"Our Stories" Developing A Virtual Community Of First-Year Voices, Sandra Cheng, Jennifer Sears, Karen Goodlad, Ashwin Satyanarayana, Mery Diaz, Philip Kreniske

Publications and Research

First Year Learning Communities (FYLC) at City Tech is structured to provide first-year students in linked courses an interdisciplinary learning experience. This approach creates opportunities for students to form bonds within the college community. A shared belief among faculty leaders in the potential for writing to transform the student experience led to the development of the “Our Stories” digital writing project. “Our Stories” offers FYLC students the opportunity to express their experiences in classes, seminars, lectures, study groups, and labs on the OpenLab, a digital platform for teaching, learning, and sharing. Through this project, students shared their stories and revealed …

Bgsu Student Perceptions Of Mental Health Care And Associated Barriers, Adriana Italiano

Honors Projects

It has been estimated that half of adults within the United States with mental disorders do not seek any treatment (Eisenberg et al., 2011). Of the remaining individuals that do seek the necessary services for treatment, there is a “median delay of 11 years between onset of mental disorders and accessing services” (Eisenberg et al., 2007). In the midst of university life, college students carry a heavy burden; the stress of academics, involvement, GPA, as well as their social and family life can allow these students to develop a disorder or fall deeper into their diagnosis. Today’s campus communities, especially …

Skipping Stones: The Ripple Effect Of Collaborating With A Center For Teaching And Learning, Clinton K. Baugess, Kerri Odess-Harnish

All Musselman Library Staff Works

Collaborating with your campus teaching and learning center is a key way to center the library at the heart of conversations on creative pedagogy and student learning. Librarians at a small college library will share how their collaboration has enabled their information literacy program to ripple across campus – expanding their teaching practice beyond the usual one-shot and shifting faculty perceptions of librarians as classroom partners. The presenters will describe how they have contributed their expertise to teaching center programming and administered a series of center-funded faculty grants for information literacy, digital literacy, and teaching with archival materials.

Focus On Graduates, Not Speakers, Ben Sells 2019 Ouachita Baptist University

Focus On Graduates, Not Speakers, Ben Sells

Press Releases

I love the pomp and circumstance that marks commencement. It's the most important, picture-perfect day in the life of a university. And as a president, it's a great honor to present a diploma, shake hands and congratulate each graduate.

The tradition of commencement, one that spans hundreds of years, has a modern addition: the high-profile speaker. It's an approach I once supported. But my mind changed after becoming president of Ouachita Baptist University in 2016. I learned Ouachita's practice was not having an outside commencement speaker. It's a practice I've come to deeply affirm.

Here's why

Finding Connections: Making An Existing Biology Course Interdisciplinary And Using The Experience For The Traditional Course And Oers, Tatiana Voza 2019 CUNY New York City College of Technology

Finding Connections: Making An Existing Biology Course Interdisciplinary And Using The Experience For The Traditional Course And Oers, Tatiana Voza

Publications and Research

Adapting an existing introductory biology course to make it interdisciplinary and successful is an interesting experience and process. With imperatives such as lecture and lab components, a dense curriculum, preexisting learning outcomes and students with different levels of interest, adding material to provide relevant context show how both scientific and social knowledge relate to broader aspects of the human experience, can be challenging. However, once achieved such a course provides epistemological value, real-world context and a rewarding and enriching experience for both students and faculty. In this presentation, the steps involved in designing and implementing an interdisciplinary biology course (Biology …

(Un)Fulfilling Requirements: Satisfactory Academic Progress And Its Impact On First-Generation, Low-Income, Asian American Students, Liza Talusan, Ray Franke 2019 University of Massachusetts Boston

(Un)Fulfilling Requirements: Satisfactory Academic Progress And Its Impact On First-Generation, Low-Income, Asian American Students, Liza Talusan, Ray Franke

Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs

Over the past few years, our understanding of the diverse identities of Asian American students has increased. Yet, the experiences of Asian American students who identify as coming from low-income backgrounds and as first generation college students has been underrepresented in the literature. In particular, this study explored how Asian American students experienced the financial aid process, including the ways in which the federal Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) policy that establishes eligibility criteria for continued student financial aid impacts their experiences in college. Findings suggest student strategies for navigating a complicated process and institutional strategies for reducing confusion and increasing …

Fraternity and Sorority Life is a very sensitive and hot topic in regards to education because of the harm in recent years it has brought to students. However, fraternity and sorority life can still have a significant influence on student populations and help successful higher education institutions. These organizations aim to help students and to develop them both socially and academic. Each council and each organization is unique in their principles, but all serve the purpose of developing students into tomorrow’s leaders. For the National Panhellenic Council, we see these same positives for students of color across campuses nationally. These …
