Fala: Through The Lens Of Zarefsky’S Fourth Distinction, Oliver Vettoretti 2021 University of Richmond

Fala: Through The Lens Of Zarefsky’S Fourth Distinction, Oliver Vettoretti

Arts & Sciences Student Symposium

Attention to public image is an ongoing responsibility for a President in a free society, by virtue of the fact that public opinion and favorability influence voting inclinations. Power influences, legislatively and symbolically, and the way it is wielded defines each President. Fala served as a figurative sponge that absorbed criticism against Roosevelt and wiped it away. Although public opinion regarding Roosevelt’s politics was often very divided, Fala provided a positive distraction that shifted the public’s focus away from Roosevelt’s disability and served as a humanizing figure for adults and children alike to adore.

Inventing A Space To Speak: Ethos, Agency And United States’ Woman Suffrage Cookbooks (1886-1916), Danielle Nielsen 2021 Murray State University

Inventing A Space To Speak: Ethos, Agency And United States’ Woman Suffrage Cookbooks (1886-1916), Danielle Nielsen

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

During the last forty years of the United States’ fight for woman suffrage, a handful of suffragists wrote cookbooks sponsored by suffrage organisations. These cookbooks created a rhetorical space and ethos within and through the kitchen. Because their activism was grounded in expected feminine actions, this home-bound ethos allowed the primarily white, middle-class suffragists to simultaneously advocate for women’s suffrage in public and maintain their adherence to the Cult of True Womanhood. The arguments put forth in the cookbooks illustrate an ethos that is influenced by both personal agency and the rhetor’s gendered, physical location in the kitchen. From this …

Augustine Of Hippo: A Historical Theology Evaluation, Zachary Monte 2021 Olivet Nazarene University

Augustine Of Hippo: A Historical Theology Evaluation, Zachary Monte

The historical theology surveys that are focused on within this research paper include Greg Allison’s Historical Theology: An Introduction to Christian Doctrine, Justo González’s A History of Christian Thought, and Alister McGrath’s Historical Theology: An Introduction …

And Everything Nice, Elizabeth Black

Honors Scholars Collaborative Projects

Over the last year, due to the pandemic of COVID-19, I have had a novel opportunity to spend much of my time and energy reflecting on my connection to femininity. Across social media platforms, individuals have shared their own personal reflections about gender and this content has led me to think deeply about what femininity and masculinity mean to me. There are feminine norms and behaviors I identify with, and other conventions that I reject. Additionally, I admire forms of feminine expressions, but feel like I neither physically nor mentally can achieve them. The more time I spent with this …
