VIMS Articles
Global environmental abundance of microplastics (MPs) is increasing. MPs may sorb hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs), accumulate in and cause deleterious effects on exposed organisms. This study investigated and compared the accumulation and effects of MPs and MP-associated PCB in the two indigenous aquatic organisms in Viet Nam, the white hard clams, Meretrix lyrata, and the giant river prawns, Macrobrachium rosenbergii. The test organisms were exposed to either polyethylene microbeads (PEMBs), waterborne polychlorinated biphenyl 153 (PCB-153), or PEMB-associated PCB-153 (PEMB-PCB) over 28 days. Organismal MP accumulation, survival, and weight gain were examined at various sampling intervals. In general, MP …

Red Stone, Invisible Legacy: Goan Aesthetics In Charles Correa's Design, Vishvesh Prabhakar Kandolkar, R. Benedito Ferrão
Arts & Sciences Articles
Excerpt from publication: "The obituary for Charles Correa (1930-2015) in the New York Times hails him as an ''American trained" architect, who reached "deep into India's past for inspiration in producing work that is notable for its imagination and breadth."1 Of course, Correa's design practice drew from "Indian" traditions, including the use of the mandala, a sacred geometric configuration associated with Buddhism. The visibility of mandalas in the architect's designs questions the alignment of his legacy with an Indianness that can only be understood as heralding a mythic Hindu past..."
Moving Forward In The Wake Of The Pandemic: Shifting From Schools Acting Alone To Engaged Partnerships With Families And Communities, Sheri S. Williams
Moving Forward In The Wake Of The Pandemic: Shifting From Schools Acting Alone To Engaged Partnerships With Families And Communities, Sheri S. Williams
The William & Mary Educational Review
Workplace shortages are a top concern for schools in times of calm and even more troubling in times of stress. Burnout is especially widespread in stressful situations of disrupted learning, trauma, and discord (e.g., Diliberti & Schwartz, 2022; Thomas et al., 2019). In the wake of the pandemic, educators struggled to deal with the stressors on their own (IES, 2022). It became clear that schools could no longer work in isolation. Moving forward in the wake of the pandemic required an intentional shift in purpose from isolated classrooms to interconnected partnerships with families and communities. In the path to recovery, …
Engaging Latinx Students: A Path To Life-Long Learning, Paola Mendizabal
Engaging Latinx Students: A Path To Life-Long Learning, Paola Mendizabal
The William & Mary Educational Review
Although the Latino ethnic group is the largest minority and the fastest growing subgroup in the United States, they are one of the most underserved groups in public schools. This is due to many systemic issues; however, this paper focuses on student engagement. Increasing student engagement decreases student dropout rates. If we can foster high levels of engagement with Latinx students in K-12, they are more likely to graduate high school possibly with aspirations to further their education. This conceptual paper aims to answer the following questions: What factors inhibit and/or contribute to Latinx students' engagement? How do we engage …
Applying Street-Level Bureaucracy Theory To Understand The Barriers To The Implementation Of Restorative Justice In Public School Organizations, Eric J. Reed
The William & Mary Educational Review
This systematic review identifies the barriers to implementing restorative justice programs in public school organizations. Due to the novelty of restorative justice in schools, barriers often hamper the implementation process. Thus, it was necessary to identify barriers and how they can be mitigated. The PRISMA tool was utilized to examine 17 studies. The review harnessed Lipsky’s (1980) street-level bureaucracy framework to understand the roles of street-level bureaucrats in the education bureaucracy and to understand how the barriers align with the variables that comprise the framework. The results indicated that several barriers existed which include resources, bureaucratic discretion, and role ambiguity.
Development And Validation Of The Sense Of Belonging Among Counselor Education Students Survey (Sobaces)., Allison Fears
Development And Validation Of The Sense Of Belonging Among Counselor Education Students Survey (Sobaces)., Allison Fears
The William & Mary Educational Review
Sense of belonging among students has been studied extensively (Gopalan & Brady, 2020), and has been shown to be a predictor of success, engagement, and well-being in college students. While studies have investigated a sense of belonging amongst specific marginalized groups within a university (e.g. Duran et al., 2020; Lewis et al., 2021; Sims et al., 2020) there have been few studies that examine a sense of belonging among master students in counselor education programs. This paper will outline the development and validation of a new instrument, Sense of Belonging among Counselor Education Students (SOBACES).

School of Education Articles
What does liberation look like in leadership learning and education? This article offers examples for (re)imagining leadership education in program design, coordination, and assessment by centering the leadership for liberation framework and other liberatory approaches. The authors offer examples of how these frameworks serve as an entry point for college student liberatory leadership learning.
Dietary Shifts And The Need For Increased Sustainability Approaches In The Global Aquaculture Seafood System, Darien D. Mizuta
Dietary Shifts And The Need For Increased Sustainability Approaches In The Global Aquaculture Seafood System, Darien D. Mizuta
VIMS Articles
Recent shifts in the global dietary preferences have indicated the fast-growing choice for plant-based, or meat-reduced diets. Among the motivations for such choices, which are increasingly advocated by nations and environmental institutions, is the major concern with global environmental sustainability and impacts of food production systems. Incontestably, the animal food source industry is extremely diverse, and seafood production through the aquaculture value chain remains unfamiliar to key stakeholders possibly leading to an uncomprehensive view and often biased perception of the farming industry within the environmental context. Accordingly, I discuss the importance of seafood production systems, such as the fastest seafood …

Estimating Relative Abundance Of Young‐Of‐Year American Eel, Anguilla Rostrata, In The Virginia Tributaries Of Chesapeake Bay (Spring 2023), Troy D. Tuckey, Daniel Royster, Mary C. Fabrizio
Reports
American Eel (Anguilla rostrata) is a valuable commercial species along the Atlantic coast of North America from New Brunswick to Florida. American Eel is also important to the recreational fishery as it is often used live as bait for Striped Bass (Morone saxatilis) and Cobia (Rachycentron canadum). In 2021, 87% of the U.S coastwide commercial landings came from Maryland, the Potomac River, and Virginia (personal communication from the National Marine Fisheries Service, Fisheries Statistics Division). Since the 1980s, harvest along the U.S. Atlantic Coast has declined, with similar patterns occurring in the Canadian Maritime Provinces (Meister and Flagg 1997). The …

The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a state-of-the-art facility for studying the strong force, is expected to begin commissioning its first experiments in 2028. This is an opportune time for artificial intelligence (AI) to be included from the start at this facility and in all phases that lead up to the experiments. The second annual workshop organized by the AI4EIC working group, which recently took place, centered on exploring all current and prospective application areas of AI for the EIC. This workshop is not only beneficial for the EIC, but also provides valuable insights for the newly established ePIC collaboration at EIC. …
From Rain Drops To Rivers: Unraveling Aridification's Influence On Coastal Stream Ecosystem Dynamics, Sean Kelly Kinard
From Rain Drops To Rivers: Unraveling Aridification's Influence On Coastal Stream Ecosystem Dynamics, Sean Kelly Kinard
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This dissertation addresses the escalating threat of aridification to global freshwater ecosystems due to anthropogenic climate change, focusing on South-Central Texas, USA, using a space-for-time approach along a precipitation gradient from semi-arid to sub-humid. Over the 2017-2020 survey period, I integrated community, stable isotope, climate, and hydrologic data.In Chapter 2, my initial assessment of fish and invertebrate communities along the precipitation gradient unveiled compositional shifts and other nuanced responses. Positive correlations between fish diversity and rainfall, coupled with unexpected invertebrate diversity patterns, underscored the role of water quality in shaping fish assemblages. Drier conditions imposed abiotic filters, reducing diversity and …
Social Media And Professional Learning, Tiffany Truitt
Social Media And Professional Learning, Tiffany Truitt
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Although research indicates professional learning could positively influence both teacher retention and student achievement, many educators continue to express dissatisfaction with professional learning experiences. In a Virginia Department of Education (VDOE, 2019b) survey, teachers at Roth High School expressed issues with misalignment between the content of professional learning offerings and their specific learning needs, a lack of follow-up implementation support, and a failure to see an effect on student achievement. Using Guskey’s (2000) Five Levels of Professional Development Framework, which uses a leveled approached to assessing professional learning, this action research study sought to achieve a better understanding of the …
“I Got A Migraine And That Sucked”: College Students’ Affective Stance Towards Their Migraine Experiences, Megha Vasudevan
“I Got A Migraine And That Sucked”: College Students’ Affective Stance Towards Their Migraine Experiences, Megha Vasudevan
Undergraduate Research Awards
Migraines are a genetically influenced disorder and they are a common cause for disability (Ruschel & Jesus, 2023). This study seeks to examine the affective stance of college students towards their migraines. Affective stance refers to overt expressions of emotions in relation towards a particular entity to convey an emotional position in relation to that entity (Du Bois & Kärkkäinen, 2012, Kiesling 2022). Since this study was seeking to research a specific community, both participants were recruited because of their migraine experience. The findings of this study reveal that college students generally take a negative stance towards their migraine experiences, …
Contextual Influences In Tp(A)Ck Research: Bronfenbrenner And Beyond, Judi Harris, Ting Huang
Contextual Influences In Tp(A)Ck Research: Bronfenbrenner And Beyond, Judi Harris, Ting Huang
School of Education Book Chapters
This critical review examines the past 15 years of scholarship about contextual influences in TP(A)CK to better understand its theoretical bases. While Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory is usually applied in this work, either implicitly or explicitly, its articulation is most often incomplete and/or inaccurate, with some confusion evident about the nature and foci of multiple, intersecting systems of contextual influences. We argue for a more comprehensive way to theorize context in future TP(A)CK research, using Bronfenbrenner’s systemic explanations of the complex and interdependent aspects of contextual influences and actors. We also recommend additional focus upon indirect, intersectional and sociocultural influences …
The Body In Pieces: Towards A Feminist Phenomenology Of Violence, Archana Kaku
The Body In Pieces: Towards A Feminist Phenomenology Of Violence, Archana Kaku
Arts & Sciences Articles
This article proposes that feminist phenomenology offers an essential set of conceptual tools for analysing forms of violence which destroy the body beyond the point of death. To illustrate the potential utility of this approach, I apply this lens to the 11 September 2001 attack on the World Trade Center in Manhattan, New York City. I identify several distinct modes of bodily transformation from the attack, grouped into three broad categories: vaporised bodies, intermingled remains, and hidden fragments. I describe how these transformations unsettled the relationships between bodies and contexts, and occasioned the formation of new relationships in ways that …
Using Professional Development As A Tool To Build Teacher Capacity For Recognizing Giftedness In African American Students, Dr. Jacqueline D. Drye
Using Professional Development As A Tool To Build Teacher Capacity For Recognizing Giftedness In African American Students, Dr. Jacqueline D. Drye
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
African American students are underrepresented in gifted programs in American public schools. This is due in part to the teachers’ role in the gifted identification process. Classroom teachers are asked to refer students for evaluation for gifted services. To effectively do this, teachers must understand the unique challenges faced by gifted students from diverse populations, be able to recognize potential and be willing to explore their own perceptions about giftedness. When considering the historical plight of African Americans and their quest for an equitable education, coupled with current statistics on income, employment and educational attainment, the need to address this …
