Parental Absence In Modern Narratives, 2019 Florida International University
Parental Absence In Modern Narratives, Mario Avalos
Undergraduate Research at FIU (URFIU) Conference
The protagonists of most fictional stories are characters whose origins often involve traumatic events that either lead to them wanting to do good in the world or wondering what their purpose really is. In many cases, this event is often something closely related to the central character’s parents. This “parental absence” can and generally does become a defining trait of the protagonist as they progress through life and, more evidently, through the immediate narrative. Considering the prevalence of this trope in television, film, literature, and other popular media, it is important to identify the recurring conflicts characters undergoing “parental absence” …

Pre-Service Teachers’ Perspectives On How The Use Of Toon Comic Books During Guided Reading Influenced Learning By Struggling Readers, 2019 Georgia State University
Pre-Service Teachers’ Perspectives On How The Use Of Toon Comic Books During Guided Reading Influenced Learning By Struggling Readers, Ewa Mcgrail, Alicja Rieger, Gina M. Doepker, Samantha Mcgeorge
Gina Doepker
The study presented in this article examines the use of comic books, specifically the TOON comic books during guided reading instruction. The instruction was provided to struggling readers by the Literacy Center at a comprehensive university in southeastern United States. What most pre-service teachers in this study agreed upon was that comic books served as an effective tool for getting their students interested in reading. Reading comic books with tutors as partners in conversation with the struggling readers in this study was also a powerful medium for facilitating students’ literacy skills development, particularly in the areas of reading fluency and …

It is no secret that Hollywood loves a good romance. What is perhaps sometimes overlooked however is how important romance and female characters are to male-dominated action films. Esma Kartal argues women and romance are deliberately placed into action films to create “romantic relief” and attract female viewers for greater crossover appeal.1 In addition to romance, Yvonne Tasker observes how women in action films serve as a witness for “the hero’s suffering” and humanity in action films.2 Finally, a classic use of women and romance in action films is that of the damsel-indistress, which continues to this day …

THE JUNK THAT 8 K-TOWN (View-Master Haiku Series 1, 2 & 3)
My first session taking photos of bush junk near the K-Town train station led to an addiction. I started to see things within images that aroused deeper contemplation. The miniature Eiffel Tower within one landscape seemed to expertly align with a gasping car belly that paid homage to Peter Dam’s The Dogs That 7 Sparrows.
Absent past owners became unconscious artists. Objects in their adopted environments became creatures with lives beyond previous incarnations. I saw things as representations, serendipitous alignments, but more importantly, a culture addicted to …

Groundhog Day At 25: Conflict And Inspiration At The Tipping Point Of Seasonal Genres, 2019 DePauw University
Groundhog Day At 25: Conflict And Inspiration At The Tipping Point Of Seasonal Genres, Wayne Glausser
Journal of Religion & Film
Groundhog Day has been recognized by leaders of many religions as an inspirational film. It tracks all the responses a person might have to the suspicion that the world has no God, design, or inherent purpose: first, transgressive self-indulgence; next, acedic depression; and finally, redemptive benevolence. During the filming, however, a conflict in vision between Harold Ramis and Bill Murray tore apart their friendship. Ramis wanted a romantic comedy founded on evolution from arrogance to selfless benevolence; Murray preferred a darker satire. Although the finished film reflects Ramis's vision of comedy--the genre of spring--Murray's satirical gestures leave traces of winter …
Touched By Grace? A Look At Grace In Bergman's Winter Light And Martin Luther's Writings, 2019 Volda University College
Touched By Grace? A Look At Grace In Bergman's Winter Light And Martin Luther's Writings, Kjartan Leer-Salvesen
Journal of Religion & Film
Ingmar Bergman holds a prominent place in the lineup of directors who have used cinema to investigate the meaning of life in a godless world. The so-called “Trilogy of God’s Silence” is often identified as the place where Bergman struggled most profoundly with core themes from the Christian faith. In Winter Light, he explores the topic of doubt, devastatingly, through a minister’s religious and existential crisis. This article, however, proposes that Martin Luther’s theology may provide resources for reappraising Bergman’s canonical film.
The Representation Of Turkish Women In James Bond Films, 2019 Exeter University, UK
The Representation Of Turkish Women In James Bond Films, Kerem Bayraktaroglu Dr
Journal of Religion & Film
While there is ample academic material exploring the cinematic role of James Bond and the “Bond Girl”, this paper chooses to focus on and examine the significance of Turkish female representations in three films set in Istanbul: From Russia with Love (Terence Young, 1963), The World Is Not Enough (Michael Apted, 1999) and Skyfall (Sam Mendes, 2012). The varying representations in these films are scrutinized to investigate how they distinguish Turkish female characters and the connotations of Istanbul over time and whether this depiction is connected with Turkey’s changing position vis-à-vis the Western world. These questions thus have historical implications …
