Alain Badiou: The Event Of Becoming A Political Subject, Antonio Calcagno Nov 2009

Alain Badiou: The Event Of Becoming A Political Subject, Antonio Calcagno

Antonio Calcagno

One of the more poignant claims Badiou makes is that the subject develops an understanding of itself as a political subject only by executing decisive political actions or making decisive political interventions. In this article I will argue that in order to have a fuller philosophical conception of political subjectivity, and therefore political agency, one must also hold that, first, political interventions do not necessarily lead to a definition or a further way of referring to and understanding the subject. In fact, political events and interventions may consciously aim at and result in the de-politicizing, de-subjectivating or dehumanizing of the …

Would The United States Doctrine Of Preventative War Be Justified As A United Nations Doctrine?, Harry Van Der Linden Mar 2009

Would The United States Doctrine Of Preventative War Be Justified As A United Nations Doctrine?, Harry Van Der Linden

Harry van der Linden

On the same day, 23 September 2003, that President George W. Bush defended his Iraq policy to the General Assembly of the United Nations, Secretary-General Kofi Annan also spoke to the Assembly. Annan reiterated his opposition to the view that states may independently be justified in using military force “preemptively” to avoid the dangers posed by the spread of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) among states and terrorists, including nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons.

Moral Realism And Ways Of Life, Matthew Pianalto Dec 2008

Moral Realism And Ways Of Life, Matthew Pianalto

Matthew Pianalto

Walter Sinnott-Armstrong claims that a person's commitment to a way of life is a relevant factor in deciding what the agent ought to do in a moral dilemma. If that is correct, then extreme universal moral realism, which claims that facts about the agent make no contribution to the truth of what an agent ought to do, is false. In this paper, I attempt to characterize a kind of moral realism that can account for the relevance of ways of life to the resolution of personal moral dilemmas.

Friendship, Altruism And Morality (Routledge Revivals), Lawrence Blum Dec 2008

Friendship, Altruism And Morality (Routledge Revivals), Lawrence Blum

Lawrence Blum

Friendship, Altruism, and Morality, originally published in 1980, gives an account of "altruistic emotions" (compassion, sympathy, concern) and friendship that brings out their moral value. Blum argues that moral theories centered on rationality, universal principle, obligation, and impersonality cannot capture this moral importance. This was one of the first books in contemporary moral philosophy to emphasize the moral significance of emotions, to deal with friendship as a moral phenomenon, and to challenge the rationalism of standard interpretations of Kant, although Blum’s "sentimentalism" owes more to Schopenhauer than to Hume. It was a forerunner to care ethics, and feminist ethics …

Darwin, Ethics And Evolution, Harry Gensler, S.J. Dec 2008

Darwin, Ethics And Evolution, Harry Gensler, S.J.

Harry J. Gensler, S.J.

This coherent collection of original papers marks the 150 year anniversary since the publication of Charles Darwin's Origin of Species (1859). Although the area of evolution-related publications is vast, the area of interaction between Darwinian ideas and specifically Catholic doctrine has received limited attention. This interaction is quite distinct from the one between Darwinism and the Christian tradition in general. Interest in Darwin from the Catholic viewpoint has recently been rekindled.
