Supporting Critical Reflection In Pre-Service Teacher Education, Charlene Huntley

Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education

Reflection has long been identified by teacher educators as a highly-desirable characteristic for future teachers. It is considered one determiner for effective, professional practice. However, the definitions for what is meant by reflection, as well as best practices for developing and sustaining its use, have become problematic. This synthesis is a review of the various working definitions and frameworks proposed by experts and teacher education programs. Studies focused on developing and sustaining critical reflection are also reviewed. Suggestions for teaching and sustaining critical reflection in teacher education programs are made based on the reviewed studies.

Using Top Ten Lists To Encourage Faith Integration Discussion In Economics Courses, Kent Saunders

Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education

This article describes the use of top ten lists as a way to break the ice with students and begin a discussion about integrating one’s faith into the subject matter of a course. The literature has shown that the use of top ten lists has proven to be an attention-grabbing way of introducing a topic that encourages student participation and incites class discussion. The use of Biblically inspired top ten lists in economics classes was investigated with results similar to those observed in the literature.

Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education

Student writing in the chemistry laboratory has always been an important part of the laboratory experience. Student learning is a complex process including many different factors. Proponents of writing to learn theory suggest that using writing in the laboratory experience should increase the amount of student learning in chemistry. To evaluate the impact of writing on student learning during an introductory chemistry laboratory experience, several lab sections participated in a study to compare student learning in non-writing labs to student learning in writing intensive labs.
