IMSA Fund Reports
As most of you know, I have been President of IMSA for only seven months, not yet a full year. I feel like I am beginning to get to know IMSA better and better each month, and what I am learning continues to excite me and encourages me to spread the word to others about this amazing place. That is why this issue is going out to hundreds of new readers for the first time, and I welcome the many new superintendents, educators, and friends who will hopefully learn more about IMSA, just as I have these past few months. …
Innovation And Institutional Quality On Economic Growth In Asia, 2015 Bryant University
Innovation And Institutional Quality On Economic Growth In Asia, Nguyen Tran-Nguyen
Honors Projects in Economics
When looking at the different effects of institutional quality on economic development, namely control of corruption, there are two different hypotheses that explain such effects. One is the “grease the wheel” hypothesis, which predicts that corruption is beneficial for growth, and the other one is the “sand the wheel” hypothesis, which says the opposite. Corruption is normally blamed for the slow economic growths in some countries, but some Asian countries’ exponential growths have proven the “grease the wheel” hypothesis otherwise. The “Asian experience”1 phenomenon occurs when corruption does not seem to hamper business activities in some Asian countries. This research …

Gender Through The Generations: Changes In The Representation Of Women In Spanish Advertising, 2015 University of Lynchburg
Gender Through The Generations: Changes In The Representation Of Women In Spanish Advertising, Andrea Muransky
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
This project examines the portrayal of women in Spanish television commercials. The objective of the investigation is to determine if there are significant increases in the representation of women in commercials from three separate years (1990, 2000, and 2010) in order to observe the level of responsiveness of advertising to a more gender-equalized Spanish society. Throughout Spain’s history, women’s roles in the country’s society have changed, with a stronger female presence in the work force as well as in the media. Upon completing this study, it will be determined whether television advertisements in Spain follow these societal trends by increasing …

Video Advertisement Mining For Predicting Revenue Using Random Forest, Yuan Hsin Huang
Open Access Theses
Shaken by the threat of financial crisis in 2008, industries began to work on the topic of predictive analytics to efficiently control inventory levels and minimize revenue risks. In this third-generation age of web-connected data, organizations emphasized the importance of data science and leveraged the data mining techniques for gaining a competitive edge. Consider the features of Web 3.0, where semantic-oriented interaction between humans and computers can offer a tailored service or product to meet consumers' needs by means of learning their preferences. In this study, we concentrate on the area of marketing science to demonstrate the correlation between TV …
Stages Of Succession Planning And Factors Of Transferring Management And Ownership For The Family Agribusiness, 2015 Purdue University
Stages Of Succession Planning And Factors Of Transferring Management And Ownership For The Family Agribusiness, Ryan D. Musselman
Open Access Theses
Although many family business owners want to maintain family control of the business for future generations, few businesses survive across generations. Neglecting to plan an entry and exit strategy for family members are just two factors that explains why more businesses don't succeed in transferring the business to the next generation in the family. Ordered Probit models and Probit models were used to discover factors that influence the process of family business transfer of management and ownership. Data came from a survey of 736 businesses in four Midwest states. ^ Four factors were found to be correlated with the transition …

Narcissism And Leadership: A Meta-Analytic Review Of Linear And Nonlinear Relationships, Emily Grijalva, Peter D. Harms, Daniel A. Newman, Blaine H. Gaddis, R. Chris Fraley
P. D. Harms Publications
Past empirical studies relating narcissism to leadership have offered mixed results. This study integrates prior research findings via meta-analysis to make four contributions to theory on narcissism and leadership, by (a) distinguishing between leadership emergence and leadership effectiveness, to reveal that narcissism displays a positive relationship with leadership emergence, but no relationship with leadership effectiveness; (b) showing narcissism’s positive effect on leadership emergence can be explained by leader extraversion; (c) demonstrating that whereas observer-reported leadership effectiveness ratings (e.g., supervisor-report, subordinate-report, and peer-report) are not related to narcissism, self-reported leadership effectiveness ratings are positively related to narcissism; and (d) illustrating that …
How Functionalist And Process Approaches To Behavior Can Explain Trait Covariation, 2015 Wake Forest University
How Functionalist And Process Approaches To Behavior Can Explain Trait Covariation, Dustin Wood, Molly Hensler Gardner, Peter D. Harms
P. D. Harms Publications
Factors identified in investigations of trait structure (e.g., the Big Five) are sometimes understood as explanations or sources of the covariation of distinct behavioral traits, as when extraversion is suggested to underlie the covariation of assertiveness and sociability. Here, we detail how trait covariation can alternatively be understood as arising from units common to functionalist and process frameworks, such as self-efficacies, expectancies, values, and goals. Specifically, the expected covariation between two behavioral traits should be increased when a specific process variable tends to indicate the functionality of both traits simultaneously. In 2 empirical illustrations, we identify a wide array of …

Anchoring Bias, Idiosyncratic Volatility And The Cross-Section Of Stock Returns, 2015 Louisiana Tech University
Anchoring Bias, Idiosyncratic Volatility And The Cross-Section Of Stock Returns, Cedric Tresor Luma Mbanga
Doctoral Dissertations
Ang, Hodrick, Xing and Zhang (2006) document an anomaly in the cross-section of stock returns. They show that high idiosyncratic volatility (IVOL) firms earn lower returns in the following month. Specifically, they find after sorting stocks in quintile portfolios based on the previous month's IVOL that a zero-investment portfolio long the most volatile quintile of stocks and short the least yields about -1% during the subsequent month. The evidence reported in Ang, Hodrick, Xing and Zhang (2006) is primarily puzzling because traditional asset pricing theories suggest that (i) only systematic risk should be priced, (ii) to the extent that markets …

Exploring The Impact Of Stakeholder Pressure On Environmental Management Strategies At The Plant Level: What Does Industry Have To Do With It?, Teresa K. Betts, F. Wiengarten, S. Tadisina

Stakeholder theory and empirical evidence confirm the positive relationship between stakeholder pressure and the implementation of environmental practices and strategies. However, the specific mechanisms and impact of selected stakeholder groups on environmental management strategies are relatively underexplored. In this paper, this shortcoming is addressed by exploring the impact of selected stakeholder groups on environmental management strategies taking the contingency factor industry into consideration (i.e., dynamic vs. static industries). Basing the arguments primarily on stakeholder theory, it is suggested that stakeholder pressures are perceived differently in plants in dynamic versus static industries. Similarly, it is suggested that the influence of stakeholder …

Christian leaders and managers, in light of and in response to Gods common grace, are capable of building organizational practices that foster employee engagement and promote human flourishing. In this article, we examine what it means for humans to be created in the image of God and therefore to be made to work and to use their unique gifts and strengths in such efforts. We will argue that it is precisely this constructive function of Gods common grace that is the key not only to individual-level flourishing but also to organizational-level and societal-level flourishing as well.
Three Essays On Institutions, Entrepreneurship, And Development, 2015 Old Dominion University
Three Essays On Institutions, Entrepreneurship, And Development, Adam Smith
Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration
Each of the three essays contained in this dissertation examine the relationship between institutions and entrepreneurship. The underlying theory that institutions shape entrepreneurs' outcomes is well established. However, the ways in which they do so turn out to be quite nuanced and show marked dissimilarities where low income individuals are involved in the entrepreneurship process. Each essay seeks to understand and identify what contexts individuals are more likely to participate in meaningful, development-oriented entrepreneurship. In essays I and III, the focus is on individuals at the bottom of the economic spectrum.
Essay I links opportunity entrepreneurship to the presence of …

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
The purpose of this paper was to study the effect of current regional airline attendance policies on the willingness of crewmembers to remove themselves from duty when ill or fatigued. This study sought to determine if the current punitive attendance policies are encouraging crewmembers to operate contrary to federal regulation. A survey was given to current pilots of four regional airlines with similar attendance policies. The responses were correlated with supplied demographic and experiential data. The goal of the paper was to examine the major areas of concern and suggested solutions. The overwhelming majority of respondents felt that their companies’ …

Comparison Of Nurse Staffing Based On Changes In Unit-Level Workload Associated With Patient Churn, 2015 Marquette University
Comparison Of Nurse Staffing Based On Changes In Unit-Level Workload Associated With Patient Churn, Ronda G. Hughes, Kathleen Bobay, Nicholas A. Jolly, Chrysmarie Suby
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
Aim
This analysis compares the staffing implications of three measures of nurse staffing requirements: midnight census, turnover adjustment based on length of stay, and volume of admissions, discharges and transfers.
Background
Midnight census is commonly used to determine registered nurse staffing. Unit-level workload increases with patient churn, the movement of patients in and out of the nursing unit. Failure to account for patient churn in staffing allocation impacts nurse workload and may result in adverse patient outcomes.
Method(s)
Secondary data analysis of unit-level data from 32 hospitals, where nursing units are grouped into three unit-type categories: intensive care, intermediate care, …
Perceived Workplace Racial Discrimination And Its Correlates: A Meta-Analysis, 2015 University of Wisconsin–Madison
Perceived Workplace Racial Discrimination And Its Correlates: A Meta-Analysis, María Del Carmen Triana, Mevan Jayasinghe, Jenna R. Pieper
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
We combine the interactional model of cultural diversity (IMCD) and relative deprivation theory to examine employee outcomes of perceived workplace racial discrimination. Using 79 effect sizes from published and unpublished studies, we meta-analyze the relationships between perceived racial discrimination and several important employee outcomes that have potential implications for organizational performance. In response to calls to examine the context surrounding discrimination, we test whether the severity of these outcomes depends on changes to employment law that reflect increasing societal concern for equality and on the characteristics of those sampled. Perceived racial discrimination was negatively related to job attitudes, physical health, …
Project Planning With Alternative Technologies In Uncertain Environments, 2015 Singapore Management University
Project Planning With Alternative Technologies In Uncertain Environments, Stefan Creemers, Bert De Reyck, Roel Leus
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
We investigate project scheduling with stochastic activity durations to maximize the expected net present value. Individual activities also carry a risk of failure, which can cause the overall project to fail. In the project planning literature, such technological uncertainty is typically ignored and project plans are developed only for scenarios in which the project succeeds. To mitigate the risk that an activity’s failure jeopardizes the entire project, more than one alternative may exist for reaching the project’s objectives. We propose a model that incorporates both the risk of activity failure and the possible pursuit of alternative technologies. We find optimal …
