Corn (Zea mays L.) hybrids with rapid ear moisture loss rate (EMLR) are needed to reduce post-harvest production costs relative to artificial grain drying. Previous investigations indicated that genetic variation for grain dry-down rate existed; however, genotype by environment interaction (GEI) for this trait has not been specifically investigated. The objectives of this study were: (1) to evaluate EMLR and stability of selected commercial corn hybrids in different environments, (2) to determine approximate optimum numbers of plants per plot, replications, and environments for evaluating EMLR, and (3) to assess the contribution of known environmental factors to GEI for EMLR. Edwardsiella ictaluri is the causative agent of enteric septicemia of catfish (ESC), which is the most serious disease affecting the channel catfish industry. Killed vaccines have been inconsistent in providing protection against ESC, and no live attenuated vaccines have been described. The purpose of this study was to develop a nutritionally attenuated mutant strain of E. ictaluri and evaluate its virulence and vaccine efficacy. An E. ictaluri genomic library was constructed, and a clone containing the purA gene was isolated and sequenced. This work is concerned with the nature of fiscal illusion and its effect on local government spending. Fiscal illusion is hypothesized to be a source of the "flypaper effect." The flypaper effect is an empirical phenomenon of the asymmetric effects of income and intergovernmental aid on the level of local public spending in the context of demand models of the local fisc. Lump sum aid is observed to be more stimulative on the level of public expenditures than income (Gramlich and Galper 1973). An empirical assessment of the overall effects of country of origin and product type on the structural parameters of a purchase intentions model is undertaken. First, it is theorized that (1) product involvement, (2) perceived risk, (3) psychic distance, (4) perceived product quality, and (5) national character will directly or indirectly affect purchase intentions of imported goods. These constructs form the operational framework for purchase intentions of foreign-made products, which is presented in the form of a structural equation model. The separation of the racemic and meso diastereomers of the binucleating ligand et,ph-P4 ((Et$\rm \sb2PCH\sb2CH\sb2)(Ph)PCH\sb2P(Ph)(CH\sb2CH\sb2PEt\sb2))$ was achieved. The thiocyanate nickel(II) complexes of mixed racemic- and meso-et,ph-P4 were separated based on their different solubilities in ethanol. Cyanolysis of the separated racemic and meso nickel(II) complexes allowed the recovery of the free racemic- and meso-et,ph-P4 ligands. The many species involved in this process were identified in order to obtain consistent and improved results. This dissertation develops a formal and systematic methodology for efficient mapping of several contemporary artificial neural network (ANN) models on k-ary n-cube parallel architectures (KNC's). We apply the general mapping to several important ANN models including feedforward ANN's trained with backpropagation algorithm, radial basis function networks, cascade correlation learning, and adaptive resonance theory networks. Our approach utilizes a parallel task graph representing concurrent operations of the ANN model during training. The mapping of the ANN is performed in two steps. In order to assess the potential of biological control of rice seedling disease, detailed etiological information was required, i.e. when and for how long are seedlings susceptible and which portions of the seed and seedling are susceptible. Contaminant-free seeds were required for these studies. For this purpose, rice seeds were soaked for 2 hrs in freshly prepared 2.6% sodium hypochlorite adjusted to pH 7.0 with a final concentration of 0.5 M potassium phosphate. During recent years, the Taguchi Methods of quality control have been adopted in many industries because the goal of the methods is to produce a product or process that is robust to environmental conditions and component variation. The methodology involves using statistical experimental designs to achieve this goal through analyzing a performance measure, called a signal-to-noise ratio, that takes into account both variation and target value. However, many statisticians have criticized the Taguchi Methods for the lack of use of sound statistical practices. This dissertation looks at representations of framed pure braids and compact orientable three manifolds. A representation, $\Phi:Z\sp{n}\oplus P\sb{n}\to \Gamma\sb{n},$ is constructed from the framed pure braid group on n strands to the mapping class group on a surface of genus n. The representation is used to obtain a presentation of the fundamental group. The representation, like that of (M-P), is compatible with Heegaard and Surgery descriptions. An algorithm is presented for transforming mapping class group elements to a stably equivalent pure framed braid, under the correspondence given by the representation. Properties and processes in silicon nitride and graphite are investigated using molecular-dynamics (MD) simulations. Scalable and portable multiresolution algorithms are developed and implemented on parallel architectures to simulate systems containing 10$\sp6$ atoms interacting via realistic potentials. Structural correlations, mechanical properties, and thermal transport are studied in microporous silicon nitride as a function of density. The formation of pores is observed when the density is reduced to 2.6 g/cc, and the percolation occurs at a density of 2.0 g/cc. The density variation of the thermal conductivity and the Young's modulus are well described by power laws with scaling exponents of 1.5 …

The purpose of the present research was to examine the contribution of age and individual differences to everyday problem solving, focusing on goal preference. Three pilot studies were conducted to generate interpersonal problem solving goals that were high in emotional arousal and low in emotional arousal. In the Experiment Proper, 40 young and 40 older adults were given 6 vignettes depicting everyday problems. Subjects rated their preference of both high and low experimenter-provided goals. Subjects then completed 4 individual difference questionnaires that measured stimulation intensity, affect intensity, and emotional control. Results showed that both younger and older adults endorsed more …

The historical geography of Trujillo, Honduras is told through its changing hinterlands. This dissertation uses world systems to approach and understand the historical geography of Trujillo, however, the focus is on this peripheral area of the world system, rather than on the core. The coast of the western Caribbean experiences economic boom and bust cycles. The periodization of Trujillo's historical geography is based on the city's boom and bust periods, using primary documents from archives in Central America and Spain. Trujillo's first boom period lasted from its founding in 1525 until 1550, based on gold exports from the interior. During …

This work revises earlier interpretations of antebellum American humorists and sets forth a new model for understanding their accomplishments. Rooted in historical thinking, this study integrated biography, publishing history, critical responses, and a penetrating analysis of the sketches of several major figures. The first third examined Seba Smith, Joseph C. Neal, and Augustus Baldwin Longstreet. A devotion to their communities in Maine, Philadelphia, and Georgia, respectively, and preference for writing warm, genial selections remained important shared influences while cultural differences between the societies in which each matured and wrote made their humor diverge significantly. John Smith, Roger Williams, and Thomas Morton created images of themselves to attempt to gain position in the New World colonial undertaking, and each uses techniques of specific genres to bolter those images. However, each demonstrates a different degree of self-fashioning. John Smith collects and republishes texts much like Richard Hakluyt did back in England. However, Hakluyt's collections just reproduced texts, while Smith mixed others' writings about his colonial activities with his own work, creating a hybrid text with Smith as the subject. Accurate determination of the morphology and dynamics of aerosols consisting of agglomerated sub-micron sized particulates is needed for soot formation studies, process monitoring in flame-based materials synthesis applications, and pollution control studies. The objective of the current study is to investigate the application of dynamic light scattering (DLS) to flames as an extension of current measurement technologies. Unlike previous DLS flame studies, conventional polarized DLS is supplemented with depolarized DLS measurements to account for the agglomerates' anisotropy. Surfactant based processes are emerging and becoming increasingly important in pollution control. A novel predispersed solvent extraction (PDSE) technique using surfactant based colloidal liquid aphrons (CLAs or polyaphrons) and colloidal gas aphrons (CGAs) for the removal of hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) from the aqueous phase was studied. The process involves an extraction of HOCs into CLAs, followed by a flotation using CGAs. Polyaphrons were characterized by a particle size analyzer. The size distribution was found to be bimodal. This work explores the connections between Middle English literature and transitions occurring within the English legal system. It focuses on the way Chaucer and the Gawain-poet negotiate the tension between the legal potency of the written word and the spoken word. As the common law contains an ongoing negotiation between written and unwritten forms of law, the dissertation discusses the function and significance of the tension between the lex scripta and the lex non scripta. The channel catfish industry has experienced tremendous growth over the last several years. This growth has triggered more intensive culture practices resulting in disease outbreaks and devastating mortalities. Medicated feeds and vaccination have been of limited use. The present research was aimed at comparison and distinction between various deltaic subenvironments from Pennsylvanian deposits of the Arkoma Basin, Arkansas. Detailed facies analysis of deltaic deposits reveal significant variation in sedimentary characteristics between different subenvironments. A multi-pronged approach, including documentation of measured sections and gamma ray profiles in the field and subsequent laboratory analysis of samples, was undertaken. The Atoka Formation deltaic deposits have been established primarily as representing fluvially-dominated deltas. Interdistributary bay fill deposits are splintery shales with abundant siderite nodules. Crevasse splay sandstone units are ripple cross-laminated and coarsen and thicken upward to a maximum of 60cm …

This work explores the relationships between and among women in the fiction of Toni Morrison. Morrison's mothers, sisters, and daughters cannot function without the love and support of a community of women. Those characters who abandon or reject this community become lost to their own world. Morrison women, thus, find themselves in and through other women. The first two chapters establish Morrison's characters in relation to those of other authors in order to show her unique sense of community. A 2.1 kton-yr exposure of data from the Irvine-Michigan-Brookhaven detector has yielded 72 atmospheric neutrino events with a vertex contained inside the fiducial volume and at least 0.95 GeV of visible Cerenkov energy. The ratio of muon-like events with respect to the total number of events was calculated for the data and the Monte Carlo simulation. The ratio of these two ratios $({muon-like\over total})\sb{Data}/ ({muon-like\over total})\sb{MC}$ was found to be $1.1\sbsp{-0.12}{+0.07}(stat.)\pm\ 0.11(syst.).$ The zenith angle dependence of this ratio of ratios is consistent with being flat. The region of $sin\sp2(2\theta) > 0.5$ and $\delta m\sp2\ > 9.8 \times 10\sp{-3} eV\sp2$ has been …

Two experiments examined the acute effects of passive muscle stretching on the performance of a skill (vertical jump) which takes advantage of the stretch-shortening phenomenon. Because recent work suggests that passive stretching might impede the mechanisms (elastic and myoelectrical potentiation) thought to be responsible for this phenomenon, it was hypothesized that stretching would decrease the jump height of jumps executed with a preparatory countermovement (CMJ), but not the jump height of those initiated from a static, squatting position (SJ). The reform of Mexican convents in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century generally has been shown to have been ineffective. I suggest that reform at the Observant Franciscan community of Santa Clara of Havana achieved much better results. While conventual reform in Cuba did not attain perfection, it followed the pattern of administrative, economic and military reform in that it was more effective on the island than it was elsewhere in the Spanish empire. The dissertation introduces a new class of bus-based systems called the Segmented Multiple Bus System (SMBS). One of the unique characteristics of the SMBS is that it allows the exploitation of memory reference locality even though it is a bus-based nondirect network. This comes from the architectural interconnection feature that the SMBS can be viewed as a large-scale multiple bus system (MBS) that has been partitioned into smaller partitions called segments. In dipping, water-drive reservoirs, substantial incremental oil can be produced using gravity-assisted gas injection improved recovery processes. These processes include the Double Displacement Process (DDP) and the Second-Contact Water Displacement (SCWD). The efficiency of these processes depends, in part, on phase distribution in the pore space after gas injection which in turn depends on interfacial and surface tensions (IFT) of the phases involved. Christian Heroism And Holy War In Anglo-Saxon England., Kent Gregory Hare

This dissertation examines the character and development of a Christian heroic ideal in Anglo-Saxon England between the seventh and eleventh centuries and its manifestation through notions of holy war. It provides a valuable case study of the ongoing synthesis which occurred when the Germanic peoples converted to Christianity. The mutual transformation wrought in the traditional Germanic warrior ethos and Christian faith and values permeates the literary sources for Anglo-Saxon history, from the early hagiographies and Bede's Ecclesiastical History, through later histories and chronicles, to the unique corpus of Old English poetry.
