Modeling Temporal Variations In Travel Demand For Intelligent Transportation Systems, Srinivas Subrahmanyam Pulugurtha

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The imbalance between demand and supply on transportation networks, especially during peak periods, leads to significant level of congestion. Potential solutions to alleviate congestion problems include enhancing system capacity and effective utilization of available capacity--i.e., traffic demand management. Intelligent transportation system (ITS) initiatives such as travel demand management systems (TDMS) and traveler information systems (TIS) refer to demand management as an objective. The success of these initiatives rely heavily on an ability to accurately estimate the temporal variations in travel demand in near real-time. The focus of this dissertation is on developing a methodology for estimating temporal variations in travel …

The Institutional Control Of Ncaa Division One Collegiate Athletics, Burton Larry Easley Jan 1997

The Institutional Control Of Ncaa Division One Collegiate Athletics, Burton Larry Easley

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The control of collegiate athletics has been a matter of concern since the earliest days of college sports competition. In 1952, the National Collegiate Athletic Association instituted policies that included the ability to impose sanctions on colleges that violated recruiting guidelines, eligibility requirements, and other rules. Its lack of investigative and policing resources, however, left the NCAA with limited ability to enforce these policies. As a result, the organization placed the responsibility for control of institutional athletics on the school itself and its chief executive officer based on the reasoning that many problems involving violations of regulations would be solved …

Exercising Authority: A Critical History Of Exercise Messages In Popular Magazines, 1925-1968, Dahn Edward Shaulis

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to analyze exercise messages in American popular magazines. A critical perspective and historical sociological methods were used to examine more than 500 magazine articles published from 1925 to 1968. A common factor in many articles was the use of ideology mixes. Magazines used biomedicalization, materialism, nationalism, and patriarchy in several combinations to authorize restrictive exercise norms. Exercise norms were stratified by age, class, gender, and race, but changing ideology mixes and exercise norms often reflected changes in society. Biomedicalization authorized doctors as gatekeepers. It prescribed moderate activity for affluent men, but discouraged vigorous exercise …

On Numerical Inversion Of The Moment Generating Function, Andy M Tsang Jan 1997

On Numerical Inversion Of The Moment Generating Function, Andy M Tsang

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The main purpose of this thesis is to apply an algorithm for the numerical inversion of the Laplace transform that recovers the probability density function (PDF) of a sum of nonnegative continuous random variables. The Laplace transform is used in many disciplines. For example, in actuarial sciences, a common application is to study the distribution of the sum of nonnegative independent random variables. Because it is a popular method, numerical techniques have been developed to invert the Laplace transform. In the discrete case, by using a moment generating function (MGF) of a sum of independent discrete variables, the distribution can …

A Comparison Of Roasting Pit Complexes In Southern Nevada, Connie Langford Vonsleichter Jan 1997

A Comparison Of Roasting Pit Complexes In Southern Nevada, Connie Langford Vonsleichter

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Roasting pits in southern Nevada are commonly thought to have functioned to process agave. This assumption is based on the presence of agave quids, the proximity of roasting pits to agave stands, and on ethnographic accounts of agave roasting. Soil samples from two roasting pit complexes confirm this contention, and suggest a secondary use of the features to singe spines off cacti. These conclusions are supported by research on Arizona Strip and Hohokam roasting pits.

Reaction As Image: Comic Books And American Life, 1940-1955, William S. Bush

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The comic book became a mass medium during a series of defining moments in twentieth-century American history. By telling and retelling narratives of individual achievement during the Great Depression, and tales of patriotism during World War II, comic books gained a popular audience rivaling that of agenda-setting national periodicals such as Life or The Saturday Evening Post. In the first postwar decade, however, publishers experimented with themes of crime, horror, teen romance, and social satire in ways that provoked a wave of public hostility. Crusading psychiatrists, politicians, civic groups, and religious leaders led a campaign against the industry that revealed …

Yield Management And Its Practical Application In Hotels, Jeffrey M. Caneen Jan 1997

Yield Management And Its Practical Application In Hotels, Jeffrey M. Caneen

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Yield management is an approach to pricing that is often used by industries in which the marginal production cost is relatively high, while the marginal sales cost is relatively low. The hotel industry meets this criterion. Industry publications demonstrate a keen interest in the revenue enhancing potential of yield management, but there has been little research on the extent to which this pricing technique is actually utilized by hotel general managers; This research tests the proposition that there are eight basic elements of yield management in hotels. The degree to which yield management is practiced is indicated by the extent …
