Dynamis Of Healing, Pia Sophia Chaudhari Aug 2019

Dynamis Of Healing, Pia Sophia Chaudhari

Religion

This book explores how traces of the energies and dynamics of Orthodox Christian theology and anthropology may be observed in the clinical work of depth psychology. Looking to theology to express its own religious truths and to psychology to see whether these truth claims show up in healing modalities, the author creatively engages both disciplines in order to highlight the possibilities for healing contained therein. Dynamis of Healing elucidates how theology and psychology are by no means fundamentally at odds with each other, but rather can work together in a beautiful and powerful synergia to address both the deepest needs ...

The Singular Voice Of Being [Table Of Contents], Andrew Lazella May 2019

The Singular Voice Of Being [Table Of Contents], Andrew Lazella

Philosophy

The Singular Voice of Being reconsiders John Duns Scotus’s well-covered theory of the univocity of being in light of his less explored discussions of ultimate difference. Ultimate difference is a notion introduced by Aristotle and known by the Aristotelian tradition, but one that, the book argues, Scotus radically retrofits to buttress his doctrine of univocity. Ultimate difference for Aristotle meant the last difference in a line of specific differences whereby all the preceding differences would be united into a single substance rather than remain a heapish multiplicity. LaZella argues that Scotus both broadens and deepens the term such that ...

A Theology Of Failure [Table Of Contents], Marika Rose May 2019

A Theology Of Failure [Table Of Contents], Marika Rose

Religion

“This is the best work I have ever read on Žižek in relation to theology, maybe the best such work possible. Rose’s prose style is clear and engaging, and her project significantly advances our understanding of Christian apophaticism, of Žižek’s project, and of the potential future stakes of theology for a secular world.”— Adam Kotsko, author of Neoliberalism’s Demons: On the Political Theology of Late Capital

Everyone agrees that theology has failed; but the question of how to respond to this failure is contested. Against both radical orthodoxy and deconstructive theology, Rose proposes that Christian identity is ...

Designer Fragrance: Mary’S Anointing Of Jesus Within The Network Architecture Of John 11–13, Keith L. Yoder Mar 2019

Designer Fragrance: Mary’S Anointing Of Jesus Within The Network Architecture Of John 11–13, Keith L. Yoder

Keith L. Yoder

This proposed presentation examines two sources of influence in the composition of John 12:1-11. First, its individual elements and flow of events have been influenced by the precedent Synoptic texts of Mark 14:3-11 and Luke 7:36-50. Second, it has been composed and most likely edited to fit into an integrated network of parallels and reversals embedded in the larger context of John 10:40–13:33. Pierre Moulan Beernaert first noticed in 1981 the parallel and orderly movements of John 11 and 12. Analysis here will show that many of the parallel features in John 11–12 ...

Colonizing Christianity, George E. Demacopoulos Mar 2019

Colonizing Christianity, George E. Demacopoulos

Religion

Colonizing Christianity employs postcolonial critique to analyze the transformations of Greek and Latin religious identity in the wake of the Fourth Crusade. It argues that the experience of colonization splintered the Greek community, which could not agree how best to respond to the Latin other. By offering a close reading of a handful of texts from the era of the Fourth Crusade and subsequent Latin Empire of Byzantium, this book illuminates mechanisms by which Western Christians authorized and exploited the Christian East and, concurrently, the ways in which Eastern Christians understood and responded to the dramatic shift in their political ...

"Journalists are storytellers. And in the world God created, stories matter. Jesus spoke in parables more than sermons. He knew the best way to change behavior was through narrative not lecture."

Mackie's Arguement For The Infinite Man, Abigail J. Basile Jan 2019

Mackie's Arguement For The Infinite Man, Abigail J. Basile

Quaerens Deum: The Liberty Undergraduate Journal for Philosophy of Religion

Theists and non-theists alike have toiled with the characteristics of the Judeo-Christian God and how they may or may not be contradictory with the existence of evil. Some philosophers, such as J. L. Mackie, have decided that God and evil cannot coexist, mainly because the existence of evil means that any God is unable to keep evil and suffering away from His beloved creation, and such a limited God is no God at all. But Mackie’s argument rests on flawed foundation. Mankind is necessarily finite because even the infinite God cannot do the logically impossible and create the infinite ...

The Superfluity Of Purgatory, Israel-David J.J. Healy Jan 2019

The Superfluity Of Purgatory, Israel-David J.J. Healy

Quaerens Deum: The Liberty Undergraduate Journal for Philosophy of Religion

This article is a refutation of Jerry Walls's model of Purgatory, based on God's respect of our free will and the necessity of morally significant choices. Additionally, it will show how Walls's positing of a temporal Purgatory as a means of sanctification through cooperation with God is unnecessary for the Christian in light of our earthly life and God's perfect justice and omnipotence. Finally, it will speculate as to the effects of an instantaneous purification and how it fits more clearly with traditional doctrine.

Truth-Makers And The "Grounding Objection" To Molinism, Tyler Crown Jan 2019

Truth-Makers And The "Grounding Objection" To Molinism, Tyler Crown

Quaerens Deum: The Liberty Undergraduate Journal for Philosophy of Religion

One of the most discussed topics on the nature of God, in Christian circles today, is the subject of God’s knowledge. There are a few popular positions today that are engaged in a serious debate as to what the true biblical and philosophical position on the nature of God’s knowledge is. One such position, which has become increasingly popular and has found support among many leading Christian philosophers, such as Alvin Plantinga, Thomas Flint, and William Lane Craig, is called Molinism. While Molinism does have an abundance of supporters, there are many detractors as well. Calvinist’s, Thomists ...

Against Molinism: A Refutation Of William Lane Craig's Molinism, Daniel T. Clemons Jan 2019

Against Molinism: A Refutation Of William Lane Craig's Molinism, Daniel T. Clemons

Quaerens Deum: The Liberty Undergraduate Journal for Philosophy of Religion

The debate concerning human free will, human moral culpability, and God’s sovereignty has raged for millennia within the Christian church. The recent rediscovery of the medieval philosophical theory known as Molinism brought Molinism to the fore of this debate. One major contemporary proponent of Molinism is William Lane Craig, the famous philosopher, theologian, and apologist. The purpose of this essay is to present a refutation of Craig's brand of Molinism by arguing that Craig’s Molinism relies on a flawed view of human freedom and further fails to reconcile this flawed view of human freedom with God’s ...

Deciphering Secrets Of Medieval Cathedrals: Crowdsourced Manuscript Transcriptions And Modern Digital Editions, Roger Louis Martinez-Davila, Sean Perrone, Francisco Garcia Serrano-Nebras, Maria Martin De Vidales Garcia

Bulletin for Spanish and Portuguese Historical Studies

This paper discusses Deciphering Secrets, a large-scale transcription project linked to Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) to teach Spanish paleography and the SILReST paleography method. It also addresses issues of accuracy, particularly how connecting crowdsourced transcription to class assignments will increase the accuracy of transcriptions and quickly make available to the scholarly community many manuscript transcriptions from the cathedral chapters of Burgos, Plasencia, and Toledo. It discusses the refinement of editorial techniques in migration of archival materials to digital format, creating standards for text encoding, and postulates the next steps of building databases. The paper then shows how new knowledge ...
