The Physics Of The Healing - Book I & Ii, Jon Mcginnis Dec 2008

The Physics Of The Healing - Book I & Ii, Jon Mcginnis

Jon McGinnis

Avicenna’s Physics is the very first volume that he wrote when he began his monumental encyclopedia of science and philosophy, The Healing. Avicenna’s reasons for beginning with Physics are numerous: it offers up the principles needed to understand such special natural sciences as psychology; it sets up many of the problems that take center stage in his Metaphysics; and it provides concrete examples of many of the abstract analytical tools that he would develop later in Logic. While Avicenna’s Physics roughly follows the thought of Aristotle’s Physics, with its emphasis on natural causes, the nature of motion, and the conditions necessary …

Imagining Territories: Space, Place, And The Anticity, Jonathan Yovel Dec 2008

Imagining Territories: Space, Place, And The Anticity, Jonathan Yovel

Jonathan Yovel

This essay explores the concept of "Territory" in some of its cultural forms, as well as looks into cultural and linguistic conditions for territories-talk. Initially, it engages territory as a pre-political representation and explores its formal relation to space and to place. It defines territory as the paradigmatic non-place and contrasts it with the concept of the city (in fact, an anticity), especially as reflected in renaissance and early modern art/architecture, with examples from Schedel, Bellini, Breugel and others, as well as from contemporary graphic works (Moebius, Qual, Nowak).

Moving from the cultural to the political, territories are then explored …

Desire-Based Reasons, Naturalism, And The Possibility Of Vindication, Attila Tanyi Dec 2008

Desire-Based Reasons, Naturalism, And The Possibility Of Vindication, Attila Tanyi

Attila Tanyi

The aim of the paper is to critically assess the idea that reasons for action are provided by desires (the Model). I start from the claim that the most often employed meta-ethical background for the Model is ethical naturalism; I then argue against the Model through its naturalist background. For the latter purpose I make use of two objections that are both intended to refute naturalism per se. One is G. E. Moore’s Open Question Argument (OQA), the other is Derek Parfit’s Triviality Objection (TO). I show that naturalists might be able to avoid both objections in case they can …

A Frankfurti Iskola És 1968 (The Frankfurt School And 1968), Attila Tanyi Dec 2008

A Frankfurti Iskola És 1968 (The Frankfurt School And 1968), Attila Tanyi

Attila Tanyi

The aim of the paper is to investigate the connection between the Frankfurt School and the events of 1968. Accordingly, the paper focuses only on those important members of the School whose philosophical, ideological or practical influence on the events is clearly detectable. This means dealing with four thinkers in three sections: the influence of Adorno and Horkheimer is treated in the same section, whereas the work of Marcuse and Habermas is examined in separate sections. The three sections represent three different approaches. Adorno and Horkheimer are passive onlookers of the events their passivity being rooted in their skeptical philosophical …

Sulle Tracce Della Malinconia. Un Approccio Filosofico-Sociale, In "Costruzioni Psicoanalitiche", Ix, N. 17 (2009), Pp. 83-102., Marco Solinas

Marco Solinas

Keeping The Global Recession In Perspective, Karl Widerquist Dec 2008

Keeping The Global Recession In Perspective, Karl Widerquist

Karl Widerquist

The global recession has been spreading and deepening for nearly a year. It could become the worst downturn since the Great Depression of the 1930s, and it has captured nearly all of the attention we, our media, and our leaders pay to economic issues. Perhaps we’re paying too much attention to it. I want to convince you in this editorial that a recession—even a major depression—is not an economic problem of the first magnitude. Our most pressing economic problems are distribution, and they exist whether we are in recession or not. Recessions appear to be a major problem primarily because …

比较哲学中的分化, Stephen C. Angle Dec 2008

比较哲学中的分化, Stephen C. Angle

Stephen C. Angle

Defining 'Virtue Ethics' And Exploring Virtues In A Comparative Context: Comments On Bryan W. Van Norden, Virtue Ethics And Confucianism In Early Chinese Philosophy, Stephen C. Angle Dec 2008

Defining 'Virtue Ethics' And Exploring Virtues In A Comparative Context: Comments On Bryan W. Van Norden, Virtue Ethics And Confucianism In Early Chinese Philosophy, Stephen C. Angle

Stephen C. Angle

Bryan Van Norden’s new book, Virtue ethics and Consequentialism in Early Chinese Philosophy (Van Norden 2007; references to this book will be indicated with page numbers only) is impressive and learned, pursuing a number of inter-related objectives in its 412 pages. My task here is to reflect on the book’s objectives and to ask whether they are well-conceived and successfully accomplished. Van Norden’s book has enhanced my understanding and stimulated my thinking on many fronts; I hope, therefore, to take advantage of this forum to open up opportunities for further philosophical work that builds on the foundation Van Norden has …
