Slowly the readers of the twentieth century are beginning to realize that Steele had all the originality, while Addison had nothing but polish. It is to present a few of the astoundingly original and influential ideas of Steele that this paper has been written. To the best of my knowledge after some extended search, the reforms of Richard Steele have not been treated, at least not in the manner …

The Farce Element In Moliere., Louise Diecks Jan 1926

The Farce Element In Moliere., Louise Diecks

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

To gain a true appreciation of the works of any author, we must first be familiar with his race, his environment, and the period in which and of which he wrote. The Paris of the early seventeenth century was far different from the modern metropolis of today. It was the Paris of ill-paved, badly lighted streets where beggar and peasant starved and marquises rolled by in their emblazoned coaches, where d’Artagnan and the King’s musketeers spread romance and challenged authority and where conspiracy brewed and criminals died upon the pillory. It was a pleasure-loving and pleasure-seeking, merry, carefree populace in …

Synthesis Of Nitro Acridine Derivatives., Martin Friedrich Jan 1926

Synthesis Of Nitro Acridine Derivatives., Martin Friedrich

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

At the present time there is not much known about derivatives of acridine. However, there are derivatives of acridine which are important as dyes, drugs and antiseptics. Chrysaniline, rheonine, benzoflavine, are examples of leather dyes which are used extensively. The theory of Perkins and Robinson, says that the acridine ring system is probably present in strychnine and brucine, so a further study of the derivatives of acridine may shed light on the true structure of these alkaloids. Some derivatives of acridine such as rivanol and acriflavine have a specific physiological effect, others are used as silver salts in killing of …

Acridine And Its Derivatives., Altemiro Ferreira Vianna Jan 1926

Acridine And Its Derivatives., Altemiro Ferreira Vianna

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Acridine was discovered by Graebe and Caro who found that it accompanied the crude anthracene obtained from coal-tar. For its isolation, the portion of the tar distilling at 300°- 360° C. was extracted by dilute sulphuric acid and precipitated by potassium dichromate, the precipitate recrystallized from hot water and then decomposed by dilute ammonia. The free base was then dissolved in hot hydrochloric acid, from this solution acridine hydrochloride was thrown out by addition of an excess of concentrated hydrochloric acid. From this salt the free acridine was liberated by ammonia.

The Kentucky Mountains During The Civil War., Artus James 1891-1979 May 1925

The Kentucky Mountains During The Civil War., Artus James 1891-1979

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the early days of 1861, Kentucky, torn between her allegiance to the federal government and her sympathy for the South, with her citizenry so divided that hardly a family in the state stood united, vainly endeavored to carve out for herself a niche of security in the midst of the chaos of war. Continuing her position as one of the United States, she yet attempted to assume a position of neutrality towards the two belligerents--the United States of which she was a part and the Confederacy.

Mably On International War And Peace., Kenneth Leeds Holmes May 1925

Mably On International War And Peace., Kenneth Leeds Holmes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study of Mably’s works was undertaken because of the scant treatment thus far accorded the writings of a philosopher, important in his own century, and peculiarly interesting today in view of the present partial realization of many of his plans for the improvement of society. It was at first intended to make the subject of this paper an exposition of Mably’s communistic theories. That it is not, is partly due to accident. The reading of his works in the order of their composition, necessitated beginning with his Principes des Negotiations which, though not written first, was designed as an …

Quantitative Determination Of The Elements In The Nodes And Internodes Of Normal And Abnormal Corn Plants, Percy Danielson Jan 1925

Quantitative Determination Of The Elements In The Nodes And Internodes Of Normal And Abnormal Corn Plants, Percy Danielson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the last decade the annual loss due to corn rot diseases has been so great that much attention has been given this problem. These diseases, according to several authorities are caused by certain fungi and bacteria which live parasitically upon the corn plant and are known as root, stalk and ear rots. Several species are found on the seed and start growth as soon as the seed germinates. These same species are found living in the soil. When these organisms are found to be prevalent on the seed and in the soil all stages of growth in the corn …

A Chemical And Morphological Study Of Grindelia Squarrosa (Pursh) Dunal, Marcus A. Chase Jan 1925

A Chemical And Morphological Study Of Grindelia Squarrosa (Pursh) Dunal, Marcus A. Chase

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A species of Grindelia known as Gum, Rosin or Tar weed, is of common occurrence on dry banks and sandy soils in various parts of South Dakota. During day seasons it attains such a dense growth in closely cropped pastures that horses feeding in them have their heads and manes covered with a black tarry-like substance, and their fetlocks collects fairly large ball of this tarry mass. In dry years the development of the weed is so rapid that the grass in a closely cropped pasture may be nearly exterminated during a single season. A pasture may seem to be …

Word-Play In Shakespeare., Mary E. Burton Jan 1925

Word-Play In Shakespeare., Mary E. Burton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A careful perusal of Shakespeare’s works leads to one outstanding conclusion. Shakespeare was preeminently interested in words, as such. His every play shows a painstaking attention to words in their various shades of meaning. It is our interest to present some definite proof of this extraordinary emphasis on words, and to attempt in a small way to explain the reason for this particular trait of Shakespeare’s. Certainly as skillful a playwright as he would not have included so many carefully planned word-plays in his dramas if the audience of the time were not interested in the language itself as well …

John Donne The Preacher., Dick Houston Hall Jan 1925

John Donne The Preacher., Dick Houston Hall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the year 1573 when Shakespeare and Marlowe were already boys of nine, Chapman in adolescence, Spenser, Lyly and Richard Hooker men of twenty, John Donne, then important to only a few but destined to the company of royalty, was born. Walton says, in his very excellent but inadequate and often inaccurate “Lives of Dr. John Donne, etc.,” that his father as descended “from an ancient and worth family in Wales.” Gosse, however, calls this simply “a pious wish” because nothing is known of his father’s parentage. He was prosperous iron merchant of London, who died in 1576 leaving his …

Resonance In Magnetically Coupled, Tuned Circuits, H. D. Craun Jan 1925

Resonance In Magnetically Coupled, Tuned Circuits, H. D. Craun

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This paper is devoted to a study of resonance in magnetically coupled, tuned circuits, the primary having impressed on it a sinusoidal e.m.f. and containing capacity, inductance and resistance, the secondary circuit being the same as the primary except that the e.m.f. is induced by the primary. Two such circuits are represented in figure 1. The ordinary radio receiving or broadcasting se consists fundamentally of two such circuits. In the receiving set the e.m.f. in the primary is received from the waves in the ether, the ariel and ground being similar to the generator connections as show in the figure. …

The Relation Of Respiration, Transpiration, And Loss Of Weight To Surface Area And Number Of Lenticles In Potato Tubers, Walter H. Michaels Jan 1925

The Relation Of Respiration, Transpiration, And Loss Of Weight To Surface Area And Number Of Lenticles In Potato Tubers, Walter H. Michaels

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although considerable work has been done on the respiration of potato tubers most of it has been concerned with internal changes. Some very interesting correlations have been secured but the more recent work, particularly that of Bennet and Bartholomew (8) points to the permeability of the epidermis as the big controlling factor in respiration. It is a commonly accepted fact that the purpose of lenticels is to serve as an aperture through which the gases concerned in respiration may pass. The lenticels of the potato tuber should be no exception. The surface area should also greatly influence respiration since a …

The Influence Of Starter On The Keeping Quality Of Butter, J. Kenneth Muse Jan 1925

The Influence Of Starter On The Keeping Quality Of Butter, J. Kenneth Muse

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Butter is the most important product of the dairy industry. Therefore, experimental work which indicates how the quality of butter may be improved is of considerable value. The present methods of handling cream and making butter are largely responsible for the mediocre quality of much of the American butter. The quality of the cream is not in the control of the buttermaker, except as he may improve it through impressing the producers with the importance of producing high grade cream. Manufacturing methods are, however, in the control of the buttermaker, and he should profit by the research work which has …

The Condensation Of Formaldehyde And Methyl Acridine., Clifford Albin Belch 1887-1973 Jan 1925

The Condensation Of Formaldehyde And Methyl Acridine., Clifford Albin Belch 1887-1973

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Very little is known about the acridine ring system. Such compounds as acriflavine, brucine and strychnine are generally believed to contain the acridine ring system. These compounds are all very important drugs. Acriflavine has been used in the treatment of diseases which are due, in whole or in part, to tropanasoma. Strychnine and brucine which may have many and varied uses need not be described here but they are natural plant products. For this reason, acridine derivatives are interesting. Other derivatives of the acridine type should be of some interest. Methylacridine lends itself to reactions readily. Its condensation with formaldehyde …

Philippine Education Prior To Magellan., Morris Uberta Lively Jan 1925

Philippine Education Prior To Magellan., Morris Uberta Lively

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In studying the culture of any people we learn that no group has been absolutely independent of influences from other people. No man indeed can say that he has attained anything of value absolutely by himself; an individual must give credit to the contributions of other men, nations and races of people past and present. So must a nation glean its culture from that of other people. The Roman Empire is a splendid example of this gleaning of culture. Their culture came from contributions made by the Greeks, the Jews and from the people of northern Africa as well as …

The Neutrality Of Kentucky In 1861., Jennie Angell Mengel 1872-1934 Jan 1925

The Neutrality Of Kentucky In 1861., Jennie Angell Mengel 1872-1934

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the year 1924 - 1925 a seminar on the Civil War in Kentucky was held in the University of Louisville under the direction of Dr. R. S. Cotterill of the Department of History. Among the subjects studied the Neutrality of the State in 1861 seemed to arouse the most discussion and the most divergent opinions. For this reason I have been interested in pursuing the subject further and in embodying the results of my study in this thesis. Most of the material on which the thesis is based has been presented to the seminar and been criticized by the …
