Applying Critical And Creative Thinking In Teaching Buddhism, Doan Van Thua 2010 University of Massachusetts Boston

Applying Critical And Creative Thinking In Teaching Buddhism, Doan Van Thua

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

This synthesis describes my journey preparing myself for teaching Buddhism in a way that moves beyond traditional approaches of transmitting information to students. I describe learning, teaching activities, tools, and methodologies using critical and creative thinking that can be applicable to Buddhist education. I describe some changes towards more interactive modes of teaching and progress in teaching I have made so far in my teaching Sunday school for children, in public teaching, and in giving instruction to Buddhist groups. Some further expectations and some defects in my teaching that need improvement are noted. A Buddhist is not a blind follower, …

Book Review, Professor Vibhuti Patel

The most mind-boggling issue of the 21st century has been identity politics linked with caste, ethnicity, race, religious and gender identities. It has played havoc in innumerable life situations: in personal lives, in the community, in national politics and in the global scenario. Whether is it communal violence in India, ethnic cleansing in Bosnia, apartheid in South Africa, Crisis in Afghanistan or war on Iraq, genocide in Rwanda or civil war in Sri Lanka, it is these grave socio-political and cultural contexts that makes this seminal contribution by Bhikhu Parekh worthy of debate and discussion.

Review Of Medical Miracles: Doctors, Saints, And Healing In The Modern World By Jacalyn Duffin, Nancy Schultz 2010 Salem State University

Review Of Medical Miracles: Doctors, Saints, And Healing In The Modern World By Jacalyn Duffin, Nancy Schultz

Nancy Lusignan Schultz

This book embarks on an admirable mission: to push a centuries-old, one-way conversation towards dialogue. For more than 400 years, the Roman Catholic Church has probed miracles attributed to prospective saints through the careful assembling of scientific evidence. Inquiries into miraculous healings, then, consist of a rigorous ‘trial’ that frequently includes the testimony of doctors to establish them as supernatural events. Candidates for sainthood advance or await canonization based upon such testimony. For her study of medical miracles, physician and historian Jacalyn Duffin surveyed ‘more than 1,400 miracles pertaining to 229 different canonizations and 145 beatifications from 1588 to 1999’, …

"Advance Mysore" : The Cultural Logic Of A Developmental State, Chandan Gowda 2010 National Law School of India University

"Advance Mysore" : The Cultural Logic Of A Developmental State, Chandan Gowda

Chandan Gowda

What governs state interests in development in formerly colonised societies? Conventional social science accounts stress politico-economic variables, particularly the need for capital accumulation. By means of a detailed analysis of the Bhadravati Iron Works, an ambitious industrial project in the state of Mysore in colonial India, it is demonstrated that mechanisms are also important in state-led development. Locational disadvantages, technical problems, and increased production costs made the iron plant an unprofitable venture from its inception. The state, however, kept the plant operational on grounds of its pedagogic value for local society. A claim for civilisational recognition for India’s capacity for …

Meditation And Mental Freedom: A Buddhist Theory Of Free Will, Rick Repetti 2010 CUNY Kingsborough Community College

Meditation And Mental Freedom: A Buddhist Theory Of Free Will, Rick Repetti

Publications and Research

I argue that central Buddhist tenets and meditation methodology support a view of free will similar to Harry Frankfurt’s optimistic view and contrary to Galen Strawson’s pessimistic view. For Frankfurt, free will involves a relationship between actions, volitions, and “metavolitions” (volitions about volitions): simplifying greatly, volitional actions are free if the agent approves of them. For Buddhists, mental freedom involves a relationship between mental states and “metamental” states (mental attitudes toward mental states): simplifying greatly, one has mental freedom if one is able to control one’s mental states, and to the extent one has mental freedom when choosing, one has …
