A Survey Of Early Washington County And A Study Of The Development Of Hollenberg, Kansas, J. Holland Vernon Jul 1949

A Survey Of Early Washington County And A Study Of The Development Of Hollenberg, Kansas, J. Holland Vernon

Master's Theses

The first permanent settlement in Washington County was made in the late eighteen fifties. Beginning in the 18301 s, emigrants from the East had crossed it repeatedly. This small trickle of travelers was to grow to impressive proportions in the late forties and early fifties when thousands rushed westward to the fertile land of the Pacific Northwest and to the gold fields of the Sierras and 1 the Rockies. During the late sixties, the county was settled rapidly and by 1875 it was well beyond the pioneer stage. Its growth and development has been gradual and consistent-typical of numerous other …

There Were Thirteen: A Pioneer Novel Of Western Kansas, Gwen Lane Funston Jul 1941

There Were Thirteen: A Pioneer Novel Of Western Kansas, Gwen Lane Funston

Master's Theses

In my thesis, I wish to present the story of my maternal grandmother as it is revealed in the lives of her thirteen children. I have been interested in the story since I can remember. My earliest memories are of sitting on Grandma’s lap and listening to tales of Indians on the warpath, of Kansas prairie sod houses and rattlesnakes, and of what my aunts, uncles, and my mother used to do when they were small. To avoid any possible embarrassment to living persons, I have fictionized the names of my characters. I have, however, retained all actual dates and …

Tom Plumb, A Novel, Gwendolyn Dimmitt Jul 1941

Tom Plumb, A Novel, Gwendolyn Dimmitt

Master's Theses

This is a true story, as far as actual dates and the verification of the incidents is concerned. The writer has filled in the conversation and the human interest bits as it seemed the people of that day might have talked or acted. Mr. Plumb is a true character, and the story of his life is given according to the facts as the writer was able to find them. That Mr. Plumb was a typical, and yet individual character, is proved by the fact that one year before his death he was chosen by t h e Red Willow County, …

Ellsworth, Kansas : The History Of A Frontier Town, 1854-1885, John Choitz Jul 1941

Ellsworth, Kansas : The History Of A Frontier Town, 1854-1885, John Choitz

Master's Theses

Frontier towns have developed along the same pattern. First, a lawless element ruled the locality with its threat of sudden death. Dead men, carried out with their boots on, gave mute proof to the skeptical that such threats were not idly given. Next, enterprising citizens, organizing in the dead of the night, brought some respect for decency and order by swinging one end of a rope over a projecting limb of a cottonwood tree and knotting the other end around the neck of a lawless ringleader. Then justice courts and law officers were introduced as the civilized - though many …

History Of The Kansas Mennonites With A Study Of Their European Background, Victor C. Seibert

Master's Theses

Many books have been written on Mennonite history, but these deal largely with the religious aspect of their life. The purpose of this thesis is to present the social, moral, economic and political aspects of their migrations and life, not only of their early centuries, but of the present time. Only enough of the religious element will be presented to give a general modern knowledge of their religious beliefs which in turn influence their life in general. Particularly will it be stressed how these people have influenced the history of Kansas. This thesis was written for the purpose of preserving …

Victoria: The Story Of A Western Kansas Town, Marjorie Gamet Raish May 1937

Victoria: The Story Of A Western Kansas Town, Marjorie Gamet Raish

Master's Theses

This thesis is a history of the English colony at Victoria, Kansas, from the purchase of the land from the Kansas Pacific Railroad by Georg E. Grant in 1872 until the end of the colony in the early eighties. It does not attempt to deal in any complete form with history of the German- Russians who settled at Herzog, a mile north of the original town of Victoria in 1876. The history of Herzog is a story in itself, an intensely interesting one, but too long to be more than suggested in this thesis. It is given only for the …

This thesis is divided into three parts. The first part tells about the European homes of my parents and about their coming to Kansas. The second part is about their marriage and moving into Hodgeman County where they and other Mennonite families formed a Mennonite colony. Various pioneer experiences are recounted. The third part tells about the opening of the Cherokee Strip in Oklahoma Territory and my parents moving to the Strip to take up pioneer life farther south. In this work I attempted to portray the pioneer life of my parents and show that their experiences were typical of …

Social Conditions Of Territorial Kansas, Clifford Dwight Miller Jul 1936

Social Conditions Of Territorial Kansas, Clifford Dwight Miller

Master's Theses

Who were the people making up Kansas Territory, or simply “K.T.”, as correspondence was addressed from everywhere? Coming to Kansas from New England and the Middle Atlantic states through the agency of the Emigrant Aid Company, from the Middle and Western states, from the Southern states, and from foreign countries, they had a variety of folk lore and pioneer technique they could put to work. It seems that they would constitute an extremely chaotic society when viewed from this standpoint; yet, they were all sired by progressive peoples, and, if we consider them from the viewpoint of culture and social …
