"Punctuality Is The Thief Of Time": The Earnest Pursuit Of Social Media In The Library, Elyse L. Profera, Maria Atilano

Maria Atilano

The way social media tools are selected and used in the library changes regularly in an evolving digital and social climate. The opportunities social media presents to the library community includes, but is not restricted to, user engagement, professional networking, informational exchange, and increasing the discoverability of existing online resources at the library. Taylor & Francis recently released its white paper entitled “Use of Social Media by the Library: Current Practices and Future Opportunities.” The white paper has been researched and compiled by Taylor & Francis to provide an overview of current practices relating to the use of social media …

Maria Atilano

Libraries are under pressure to demonstrate their value within their constantly evolving educational institutions or in their communities. The presenters will propose skills to strengthen library relevance that are applicable to all libraries: STOP – Evaluate where you are. Assess your current practices and determine areas for improvement. COLLABORATE - Identify opportunities for partnerships with organizations or groups whose goals align with yours. LISTEN - Garner feedback from users via social media and other platforms such as surveys and user interactions.

Taking Face-To-Face Library Workshops For Freshman Online, Anne Grant, Diana Finkle Nov 2015

Taking Face-To-Face Library Workshops For Freshman Online, Anne Grant, Diana Finkle

Anne Grant

As the needs of academic library users evolve, so must the ways that librarians chose to interact with those users. A great deal of energy has been spent focusing on the first-year student in the university setting, but is this the best focal point for instructional efforts? After an extensive brainstorming session, the librarians at Clemson University decided to refocus time and energy from the first-year students to upper-class students and faculty. That’s not to say that this very important group of students was ignored, but the face-to-face sessions that had been provided to incoming students was shifted to online …

Collaborate To Innovate: Expanding Access To Faculty Patents Through The Institutional Repository And The Library Catalog, Andrew Wesolek, Jan Comfort, Lisa Bodenheimer

Jan Comfort

Institutional repositories and library catalogs have long been used to promote and provide access to scholarly articles, monographs, and other “traditional” forms of scholarship. However, faculty at many institutions participate in “non-traditional” forms of research, such as patents. This work explores the use of Clemson University’s institutional repository and library catalog in promoting and providing access to the patents granted to its inventors. More specifically, the authors outline the project from generating metadata for patents, and cross-walking it into a form that can be batch uploaded to a bepress Digital Commons Repository. They then explore the process of harvesting the …

Open-Access Policies: Basics And Impact On Content Recruitment, Andrew Wesolek, Paul Royster Nov 2015

Open-Access Policies: Basics And Impact On Content Recruitment, Andrew Wesolek, Paul Royster

Andrew Wesolek

The allure of passing an institutional open-access (OA) policy as a strategy to populate an institutional repository is clear. After all, educating faculty to retain their rights to their scholarly publications through passage of such a policy, then requiring them to make those publications available through an IR seems a sure path to success. However, this approach of “if you pass it, they will comply” rings eerily similar to the early and decidedly misplaced optimism of populating institutional repositories through a “build it and they will come” proposition (Salo, 2007). The Registry of Open Access Repositories Mandatory Archiving Policies (ROARMAP) …

Assessing The Shared Usage Of Collaboratively Acquired Ebooks Within The Borrow Direct Network, Adriana Popescu, Douglas Mcgee Nov 2015

Assessing The Shared Usage Of Collaboratively Acquired Ebooks Within The Borrow Direct Network, Adriana Popescu, Douglas Mcgee

Douglas McGee

Established in 1999, Borrow Direct (BD) is a partnership of nine independent U.S. universities and the Center for Research Libraries providing expedited delivery of print materials. As such, it has facilitated the delivery of nearly two million items to patrons at these institutions. The rapid emergence of e-books has posed a challenge to this successful resource sharing venture as member institutions have expanded their acquisition of this type of content. How does one “borrow” an ebook from another institution and avoid the need to purchase one’s own copy? Different models are emerging to tackle this issue. Under the aegis of …

Effect Of Retiring Custom Web Applications On Business And Information Technology Alignment, Shubhashree Thekahally

Shubhashree Thekahally 7340504

Web applications provide the information technology (IT) implementation of business and align IT with business. Retirement of IT applications should ensure stability of business and IT alignment. The current study investigated the alignment gaps created between business and IT resulting from retiring IT software applications. The purpose of this study was to identify IT integration points with business and provide a process-based solution that sustained IT alignment with business after retiring IT applications. The theoretical framework strategic alignment model aided in identifying 3 IT domains as the IT integration points with business: enterprise architecture, configuration management database, and service-level agreement. …

The Importance Of Outreach In Shared Print Projects, Teri Koch, Heather Weltin, Rick Lugg, Doug Way Nov 2015

The Importance Of Outreach In Shared Print Projects, Teri Koch, Heather Weltin, Rick Lugg, Doug Way

Doug Way

Shared print projects can often be seen from the library perspective as a win-win proposition. They allow libraries to free up limited space for new uses or growing collections, while ensuring continued access to print content for users. Unfortunately, faculty and other stakeholders sometimes see the removal of materials from libraries very differently. In this session we will explore concerns often raised by campus constituencies related to shared print projects. We will also present two case studies that examine how a large research university participating in multiple journal-based shared print projects and a mid-sized private university participating in a monograph-based …

Saying Sayonara To The Stl: Strategy, Scale And Systematic Abandonment In The Ebook Marketplace, Doug Way Nov 2015

Saying Sayonara To The Stl: Strategy, Scale And Systematic Abandonment In The Ebook Marketplace, Doug Way

Doug Way

In 2014 the University of Wisconsin-Madison initiated a review of its ebook collection development program. This project led to the development of a concise ebook strategy that was designed to guide decision-making and practices surrounding the acquisition of ebooks. It also led to the end of the Libraries’ short-term loan (STL)-based demand driven acquisitions (DDA) program. This ebook acquisition program, which had been in place for nearly four years, was heavily used, well managed, consistently on budget and, in many ways, working precisely as expected, yet the decision to eliminate this program was fairly straightforward. This session will explore the …

Beyond Google Analytics: Using The ‘Toolkit For The Impact Of Digitised Scholarly Resources’ To Embed Metrics And Gauge Use Of Regional Digital Collections, Virginia A. Dressler, Elizabeth Richardson

Virginia A Dressler

Recently, Kent State University Libraries has been expanding digital collections, in particular highlighting content from the regional library collections. As the digital collections continue to grow, our team wanted to find a way to apply defined metrics to ascertain the use of digital resources through qualitative and quantitative methods, in a more extensive and comprehensive method than Google Analytics. This paper will present the construction of metrics to analyze the use (and reuse) of the digital collections with a number of open-source tools.

Tweet With Them, Not At Them: Social Media Listening As A Form Of Student Engagement, Maria Atilano Oct 2015

Tweet With Them, Not At Them: Social Media Listening As A Form Of Student Engagement, Maria Atilano

Maria Atilano

Social media and networking tools such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram are often used by groups to communicate information to their constituents. Over the past two years, UNF’s Thomas G. Carpenter Library has used its social media accounts not only to communicate, but also to listen. By monitoring keywords, hashtags, and geotags, the Library has kept tabs on what has been said about our services, resources, spaces, staff, and more. The act of listening has also allowed us to begin conversations with our audience, specifically students, in a fun and engaging way. This presentation will share the variety of exchanges …

Growing Pains-From Standard Bibliography To Dynamic Web-Accessible Resource, Creating A Repository Of Popular And Scientific Writing On Roses Using Tei., Julia R. Tryon Oct 2015

Growing Pains-From Standard Bibliography To Dynamic Web-Accessible Resource, Creating A Repository Of Popular And Scientific Writing On Roses Using Tei., Julia R. Tryon

Julia R Tryon

Twenty years ago, I started a project that I envisioned would culminate in a printed bibliography of writings on the Rose in English that would be as complete as possible—both books and articles. A bibliography on roses had been published in 1973 which focused on books and in 1984 there was a self-published title from the U.K. citing books and“significant” journal articles but which did not include the voluminous amount of articles in popular journals and newspapers. My goal was to update and expand upon what had been compiled by the earlier bibliographers. Two decades later, I have returned to …

Digital Storytelling In The Library: Supporting The Multimodal Assignment From Start To Finish, Elizabeth Andrejasich Gibes, Robert L. Nunez Ii

Elizabeth Andrejasich Gibes

This poster explores the security, privacy and ethical considerations confronted in supporting digital media courses. Of particular importance to this presentation is the increased role digital storytelling and video composition plays in student learning. Supporting this shift in curriculum, librarians have the opportunity to facilitate an intelligent and integrated move toward the use of these digital tools in classrooms and participate in educating students on media literacy. Librarians supporting the Digital Media Studio at Marquette University share their techniques in educating students on intellectual property issues and in navigating security and privacy problems with shared equipment.

Digital Wayfinding: A User Study, M Ryan Hess Oct 2015

Digital Wayfinding: A User Study, M Ryan Hess

M Ryan Hess

The DePaul University Richardson Library conducted a study of an interactive, touch-based wayfinding screen in order to determine 1) what specific content needs users desire in digital wayfinding services and 2) are user content needs so broad, a more full-feature experience with access to all library web content would be preferred. The three-phase study included analysis of click analytics data, observations of user interactions and questionnaires targeting user experiences and expectations. The study builds on research at other libraries around point-of-need wayfinding signage and usability of digital information. Phase 1 involved capturing anonymous click analytics of user interactions, over a …

Who Is That And What Do They Do? : Showing Connections Between External Services And Your Institutional Repository, Daniel C. Draper, Suzi White

Daniel Draper

Since the implementation of DigiTool for the Digital Collections of Colorado in 2007, the landscape of services available to academic institutional repositories has changed significantly. A recent migration to DSpace precipitated an assessment of the increased number of services available to support open scholarly information sharing. What's the difference between VIVO and Altmetric? How are Figshare and Globus services similar? This poster defines core functionality of many of these services and how they relate to DSpace. It also categorizes them into four key areas: alternative research metrics, data storage and delivery, faculty and institutional reporting, and digital preservation. The overview …
