Franz Liszt's Transcription Of Johann Sebastian Bach's Prelude And Fugue In A Minor (Bwv 543)., Tingwen Tina Shao

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Franz Liszt's piano transcription of Johann Sebastian Bach's Prelude and Fugue in A Minor for organ (BWV 543) is the primary focus of this study. Liszt was a great admirer of Bach's works; therefore, his transcription is very true to the original, changes being made only to make the organ work more playable on the piano. Chapter One sketches the important roles of both composers in keyboard literature. Chapter Two includes information on Bach as an organist and transcriber during the Weimar (1708-1717) and Leipzig (1723-1750) periods. Chapter Three focuses on Liszt as an organist and his personal ideas for …

The Organ Symphony: Its Evolution In France And Transformation In Selected Works By American Composers Of The Twentieth Century., Richard Edward Beckford Jan 1997

The Organ Symphony: Its Evolution In France And Transformation In Selected Works By American Composers Of The Twentieth Century., Richard Edward Beckford

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

During the mid to late nineteenth century organ building and organ music in France underwent radical change. The French organ of the early nineteenth century was still the instrument of the French Classical school, the instrument of Clicquot and his predecessors. These instruments were limited in manual and pedal compass, variety and power of stops, and in their ability to vary expression and nuance. The great organ builder Aristide Cavaille-Coll changed all this and introduced to France instruments that were capable of tremendous tonal variety, nuance, and expressions. His instruments introduced many tonal changes particularly harmonic stops and stops that …

Analysis And Interpretation: Musical Analysis As A Technique For Performance Decisions In Selected Preludes By Claude Debussy., William Timothy O'Steen Jan 1997

Analysis And Interpretation: Musical Analysis As A Technique For Performance Decisions In Selected Preludes By Claude Debussy., William Timothy O'Steen

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Thorough analysis will serve the performer as a valuable tool for making effective performance decisions. This study follows two guidelines: (1) analysis must include the examination of all elements of musical structure and (2) the performer must view the music from as many perspectives as possible, for example, as listener and analyst, as well as performer. In serving the second of these two guidelines, the study examines performance tradition as it pertains to Debussy's piano music, including historical performances of his contemporaries as well as Debussy's own recorded performances. A larger part of the study analyzes the structure of "Des …

An Examination Of Two Contemporary Techniques In Five Works For Solo Bassoon: Descriptions And Performance Suggestions., Steve Vacchi Jan 1997

An Examination Of Two Contemporary Techniques In Five Works For Solo Bassoon: Descriptions And Performance Suggestions., Steve Vacchi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Much of the literature for solo bassoon of the past few decades is partially dependent upon the player's ability to use contemporary techniques. While it is atypical for an entire composition to rely on such devices, a significant volume of recent solo literature may be unplayable to those who have not mastered them. My aim is to help solo bassoonists in perfecting two specific contemporary techniques: fluttertongue and singing while playing. Though quite standard for other woodwind instruments such as the flute, these techniques have not been adequately described for bassoonists. The repertoire chosen for this project represents works for …

A Study Of Ralph Vaughan Williams's "An Oxford Elegy" And "Epithalamion"., Robert Joseph Taylor Jan 1997

A Study Of Ralph Vaughan Williams's "An Oxford Elegy" And "Epithalamion"., Robert Joseph Taylor

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Choral music occupies a central place in the compositional output of Ralph Vaughan Williams. Some pieces, such as the Sea Symphony (1909), Five Mystical Songs (1911), Mass in G minor (1922), and Serenade to Music (1938), have become standards in the choral repertoire. Others, such as Sancta Civitas (1925), Dona Nobis Pacem (1936) and Hodie (1954), may be less familiar, but have still received considerable critical acclaim. A few pieces remain relatively unknown even to choral conductors. Two choral works, Epithalamion (1957) and An Oxford Elegy (1949), fall into this latter category. This monograph is the first detailed study of …
