Ukiyo-E: How Patterns In Edo Culture Shaped "The Floating World", Vanessa Hall 2018 Brigham Young University

Ukiyo-E: How Patterns In Edo Culture Shaped "The Floating World", Vanessa Hall

BYU Asian Studies Journal

Until the seventeenth century, it was exceedingly rare to find art depicting everyday Japanese life. It was only when artists began painting scenes from the street life in Yoshiwara, the red light district in the capital city of the time, that the popular school of art known as “Ukiyo-e,” a highly fashionable style of Japanese woodblock prints, was formed (J.E.L. 1914, pp. 1–4). Emerging from an era of Chinese philosophy that was against anything Japanese, early examples of Ukiyo-e were rare until Hishikawa Moronobu discovered a way to mass-produce the art through woodblock engraving prints, which ultimately established Ukiyo-e as …

Anesaki Masaharu's Reception Of Leo Tolstoy And His Failed Attempt At Finding The Faith, Susanna Fessler PhD 2018 University at Albany, State University of New York

Anesaki Masaharu's Reception Of Leo Tolstoy And His Failed Attempt At Finding The Faith, Susanna Fessler Phd

East Asian Studies Faculty Scholarship

Among the voices opposed to the Russo–Japanese war of 1904–5 was that of the Russian writer Leo Tolstoy, who published an essay titled Bethink Yourselves, arguing against hostilities. The essay was translated and published in Japanese, but gained little traction among the intelligentsia in Japan. There was, however, one strong voice that supported Tolstoy’s ideas: that of the religious studies scholar Anesaki Masaharu. Anesaki’s response to Tolstoy’s essay was at once a commentary about the spiritual state of Japan at the turn of the century and also a veiled criticism of the Japanese government.

China And The North Korean Refugee Crisis, Christina Ahn 2018 Brigham Young University

China And The North Korean Refugee Crisis, Christina Ahn

BYU Asian Studies Journal

On 8 May 2002, shocking images of five North Korean refugees at a Japanese consulate in northeast China were captured. Although two members of the party—both men—successfully made it inside the consulate, two women and a child were dragged away from the gate of their safe haven by Chinese police (Gittings 2002). All five individuals were eventually detained—and though their fates remain unknown, it is likely they were immediately deported to North Korea, possibly the worst outcome for any North Korean defector.

The Joss House As An Insight Into 19th Century Chinese Immigration, Joshua Bernhard 2018 Brigham Young University

The Joss House As An Insight Into 19th Century Chinese Immigration, Joshua Bernhard

BYU Asian Studies Journal

“From the theater we went to the principal church or joss-house,” an anonymous author wrote about the San Francisco Chinatown for the Christian Recorder in September 1875. “Up three flights of stairs, rickety, worn, and uneven, and through the dark passages full of sickening odors, I reached a dismal, dreary, mysterious, and silent worship-house of this mysterious and superstitious people. Here and there in the temple a dim taper burned, but there were no lights in the halls, stairs, and passages, and the flickering flames only added to the oppressive and, if I may so call it ghostly feeling that …

Confucius Institutes: Expelling A Trojan Horse Or Looking A Gift Horse In The Mouth?, Michael J. Swain 2018 Brigham Young University

Confucius Institutes: Expelling A Trojan Horse Or Looking A Gift Horse In The Mouth?, Michael J. Swain

BYU Asian Studies Journal

During the past ten years, China has actively promoted its Confucius Institute (CI), a program of instruction in Chinese language and culture for college students outside of China. The program’s stated purpose is to meet an existing demand for education in Chinese language and culture, with the intent of strengthening relationships between China and other countries in order to promote a more harmonious world. However, many have viewed the CI program as nothing more than an expansion of Beijing’s soft power. Some Western institutions have even expelled CIs from their campuses. The growing concern suggests that China’s offering of what …

“Soviet Ballet In Chinese Cultural Policy, 1950s”, Eva S. Chou 2018 CUNY Bernard M Baruch College

“Soviet Ballet In Chinese Cultural Policy, 1950s”, Eva S. Chou

Publications and Research

The foundation of ballet in China was laid with the 1954 establishment of the Beijing Dance School with a division in ballet. How a Tsarist entertainment genre came to be a prized genre in socialist soil is a story with many parts. Its context is the Sino-Soviet Treaty of Friendship, Alliance, and Mutual Assistance (1950-1960), which included provisions for Soviet experts to be assigned in all areas to aid in China's national construction. In the cultural arena, this included dance, both folk and ballet. This paper covers two necessary first steps: (1) how officials at the highest level came to …

The Effect On Existence, De'Siree Fairley 2018 Longwood University

The Effect On Existence, De'siree Fairley

Spring Presentation of Undergraduate Research

The Rashomon effect is a sociological term that originated from the 1950 film Rashomon directed by Akira Kurosawa. It explains a story being told from multiple vantage points, but never gives an unbiasedly true version of the tale at its conclusion. By telling the story from multiple perspectives, characters who would originally be silenced such as the bride are given a voice. Telling the story in this format allows the audience to consider peoples’ perspectives that differ from their own. Without giving the audience the true conclusion of an incident this demands that they consider every aspect of a story …

Yuen Yan HUI 2018 Lingnan University

Yuen Yan Hui

Dissertations from all years

Ki Chau HON 2018 Lingnan University

Ki Chau Hon

Dissertations from all years

Hiu Tung CHAN 2018 Lingnan University

Hiu Tung Chan

Dissertations from all years

X-Rated And Excessively Long: Ji-Amari In Hayashi Amari's Tanka, Jon P. Holt 2018 Portland State University

X-Rated And Excessively Long: Ji-Amari In Hayashi Amari's Tanka, Jon P. Holt

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

As a fixed 31-syllable form of short poetry, Japan's tanka is one of the world's oldest forms of still-practiced poetry, with examples perhaps dating back to the fifth century. In the modern periods of Meiji (1868-1912) and Taishō (1912-1926), poets radically reformed the genre, expanding diction beyond millennium-old classical limits, thereby allowing poets to write not only about cherry blossoms and tragic love but also about things like steam trains and baseball games; although today many tanka poets in practicing circles still employ classical Japanese, many modern masters innovated the genre by skillfully blending in colloquial language. Like their modern …

The Progressive Distribution Of Sentences Containing Relative Clauses In Japanese Textbooks Of English, Risa Nakagawa 2018 Marshall University

The Progressive Distribution Of Sentences Containing Relative Clauses In Japanese Textbooks Of English, Risa Nakagawa

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Relative clauses have been researched and found to be one of the more difficult English grammar items for people who speak English as a Second Language (henceforth, ESL) and people who use English as a Foreign Language (henceforth, EFL). In particular, objective relative clauses are one of the most challenging items for English learners. (Gibson, 1998; Gordon, Hendrick, & Johnson, 2001; Mellow, 2006; Hawkins, 1994; King & Just, 1991; Otsuka & Aburai, 2003). By examining the frequency of subjective and objective relative clauses in six English textbooks which are being used in middle schools and high schools in Japan, the …

A Meaning-Based Approach To The Language Of The Toefl Test And Japanese Efl Textbooks: A Functional Analysis Of Patterns Of Lexico-Grammatical Meanings And Structures, Koshin Fukuyoshi

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The primary objective of this research project is to show varying degrees of textual and semantic contributions that semantic density and grammatical metaphors make in the way that TOEFL iBT reading sections and Japanese EFL textbooks are used. This research is conducted from two theoretical perspectives within the theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics. The first analysis is to investigate logical and semantic relationships within clause complexes in order to identify structural variations and their textual distributions. The second analysis focuses on the use of ideational and interpersonal grammatical metaphors and on the way that they further compact or untangle textual …

[Introduction To] Language As Bodily Practice In Early China: A Chinese Grammatology, Jane Geaney 2018 University of Richmond

[Introduction To] Language As Bodily Practice In Early China: A Chinese Grammatology, Jane Geaney

Bookshelf

Jane Geaney argues that early Chinese conceptions of speech and naming cannot be properly understood if viewed through the dominant Western philosophical tradition in which language is framed through dualisms that are based on hierarchies of speech and writing, such as reality/appearance and one/many. Instead, early Chinese texts repeatedly create pairings of sounds and various visible things. This aural/visual polarity suggests that texts from early China treat speech as a bodily practice that is not detachable from its use in everyday experience. Firmly grounded in ideas about bodies from the early texts themselves, Geaney’s interpretation offers new insights into three …

Hong Kong Youth Identity And Self-Presentation In The New Territories: A Qualitative Study On Letters From Youth And Teachers To An Ngo Internship Progrm, Robert W. Spires

School of Professional and Continuing Studies Faculty Publications

Hong Kong youth issues have gained increased attention in recent years, particularly in light of youth protests and political involvement. In Hong Kong, NGOs are one avenue of intervention to address youth issues. This study examines the letters of youth from the New Territories, as well as their supporting secondary school teachers, to a Hong Kong NGO in order to gain placement in an NGO internship program. These letters are explored for issues of youth identity using the lens of dialogical self theory to better understand the impact of globalization on youth identity development. How the youth and their teachers …
