A Study Of The Revolt In Modern American Literature As Seen In The Novel, Poetry, And Prose Fiction, Dovie Viola Ross

Master's Theses

Since the earliest time that the human mind has been known to function it has played with two opposite conceptions ---all is fixed – all is changing. These two conceptions, affording the bases for opposing schools in philosophy and politics and supplying direction for the social forces of conservatism and radicalism, have naturally influenced our interpretation and theories of literature.

The Short Story Technique Of Wilbur Daniel Steele, Grace Mcmahan Rogers May 1931

The Short Story Technique Of Wilbur Daniel Steele, Grace Mcmahan Rogers

Master's Theses

The juggernaut of Industrialism is running amok in America today – and its blind, crazed devotees are being crushed amid the clamor and the noise, the abandoned irresponsibility of a barbaric festival. Industrialism is affecting all literature, but the short story, is chiefly threatened. The magazine is its forum, and the magazine must make money or suspend. The commercialized short-story is a mirror of the times – it takes in all movements. The American short-stories form a composite picture of life in the United States. The typical short story in the past quarter-century, and particularly since the World War, as …

A Chronological Analysis And Interpretation Of The Plays Of Eugene Gladstone O'Neill, Violet Carey D'Urban-Coles May 1930

A Chronological Analysis And Interpretation Of The Plays Of Eugene Gladstone O'Neill, Violet Carey D'Urban-Coles

Master's Theses

In this thesis I have endeavored to give a chronological estimate and interpretation of Eugene O’Neill’s plays as well as nearly in the order of their writing as possible. I have incorporated in this article only those of O’Neill’s plays which I have read and studied thoroughly, giving first a brief summary and then a criticism of each. These include all except eight of O’Neill’s printed plays. Five of the eight are Thirst, The Web, Warnings, Fog, and Recklessness, which were printed in 1914 under the title of Thirst and Other One-Act Plays by Eugene C. O’Neill. However, O’Neill has …

The Imagist Movement In America: History And Development, Helen Christie Malcolm May 1930

The Imagist Movement In America: History And Development, Helen Christie Malcolm

Master's Theses

The commercial age in America, coupled with the World war, has had no less influence in the field of poetic values than in the field of business. In the following pages I have attempted to show that the outlook of modern poetry is both natural and purposeful as a result of its environment and background; that, though unstable and variable at the present, it is gradually attaining through various short-lived movements, a degree of finish and crystallization; and that the entire outlook is a presagement, a finger pointing in the direction of a fuller, richer cultural life that shall come …

Aspects Of Pre-Civil War Historical Drama, Elizabeth Ernestine Coles May 1930

Aspects Of Pre-Civil War Historical Drama, Elizabeth Ernestine Coles

Master's Theses

This thesis is an attempt to present in a general way some aspects of the pre-Civil War historical drama. The plays chosen cover the years from 1766-1830 inclusive. Arthur Hobson Quinn and Montrose J. Moses, writers on early American drama, have endeavored to treat the entire field in its social, political, historical, and economical aspects. I have limited my attempt to the historical phase in which there are at least five distinct groups. The following topical analysis of the plays I have used will present these more clearly.

Christian Missions Among The Kansas Indians, Bertha Ellen Milstead May 1930

Christian Missions Among The Kansas Indians, Bertha Ellen Milstead

Master's Theses

The establishment of Missions among the Indians who were settled in the Kansas region is apart of the story of the “Winning of the West.” The fate of the Indian was certain from the very beginning and those forces which fitted him in the end to take his place in the national life as a responsible individual were real factors in progress. The reservation system was but one stage in the gradual crowding of the Indian from his free hunting life and served only as a training school for the next stage of individual responsibility. One of the agencies which …

English Religious Poetry Of The Nineteenth Century As Influenced By The Catholic Spirit, Mary Mida Jun 1926

English Religious Poetry Of The Nineteenth Century As Influenced By The Catholic Spirit, Mary Mida

Master's Theses

Since we are now entering upon the second quarter of the twentieth century, it follows that the perspective thus offered gives ample scope for an authoritative report on the literary output of the preceding century, in the special field chosen - English Religious Poetry. The older English poets wrote from an established point of view, that is, their human creed and their idea of man coincided, while the modern English poets voice the protest or the defense of those who have little in common save the genius of the Bard. This has led to a certain recklessness in the matter …

James Barron Hope : Virginia's Poet-Laureate, Cullen S. Pitt Jan 1901

James Barron Hope : Virginia's Poet-Laureate, Cullen S. Pitt

Master's Theses

Previous to the Civil War comparatively little literary work had been done in the south. Of course if we take into consideration all kinds of composition, such as narratives of adventure, diaries, histories, speeches, sermons and the like, we are forced to admit that the total amount was very large. But when we speak of literature in the higher and more restricted sense, we mean that which stimulates the imagination, awakens thought and aims to please as well as to instruct. And, using the word in this narrow and more restricted sense, it is quite evident that there had been …
