Game Theory And Power Politics, Michael Decker Sep 1966

Game Theory And Power Politics, Michael Decker

Masters Theses

Preface

The contemporary argument over method reaches into all the traditional diversions of social science, of which political science is no exception. Such names as structure-functionalism, decision theory, systems analysis, behavioralism, and game theory have become commonplace identifications of political methodologies in the twentieth century. And if one consideration has generated this plethora of seemingly novel approaches to the study of politics, it is an epistemological one. Indeed, the argument seems to center around determining that kind of intellectual behavior which will best enable the student to understand political events.

It is proposed in what follows that, in the …

Performance Of Diffeent Breed Types Of Ewes, Ram D. Singh Aug 1966

Performance Of Diffeent Breed Types Of Ewes, Ram D. Singh

Masters Theses

The production of milk-fat spring lambs is the predominant system of commercial sheep production in Tennessee. These lambs are produced primarily by mating native, western crossbred, or fine-wool grade ewes to purebred rams of the mutton breeds, including Hampshire, Southdown and Suffolk. Most producers of spring lambs prefer to sell their ewe Iambs and to buy replacement ewes from western sources rather than produce home-raised replacements. One of the major problems confronting spring lamb producers in this area is a source of productive ewes. The breeding of replacement ewes has considerable economic significance to the producer for greater and more …

Studies On The Preparation Of Tetrasubstituted Hydrazones, William Kao Aug 1966

Studies On The Preparation Of Tetrasubstituted Hydrazones, William Kao

Masters Theses

Introduction

In a recent study of the ultraviolet spectra of substituted hydrazones, it was concluded that a sterio effect existed in tetrasubstituted hydrazones that significantly hindered complete rotation about the nitrogen-nitrogen bond. Weber16 noted that di- and tri-substituted hydrazones exhibited similar spectra with three strong absorption bands at approximately 235, 300, and 340 mu. In acid solutions, the spectra of these compounds showed a marked decrease in intensity of the long wavelength band. It has been postulated that this change was a consequence of the protonation of the non-bonding electron-pair on the amino nitrogen atom, and thus correlated the …

An Examination Of The Attitudes Of Students In Clinical Training Toward Concepts Judged Important To The Therapeutic Process, David B. Ingram Aug 1966

An Examination Of The Attitudes Of Students In Clinical Training Toward Concepts Judged Important To The Therapeutic Process, David B. Ingram

Masters Theses

The Background and Purpose of the Study

Introduction

This study is generally concerned with an evaluation of the proficiencies of speech therapists in training. The importance of this area, while obvious, has received little formal recognition in the field of speech pathology. That this topic has not been the concern of more research may be understood when we consider a contemporary and authoritative definition of the word 'therapy'. Colby (5, p. 95) states that therapy is: "...a practical art, a craft like agriculture, or medicine or wine making in which an artisan relies on an incomplete, fragmentary of knowledge and …

Masters Theses

The Challenge of the 60's

The city of the 1960's us awakening to its present condition and is attempting to take positive steps towards the alleviation or the solution of a multitude of problems. Typical of the problems is the erosion of the local tax base, a loss of population, an increase in crime and delinquency, and persistent demands by fringe area residents for extensions of municipal services. A problem that affects cities of all sizes is that of blight, deterioration, and decay. One method of dealing with this problem is through local participation in the Federally-sponsored urban renewal program. …

Identification Of Long-Tenure Hourly Factory Workers Using A Weighted Application Blank, Joffrey Michael Dornon Aug 1966

Identification Of Long-Tenure Hourly Factory Workers Using A Weighted Application Blank, Joffrey Michael Dornon

Masters Theses

A cursory examination of employment application blanks, so commonly used in modern business, reveals that two kinds of data are normally requested of a job applicant. The first kind of data are items necessary for the identification of the prospective employee: name, age, sex, address, and so on to the extent permissible and required by existing law and customary personnel administration procedures.

The use of the second kind of data contained in application blanks is seldom explicitly stated but is assumed to be of greater importance for personnel selection decisions. Information regarding previous job history, hobbies, and related activities and …

The Application Of The Verwey-Overbeek Theory To The Relative Sediment Volume Of Kaolin-Water Dispersions, James E. Kline

Masters Theses

Introduction

This paper describes an investigation intended to: 1. observe the effect of electrolyte concentration on the stability of kaolin-water systems, 2. evaluate the relative sediment volume measurement as a tool for determining the stability of such systems, 3. assess the applicability of the Verwey-Overbeek theory of stability of lyophobic colloids for predicting the observed effects, and 4. determine if any correlation exists between the effects predicted by the theory and observed through the relative sediment volume measurement.

The relative sediment volume measurement will be shown to be dependent upon the efficiency of packing of the pigment particles, which in …

Foreign University Students’ Image Of The United States Of America, Austra P. Balks Aug 1966

Foreign University Students’ Image Of The United States Of America, Austra P. Balks

Masters Theses

Observations

As a foreign-born student this writer has been exposed to differing views about the United States of America, particularly with respect to its ideological background and some facets to its culture. Many of these views have not corresponded with facts observed about life in the United States, as revealed to the writer after she had resided in this country for a time. Among fellow immigrants, this writer stated that the longer one lived in the United States one's attitude became more understanding and positive toward the United States.

The writer had observed earlier that in many respects the basic …

Dimethyl Sulfoxide Oxidation Of Primary Alcohols, Carmen Vargas Zenarosa Aug 1966

Dimethyl Sulfoxide Oxidation Of Primary Alcohols, Carmen Vargas Zenarosa

Masters Theses

Historical

A method of selective oxidation of primary and secondary alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes and ketones has been developed recently, namely the use of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as the oxidizing agent, either alone or with dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC)14, acid anhydrides1, or alkyl chloroformates10. The negatively polarized oxygen atom of the sulfoxide group in DMSO is ideally situated for a transfer to many electron-deficient substrates. The oxygen of the alcohol coordinates with the sulfur atom of DMSO through its oxygen atom; this is followed by β-elemination of dimethyl sulfide, thereby resulting in oxidation of the …

Glucose Absorption, Carbohydrase Activities, And Carbohydrate Hydrolysis And Uptake In The Intestinal Tract Of Mature Sheep, Foster Glen Hembry Aug 1966

Glucose Absorption, Carbohydrase Activities, And Carbohydrate Hydrolysis And Uptake In The Intestinal Tract Of Mature Sheep, Foster Glen Hembry

Masters Theses

Carbohydrates are the predominant source of energy used to carry out the biological processes of growth, maintenance, and reproduction in the animal body. Glucose is the most important carbohydrate metabolite in both the nonruminant and the ruminant animal. In the non ruminant, glucose is also the most abundant end product of carbohydrate digestion.

The nonruminant is able to utilize only traces of cellulose and hemicellulose as end products of microbial degradation in the large intestine, and the small intestine of this animal is the major site of carbohydrate assimilation. The microbiological digestion of carbohydrates makes the reticulo-nimen and to a …

The Economics Of Forage And Concentrate Rations For East Tennessee Grade A Herds With High Production Records, Roger Stanley Lyon Aug 1966

The Economics Of Forage And Concentrate Rations For East Tennessee Grade A Herds With High Production Records, Roger Stanley Lyon

Masters Theses

The grade A milk industry has steadily developed into one of the major agricultural industries in Tennessee today. The volume of Grade A milk sold under Federal order increased 51 per cent between 1956 and 1963. Yet, along with this increase in milk production, the number of grade A milk producers has declined. The decline in the number of pro-ducers is due to the advancement of technology in dairying which has caused greater milk production per cow, larger herd sizes and a tremen-dous increase in capital investment, These factors have forced many small producers out of production. For years dairy …

Dairying is of major importance in Tennessee. The sale of dairy products was the third most important source of cash receipts from farm marketings in 1963 ( 17: 22). * The gross farm income from dairy products in 1963 was over 93 million dollars. This income was derived from 476, 000 dairy cows on Tennessee farms. Average milk production per Tennessee cow that year was 4, 7 10 pounds as compared to the national average milk production per cow of 7, 545 pounds. Tennessee research indicates that milk production per cow of 6, 000 pounds or more is necessary for …

An Investigation Of The Use Of The Semantic Differential For Assessing Reactions To Stuttering Behavior, Douglas J. Spurlock Aug 1966

An Investigation Of The Use Of The Semantic Differential For Assessing Reactions To Stuttering Behavior, Douglas J. Spurlock

Masters Theses

Introduction

The professional literature in the field of speech pathology contains a great many references to stuttering. A large part of this literature on stuttering has dealt with the problem of severity. The importance of the concept severity of stuttering can be viewed in its relation to the broad theoretical constructs in the field of stuttering. Severity is a way of quantifying the extent of abnormality or degree of interference with the normal speech process. To say that one stutter is more severe than another is to say that he appears to be more abnormal than the other. Severity of …

Sir Frederick Lugard, World War I And The Amalgamation Of Nigeria 1914-1919, John F. Riddick Aug 1966

Sir Frederick Lugard, World War I And The Amalgamation Of Nigeria 1914-1919, John F. Riddick

Masters Theses

Introduction

Throughout the First World War, world attention focused mainly on Europe's Western Front. There, the human carnage, the destruction, and the ruin created grave pressures which spread throughout the world. Though remote and detached, the continent of Africa encountered these powerful forces. In Nigeria, the focal point of this study, the conflagration impeded the colony's administrative development while it spurred its economic growth. Nor did it escape the blood bath, for Nigerian forces fought in both East and West Africa. Before the outbreak of the war, the British government had made the decision to give Nigeria a centralized colonial …

An Investigation Of The Surface Temperature Distribution In The Detroit Region, Allen R. Smith Aug 1966

An Investigation Of The Surface Temperature Distribution In The Detroit Region, Allen R. Smith

Masters Theses

Chapter I

Introduction

Climate and the City

Studies made of temperature in and around cities have shown the climate of the city to be anomalous in relation to its regional climate. The extent of this anomalous condition and the reasons for its occurrence vary from city to city and from season to season. So many variable factors are present in the generation or regeneration of heat within the city that no study has yet satisfactorily explained the total factors involved, or has indicated the percentage for which any one factor might be responsible. This being the case, the only objective …

The Effects Of Estrogenic And Gonadotrophic Hormones On Normal Levels Of Some Blood Chemical Constituents In The Non-Breeding Female Mallard Duck, Wendell F. Hofman

Masters Theses

Introduction

In past years, a substantial amount of research has centered on the levels of certain blood chemical constituents in birds, particularly in chickens and pigeons. However, little has been recorded concerning the blood chemical constituents of the mallard duck, Anas platyrhynshos. Likewise, the effects of hormones on its blood chemistry, in conjunction with its reproductive system, have been almost totally unexplored. Therefore, this study, conducted from October 14, 1965, to March 3, 1966, had as its purpose the determination of normal quantitative levels of certain blood chemical constituents (the electrolytes--calcium, sodium, potassium; the proteins--albumin and globulin; and lipids) and …
