Democratic Isolation, Thin Citizenship, And Insurrection: A Theory, Kevin G. Lorentz II, Kimberly Saks McManaway 2022 Saginaw Valley State University

Democratic Isolation, Thin Citizenship, And Insurrection: A Theory, Kevin G. Lorentz Ii, Kimberly Saks Mcmanaway

eJournal of Public Affairs

Citizens are deeply cynical of the actual institutions and exercising of representative democracy, resulting in increased isolation and extremism rather than nuanced public debate and democratic involvement. Three interrelated background conditions led to this inevitable point: the erasure of political citizenship by neoliberalism, the ability of technology (especially social media) to provide perfect filtering, and the resulting fragmenting of civic experience. In this paper we outline a theory of democratic isolation that was exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, exploited by populist politicians, and ultimately led to the January 6 insurrection.

The Temple Of Liberty As Fort Knox: The Securitization Of Democratic Space In The U.S. Capitol, Alisa J. Rosenthal, Lauren C. Bell 2022 Randolph-Macon College

The Temple Of Liberty As Fort Knox: The Securitization Of Democratic Space In The U.S. Capitol, Alisa J. Rosenthal, Lauren C. Bell

eJournal of Public Affairs

In response to security threats in the late 1990s and early 2000s, the U.S. Capitol was made less accessible to the public through a series of security upgrades, including an expansion of the Capitol Police force, new visitor registration programs, and the construction and implementation of physical barriers in and around the Capitol building itself. However, increased safety for members and staff has had consequences for the important symbolic representation that the Capitol building itself provides. As Parkinson (2009, 10) notes: “Capital cities are, by design, by usage or both, symbols of national institutions, values, myths, and norms – they …

Framing An Insurrection: A Typology Of Responses By Evangelical Leaders, Andrea C. Hatcher 2022 Sewanee: The University of the South

Framing An Insurrection: A Typology Of Responses By Evangelical Leaders, Andrea C. Hatcher

eJournal of Public Affairs

As the January 6 insurrection unfolded, religious leaders who had supported Donald Trump were set on a behavioral process of response or silence. Some religious leaders offered statements that largely condemned the violence, others promoted conspiracy theories about the actors involved, and still others offered a defensive response. This study compiles Twitter data of religious leaders from January 1 through the six-month anniversary on July 6, 2021, and finds that their responses form a typology from the conciliatory to the antagonistic. This typology is a useful framework to assess their immediate and changing responses in the contestation of January 6. …

Pertarungan Diskursif Islam Politik Dalam Wacana Penerapan Syariat Islam Pasca Orde Baru, Joko Arizal

Jurnal Wacana Politik

The Public’S Preferences In Supreme Court Rationale, William Svob 2022 University of Nebraska - Lincoln

The Public’S Preferences In Supreme Court Rationale, William Svob

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

Public approval of the Supreme Court has been decreasing in recent years. Given the literature’s consensus that Supreme Court rulings coincide with popular opinion more often than not, the decrease in popularity cannot be explained away by assuming the justices have made a series of widely despised rulings. This raises questions about what exactly the public wants the Supreme Court to do. There is an abundance of research covering the many factors that influence a justice to rule in a particular manner, but there is little written about what the average American believes should influence the Court. This study is …

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam And Egypt’S Water Security, Farah Khayry 2022 The American University in Cairo

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam And Egypt’S Water Security, Farah Khayry

The Undergraduate Research Journal

The Nile River is the backbone of Egypt. Egypt’s dry climate, lack of alternative water sources, and scarce rainfall and arable land intensify its reliance on the Nile River. In fact, the Nile River provides Egyptians with 97% of the available fresh water. Currently, Egypt is experiencing a rising water deficit due to wasteful water irrigation and consumption, global warming, and rapid population growth. The Egyptian population is increasing at an annual rate of two percent, creating a rising demand on the already dwindling Nile water supply. Another threat to the Egyptian Nile water supply is the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance …

Revisiting The Economic Voter Hypothesis: Electoral Volatility And Economic Uncertainty In Latin America (1997-2018), Charles Tibedo 2022 The University of Southern Mississippi

Revisiting The Economic Voter Hypothesis: Electoral Volatility And Economic Uncertainty In Latin America (1997-2018), Charles Tibedo

Dissertations

The large majority of studies concerning the “economic voter” have tended to follow specifications that assume retrospective, myopic, and sociotropic voter behavior. However, the magnitude of the economic effect and the conditions under which the effect is found have varied considerably across the entire body of research.

This study reframes the study of economic voting by focusing on variability in economic performance over the medium-term as a causal factor as opposed to specifying particular directions and levels of economic performance over the short-term as the necessary condition for retrospective and sociotropic voter behavior. Additionally, structural and institutional conditions associated with …

A Review Of Nepali Diaspora And Their Role In Nepal’S Development And Lessons For Developing Countries, Ambika P. Adhikari

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

United Nations data shows that the size of global diaspora had reached 281 million in 2020, and it continues to grow. Diasporas have contributed significantly to the development of their native lands through remittance, technology and knowledge transfer, philanthropy, and diplomacy. Many countries have designed policies to engage the diaspora more deeply by providing concessional citizenship and visa regimes, and attractive investment opportunities. Yet, there is room for improvement in policies and programs to enhance these prospects.

Since the 2010s, the size and expanse of Nepali diaspora has grown dramatically, the numbers perhaps reaching 800,000 in 2022 in the more …

Motives For Repression Of Chinese Ethnic Minorities: A Comparative Case Study Of Xinjiang And Tibet, Haley Grizzell 2022 Brigham Young University

Motives For Repression Of Chinese Ethnic Minorities: A Comparative Case Study Of Xinjiang And Tibet, Haley Grizzell

Undergraduate Honors Theses

While Xinjiang suffers genocide and Tibet has experienced human rights abuses for years from the Communist Party of China (CPC), government abuses in Xinjiang are far more severe, even though the regions represent similar (low) levels of separatist, terrorist violence. To understand this variation in the CPC’s treatment of its western ethnic minorities, I theorize that the actions in Xinjiang must be tied to regime survival, which in China is tied to performance. The CPC’s performance has been lacking in providing power for its urban population, which makes up its most important base of legitimacy. According to my theory, educated, …

Deploying Digitalisation And Artificial Intelligence In Sustainable Development Research, Peter Yang

Faculty Scholarship

Many industrialised countries have benefited from the advent of twenty-first century technologies, especially automation, that have fundamentally changed manufacturing and industrial production processes. The next step in the evolution of automation is the development of artificial intelligence (AI), i.e. intelligence which is demonstrated by machines and systems, which cannot only perform tasks but also work synergistically with humans and nature. Intelligent systems that can see, analyse situations and respond sensitively to real-time cues, from human gestures and facial expressions to pedestrians crossing a busy street, will reshape transportation, precision agriculture, biodiversity conservation, environmental modelling, public health, construction and manufacturing, as …

This study employs the structural equation modeling (SEM) approach to construct the proposed model. The stability of SEM’s algorithm is checked using a reliability test. The performance of SEM …

Interpreting 9/11: Religious Or Political Event?, Fadime Apaydin 2022 University of South Florida

Interpreting 9/11: Religious Or Political Event?, Fadime Apaydin

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Terrorism or violence can be triggered by a variety of circumstances, including the religious, cultural, political, or economic conditions of the social environment, as well as the perpetrator’s personal characteristics. However, studies conducted in the aftermath of 9/11 have largely described the attacks as religious events, arguing that religion inherently causes violence or that religion is the main motivation for violence. The primary argument for the approach adopted by such studies is that secular institutions are inclined to be less violent than religious ones. A second approach, on the other hand, fundamentally opposes the arguments that led to describing the …

Journal of Nonprofit Innovation

“Leadership is all about changing the order of things. Machiavelli said, ‘There is nothing so difficult or so dangerous as to undertake to change the order of things.’ And that is true. It is difficult, and it is sometimes dangerous, because people resist and people are afraid. And that is why only leaders can drive change.”

“Management is the production of acceptable results within known constraints and conditions; very important. But management is not leadership.” https://ecorner.stanford.edu/videos/the-difference-between-management-and-leadership/,

Periyar: A Study In Political Atheism, Karthick Ram Manoharan 2022 National Law School of India University

Periyar: A Study In Political Atheism, Karthick Ram Manoharan

Books

This volume is a thematic study of the work and ideas of Periyar E. V. Ramasamy. It analyses Periyar's emancipatory, irreverent and revolutionary critique of religion using the idea of 'political atheism'. Drawing extensively from Periyar's own writings, contemporary accounts of Dravidian politics and the theory of Anarchism, this groundbreaking study provides a new perspective on Periyar's engagements with religion, caste and their collaborations with the state. Periyar is not just a new appraisal of 'Periyarism' but a reminder of its continuing significance in global conversations on justice, equality and liberty.
