Nationalism, Patriotism, And Support For The European Union, Leonie Huddy, Alessandro Del Ponte, Caitlin Davies
Political Science Faculty Articles and Research
Does attachment to a nation enhance or dampen support for the European Union (EU)? Using the 2003 and 2013 ISSP national-identity modules, we isolate and provide multi-item measures of two distinct types of national attachment—nationalism and patriotism. We find that they are positively related yet have divergent effects. We validate the measures showing that nationalism increases, and patriotism decreases, support for nationalistic policies (anti-immigration and protectionism) as expected. We then test the effects of nationalism and patriotism on EU attitudes and find that nationalism increases, and patriotism decreases, opposition to the EU. The presence of a neo-nationalist political party enhanced …

Insulated Blackness: The Cause For Fracture In Black Political Identity, Timothy E. Lewis, Sherice J. Nelson
SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
The Black Political Identity is often treated as a monolith in American politics, with interest groups and political parties employing blanket policy solutions to appease and engage African Americans. However, observations and scholarship show that Black Americans are not monolithic, possessing divergent views about social policies, so much so that some Black Americans can hold political positions that are oppositional to collective Black advancement. Therefore, this work theorizes the concept of insulated Blackness – the extent to which self-identified African Americans oppose pro-Black remedial policies and/or disagree with commonly held ideologies about the Black condition, as a result of an …

External Disruptions To Qualitative Data Collection: Addressing Risks Relating To Brexit And Researcher-Participant Rapport, Shukru Esmene, Nick Kirsop-Taylor
The Qualitative Report
In this paper we present the importance of detailing the contextual conditions of a qualitative study to highlight any potential participant-researcher tensions. We emphasize the importance of understanding context in rich detail to expose societal complexities while maintaining positive participant-research rapport. Through two cases, this paper considers that bracketing, reflexivity, and transparency can be applied to form appropriate strategies to deal with external disruptions to qualitative fieldwork. The cases draw on Brexit’s impact on two studies conducted in the United Kingdom. In so doing, we argue that time, relevance, and the individuals involved can coalesce to express varied influences on …

This research analyzes perceptions of corruption through comparative case studies of South Korea, Japan, and Singapore. It looks to political party affiliation and socioeconomic status for effects on an individual’s perception of corruption. It hypothesizes that individuals more affiliated with the ruling party will perceive the government as less corrupt and individuals that are less affiliated will perceive it as more. Socioeconomic status is split into income, social status, and education variables. Individuals with a lower income and status will perceive the government as more corrupt, while overall higher status and income individuals will perceive it as less. On the …

Examining Executive Orders And Joe Biden’S Use Of Them In His First Month, Onu Institute For Civics And Public Policy, Kennedy Aikey, Kennedy Cook, Hailey Trimpey
Critical Questions
The use of executive orders allows a President to quickly enforce new legislation. This power is a means to enable a President to promote their agenda without the need for congressional approval. In his first month, Joe Biden has used executive orders much more so than his recent predecessors. He has used this power to overturn policies by the Trump administration and has added a number of his own initiatives as well. Executive orders have been used by almost all Presidents to ensure that their time in office is used to its fullest potential.

Social Policy Responses To Covid-19 In Canada And The United States: Explaining Policy Variations Between Two Liberal Welfare State Regimes, Daniel Beland, Shannon Dinan, Philip Rocco, Alex Waddan
Political Science Faculty Research and Publications
Canada and the United States are often grouped together as liberal welfare-state regimes, with broadly similar levels of social spending. Yet, as the COVID-19 pandemic reveals, the two countries engage in highly divergent approaches to social policymaking during a massive public health emergency. Drawing on evidence from the first 5 months of the pandemic, this article compares social policy measures taken by the United States and Canadian governments in response to COVID-19. In general, we show that Canadian responses were both more rapid and comprehensive than those of the United States. This variation, we argue, can be explained by analysing …

Hate Speech Laws In Democratic Countries, Sean Lehning
Compass: An Undergraduate Journal of American Political Ideas
In contrast to the United States policy of protecting hateful expression, a survey of democracy indices indicates that dozens of democracies have hate speech laws that restrict it. This challenges assumptions of debate in the United States by showing such restrictions are feasible in a free society.
Author information: Sean Lehning is currently a law student at Northern Illinois University College of Law. This research project built on his political science background and inspired him to go to law school, while he continues to research issues of free expression and hate speech.

The Implications Of A National Popular Vote For President, Julia Jackman

Author information: Julia Jackman is a senior at Barrett, the Honors College, at Arizona State University. She is majoring in Biochemistry and Global Health and minoring in Civic and Economic Thought and Leadership. Expanding Constituency Support Through Shared Local Roots In U.S. House Primaries, Charles Hunt
Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper addresses the enduring connection of localism and place-based roots shared between many elected leaders and their constituents, which previous work has either ignored or improperly specified. I argue that representatives of the U.S. House with these roots—meaning authentic, lived experience in their districts prior to their officeholding—sustain more supportive constituencies in primary election stage. Using an original 7-point index of local biographical characteristics of incumbents seeking renomination from 2002 to 2018, I find that deeply-rooted incumbents are less than half as likely to receive a primary challenge, and on average perform more than 5 percentage points better in …
