Reaction As Image: Comic Books And American Life, 1940-1955, William S. Bush

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The comic book became a mass medium during a series of defining moments in twentieth-century American history. By telling and retelling narratives of individual achievement during the Great Depression, and tales of patriotism during World War II, comic books gained a popular audience rivaling that of agenda-setting national periodicals such as Life or The Saturday Evening Post. In the first postwar decade, however, publishers experimented with themes of crime, horror, teen romance, and social satire in ways that provoked a wave of public hostility. Crusading psychiatrists, politicians, civic groups, and religious leaders led a campaign against the industry that revealed …

Defying The Odds: The Christian Coalition In The Life Cycle Of The Religious Right, Kathleen S Espin

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

According to the established theories on the life cycle of social movements, the Maintenance Stage of a movement is a critical time that marks a crossroads. One path leads to victory and the other to oblivion. The odds are strongly against victory for any social movement because the bureaucratic necessities for long-term maintenance of a movement siphon off spontaneity, excitement, and "esprit de corps." Few social movements are totally successful and many are absorbed or cooped by established institutions. This study examines how the Religious Right, under the leadership of the Christian Coalition, has defied the odds and has become …

Results of the t-test indicated no significant difference in the QoL scores between pet owners and non-pet owners (p =.232). Yet on a qualitative level, pet owners (90.3%), felt that their pet did …

Walter Macken: Life In Literature, Megan Lyn Denio Jan 1997

Walter Macken: Life In Literature, Megan Lyn Denio

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Walter Macken: Life in Literature introduces Walter Macken, a Galwegian novelist, playwright, short-story writer, and children's novelist, to an American audience in order to make his works better known. The themes in Macken's novels show common elements among Irish authors. The use of the common man and the use of Ireland's history are most prevalent in Irish literature. However, Macken's use of autobiographical elements in the midst of his presentation of life in the West of Ireland, in many ways, sets him apart from the other Irish authors. Few have chronicled the lives of the farmers and the fishermen in …

Predictors Of Life Satisfaction Of Persons With Mental Retardation, Colleen Sisley Firth

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Data from a study conducted by the State of Nevada to assess consumer satisfaction with services of persons with mental retardation were factor analyzed. Data collected using ACD's Outcome Performance Measures for People with Disabilities were used. It was attempted to replicate ACD's obtained factor structure. It was then explored which groups of these variables best predicted the life satisfaction of these individuals; Results indicated that ACD's factor structure was replicable with a sample of persons with mental retardation. This may suggest that variables important to a person's quality of life may be similar for people with different disabilities. Results …
