Studies On The Trematode Larva Neascus, Thomas Reyes

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

During the spring semesters of 1955 and 1956, while the writer was under the supervision of Dr. A. E. Noble, a preliminary survey was initiated on parasites in local fishes, amphibians, and reptiles occurring in the vicinity of Stockton, California. The collection of specimens in this survey included sixteen green sunfish, Lepomis cyanella, and two bluegills, L. macrochirus. Larval trematodes recovered from the heart and liver of these specimens belonged to the family Diplostomatidae Poirier (1886) which is characterized by a conspicuous constriction separating the fore and hind-bodies. The leaf-like forebody with the lateral borders converging ventrally to form a …

The Comparative Morphology Of The Central Nervous System Of The Larva, Pupa, And Adult Of Epilachnia Corrupta, Raymond F. Moore Jun 1956

The Comparative Morphology Of The Central Nervous System Of The Larva, Pupa, And Adult Of Epilachnia Corrupta, Raymond F. Moore

Master's Theses

The nervous system of insects has been subject of much study and research. By far the greatest part of this work has been on the orders of Orthopters, Lepidopters, Hymenopters, Diptera, and Coleoptera. This has been limited, in most cases, to a particular stage in the life history of the insect. This paper looks to study the morphology of the central nervous system of Epilachnia corrupta through all its stages in its life cycle.

The Effect Of Adrenal Steroid Hormones On The Protein Content Of Tumorous Livers, Duncan W. Martin May 1956

The Effect Of Adrenal Steroid Hormones On The Protein Content Of Tumorous Livers, Duncan W. Martin

Biology ETDs

Protein is basic to the structure and function of protoplasm. Enzyme systems which regulate the rate of cellular reactions are primarily composed of protein and many of these enzymatic systems influence the metabolism of less specialized proteins that form the major structural material of protoplasm. It is believed that experimental procedures which modify protein composition of cells may also influence the activity of intra-cellular enzymes. In experimental live cancer, it has been shown that the activities of a number of oxidative enzymes are modified as the carcinogenic process proceeds (Richmond, 1955, p.38). Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that endocrine function …

Observations On The Morphology, Physiology, And Life History Of Allescheria Boydii Shear, Robert Denton Flory Apr 1956

Observations On The Morphology, Physiology, And Life History Of Allescheria Boydii Shear, Robert Denton Flory

Master's Theses

Of those organisms upon the face of the earth displaying a wide range of variability, excellent examples may be found amoung certain groups of the fungi. This extreme variation as noted in certain fungal groups becomes even more interesting when the phenomenon of sexuality is eliminated or of rare occurrence as in many of the Fungi Imperfecti. Such extreme variations occur in Allescheria Boydii, whose historical background is as interesting as the growth of the fungus itself.

In 1909 Tarozzi (46)isolated a fungus organism as the causative agent in a Sardinian case of mycetoma. Tarozzi referred this fungus to Saccardo, …

Flight Activities Of The Ant Dolichoderus (Hypoclinea) Mariae Forel, Mary Talbot Jan 1956

Flight Activities Of The Ant Dolichoderus (Hypoclinea) Mariae Forel, Mary Talbot

Faculty Scholarship

Often some reference is made to the "flight" of a .species of ants as if all the males and females left the colony .on one day. W. M. Wheeler, in his 1905 account of the genus Dolichoderus, said .o D. mariae" "August 20 is approximately the date of the nuptial flight oi this species." Today it is generally understood that there are usually a number oi flights. This study shows that D. mariae is conspicuous in this respect.

Master's Theses

The golden shiner, Notemigonus crysoleucaa, forms a monotypic species in the fish family, Cyprinidae. It is a medium-sized minnow which inhabits ponds and sluggish freshwater streams in North America from latitude; 30°N. to 50°N. In the south its range is restricted to the area east of the Appalachian Mountains. The northern and western part of the range extends to Wyoming and south to the drainages of the Arkansas and upper Ohio Rivers.

A Taxonomic And Ecological Study Of The Ants On The Campus Of The University Of New Mexico, Tad S. Clements Nov 1955

A Taxonomic And Ecological Study Of The Ants On The Campus Of The University Of New Mexico, Tad S. Clements

Biology ETDs

This thesis attempts to indicate some of the ways in which the ants of the campus of the University of New Mexico affect man within the small area of the campus. However, my purpose of doing the study has not been strictly limited by practical considerations. Until now, no systematic study has been made of the Formicidae of the University of New Mexico Campus. Since the habitats produced artificially by man on the University of New Mexico Campus have resulted in favoring certain species of ants not found by the writer elsewhere in the region, the present study is valuable.

3) to observe the effect of additional dietary riboflavin upon liver and tumor d-amino acid oxidase activity in animals bearing hepatomas in an effort to determine whether the vitamin could still be utilized in these tissues;

4) to compare succinoxidase activity in the different livers and hepatomas since this enzyme system is also …

The Minimal Nutritional Requirements Of Several Strains Of Shigella Dysenteriae 1, Roy M. Johnson May 1955

The Minimal Nutritional Requirements Of Several Strains Of Shigella Dysenteriae 1, Roy M. Johnson

Biology ETDs

The study of bacterial nutrition is fundamental to an understanding of the physiological aspects of microorganisms. The advances made in biochemical research during the past few decades have permitted the employment of synthetic media for a large number of microorganisms previously able to grow only on complex, ill-defined media. In turn, microorganisma have become a valuable tool of the biochemist for the assay of vitamins and growth factors. These combined efforts of the biochemist and the microbiologist have advanced the entire field of physiology applicable to all organisms.

Relation Between Specific Ionization Of Various Radiations And Their Relative Biological Effectiveness In Mammalian Systems, John E. Furchner May 1955

Relation Between Specific Ionization Of Various Radiations And Their Relative Biological Effectiveness In Mammalian Systems, John E. Furchner

Biology ETDs

The relative biological effectiveness of several radiations of differing specific ionizations was determined. The radiation effect studied was impairment of bone marrow function, and the biological test system used was the depression of Fe59 uptake by the red blood cells of male Sprague-Dawley rats. The effectiveness of the mixed radiations in the thermal column of a homogeneous reactor was compared with 250-KVP X radiation, and the effect of the beta particles of tritium was compared with that of Co60 gamma rays. The effect of the alpha particles of Pu and Ra on bone marrow function was also determined.

A Cytological Study Of The Induced Octoploid Of An Agropyron-Hordeum Hybrid, R. Bruce Ashman May 1955

A Cytological Study Of The Induced Octoploid Of An Agropyron-Hordeum Hybrid, R. Bruce Ashman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The occurrence of hybrids, both interspecific and intergeneric, is frequent in the Gramineae generally (Stebbins, 1949), and is especially common in the tribe Hordeae of which both A. trachycaulum and H. jubatum are members. Intergeneric hybrids in this tribe have been studied by Stebbins et al. (1946a, and 1946b), Stebbins and Walters (1949), and Stebbins and Singh (1950) in an effort to determine true phylogenetic relationships on which to base a taxonomic classification, and results of these studies have indicated that the current taxonomic treatment of this tribe is highly artificial. Attempts to produce a perennial wheat and improve …

Succession In A Dune Community At Mentor Headlands, Ohio, Harold G. Marshall Jan 1955

Succession In A Dune Community At Mentor Headlands, Ohio, Harold G. Marshall

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Continual sand deposition on the Lake Erie shore, adjacent to the mouth of the Grand River, has led to the formation of a developing sand dune community and through the years a successional pattern of plant growth. An analysis was made of the general plant composition of the area by means of four transects directed from the bare beach inland. Definite zonation of specific plant species was present throughout the community in parallel formation. Named for the dominant plant types they contained, the major stages were: dune grass, poplar, aspen, and oak.

Measurement Of Residual Lung Capacities And Ventilatory Efficiency By The Nitrogen Clearance Method, Elizabeth Roorbach Jun 1954

Measurement Of Residual Lung Capacities And Ventilatory Efficiency By The Nitrogen Clearance Method, Elizabeth Roorbach

Biology ETDs

Essential to an understanding of the behavior of the lung is a knowledge of its total gas capacity and those fractions of it which are utilized in the process of normal breathing. Only when these volumes are known, it is possible to make an appraisal of the efficiency of the pulmonary ventilation in maintaining physiologically adequate levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the alveolar spaces with a minimum of ventilatory effort.

The Nutritional Requirements Of A Strain Of Shigella Dysenteriae 1, Carl G. Mays May 1954

The Nutritional Requirements Of A Strain Of Shigella Dysenteriae 1, Carl G. Mays

Biology ETDs

It was the purpose of this investigation to develop [a synthetic] medium for the growth of Shigella dysenteriae 1, strain 14-1, originally obtained from the collection at the Army Medical Service Graduate School. Not only was it desirable to grow the cells, but also to grow them in large quantities in the least possible time. Although considerable work has been done in determining the various growth essentials for many of the Shigella group, particularly the Flexner strains of Shigella paradysenteriae, comparatively little has be ascertained regarding those strains included in Shigella dysenteriae.
