Promoting Undergraduate Research In Minnesota: A Luoma Leadership Academy Project, Jason A. Kaufman, Marilyn Swan, Mark Johnson, Michelle Malott, James A. (Jim) Grabowska

Educational Leadership Department Publications

As participants in the 2011-2012 class of the Luoma Leadership Academy, the authors comprised an action team charged to investigate how undergraduate research is currently incorporated into collegiate studies in Minnesota. We developed a survey that was delivered to Deans at all Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) institutions using the MnSCU Deans listserv. Respondents to the survey represented all 7 universities and all 30 of the community colleges. This suggests that the findings of our action project have real generalization within the system and potentially similar public systems of higher education in other states. We offer data-driven recommendations and …

Seeking More High-Quality Undergraduate Degrees: Conditions For More Effectively Working With Policy Makers, Judith A. Ramaley

Higher Education

Our nation’s colleges and universities have always sought to prepare their graduates for life and work in their own era. The pressures we face today, both from outside the academy and within the higher education community, are complex, interlocking, and hard to manage. Some of these challenges require us to rethink what it means to be educated in today’s world and to explore ways to provide a coherent and meaningful educational experience in the face of the turbulence, uncertainty, and fragmentation that characterizes much of higher education today.

How Disruptive Is Information Technology Really?, Judith A. Ramaley

Higher Education

In an administrative career lasting over thirty years, first as a provost and then through three presidencies and a stint at the National Science Foundation, I have watched while changes in technology have reshaped the nature and character of discovery, the gathering and interpretation of increasingly complex observations whose patterns would be completely opaque if we did not have high-speed computing to sort them out, and the integration and use of knowledge in ways that would have been impossible when I went to college in the early 1960s. I went from having to learn the purpose of each of the …

Thriving In The 21st Century By Tackling Wicked Problems, Judith A. Ramaley

Higher Education

More than 20 years ago, I was a member of a leadership roundtable in Portland, Oregon, that was working on achieving the ambitious goal of 100 percent graduation rate from high school. In the course of our deliberations, we finally asked ourselves why young people were dropping out of school. After listening to a number of experts talk about retention, we thought to ask ourselves, “What would the young people themselves say?” To find out, we invited a group of young high school dropouts and high school student leaders to an afternoon conversation. The experts had talked about various strategies …

Paperless Subjective Programming Assignment Assessment: A First Step, David Hansen

Faculty Publications - Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

A significant component of student evaluation includes the objective and subjective assessment of programming assignments. We describe bits and pieces of a paperless electronic workflow we’ve recently used to provide objective and subjective feedback to students, emphasizing the tools and process used to provide subjective programming assignment assessment. We identify opportunities for future work to complete an end-to-end paperless electronic workflow that incorporates subjective assessment.

The National Security Education Program And Its Service Requirement: An Exploratory Study Of What Areas Of Government And For What Duration National Security Education Program Recipients Have Worked, David J. Comp

Dissertations

The National Security Education Program, established under the National Security Education Act of 1991, has had a post-funding service requirement in the Federal Government for undergraduate scholarship and graduate fellowship recipients since its inception. The service requirement, along with the concern that the National Security Education Program was and remains funded by the United States Department of Defense, was very controversial in the early years of the program and remains a concern for some faculty and scholarly organizations to this day. Questions arise about whether the National Security Education Program is successfully achieving government objectives of employing National Security Education …

An Investigation Of Chinese Graduate Student Understanding Of Academic Integrity In U'S Higher Education, James E. Hammerschmidt 2013 Loyola University Chicago

An Investigation Of Chinese Graduate Student Understanding Of Academic Integrity In U'S Higher Education, James E. Hammerschmidt

Dissertations

Recent studies suggest that plagiarism in U.S. higher education may be more of an issue among Chinese graduate students. When Chinese graduate students are accused of plagiarizing an implicit assumption often exists that poor language skills or lack of integrity may be the cause. The failure to consider cross-cultural issues in learning may have led to these views. An examination of previous learning experiences in the Chinese graduate student's home country was needed in order to obtain a deeper understanding of how culture enters into their understanding of academic dishonesty. This study seeks to a.) explore the understanding and meaning …

Delayed Onset Muscular Soreness: A Look Into Post-Exercise Pain, Christopher Meltsakos

Quill & Scope

Delayed onset muscular soreness (DOMS) is a common problem that is experienced by elite athletes and weekend warriors alike. The typical characterization of dull aches, stiffness, and tenderness in one’s muscles 24-72 hours later are a hallmark of this exercise condition that is postulated to result from damage to muscular ultra- structures obtained during eccentric muscle contraction. Because of the prevalence and general lack of awareness for this muscular phenomenon, the purpose of this paper is to provide a definition and summary of DOMS, to discuss the various theories regarding the mechanism of action resulting in muscular damage, and to …

The Need For An Automated Acuity Tool For Children With Special Health Care Needs, Kartik Telukuntla, Lee M. Sanders

Quill & Scope

Children with special health care needs (CSHCN) often require extended and continuous contact with health care professionals due to their chronic conditions. Additionally, some of these children have other non-health burdens, including multiple problems with access to care, that make it even more difficult to treat their medical illness. These extra obstacles illustrate that effective care for CSHCN requires proper care coordination among a network of doctors, nurses, and care coordinators. Unfortunately, care coordination has been inadequate due to large caseload assignments. An automated acuity tool that reassesses the child’s acuity (low, medium or high) regularly would help balance the …
