The Regenarrative: How To Change The Story In Order To Change The Future, S. Rose Bigheart O'Leary 2024 Dartmouth College

The Regenarrative: How To Change The Story In Order To Change The Future, S. Rose Bigheart O'Leary

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Abstract

In the era of Climate Change, many are concerned that the end of the Anthropocene, or the end of the era of human life on Earth, is upon us. Western European colonialism and its subsequent systems (settler-colonialism, colonial-capitalism, and globalization - sometimes termed “neocolonialism”) have all been implicated in contributing to unsustainable behaviors linked to accelerating climate change. In searching for possible solutions, some have called for listening to Indigenous Peoples, citing ethics of sustainability found among many Indigenous cultures. However, the cultural products of settler-colonialism are still dominant in ways that do not allow for Indigenous worldviews to …

The Contribution Of The White Working-Class Toward Their Own Political And Economic Disenfranchisement, Dana De Castro 2024 University of Central Florida

The Contribution Of The White Working-Class Toward Their Own Political And Economic Disenfranchisement, Dana De Castro

Honors Undergraduate Theses

The purpose of this study was to answer the following question: why are the white working-class in America complicit in their own political and economic disenfranchisement? Moreover, this paper utilizes two time periods in American history, specifically, the Antebellum period and the Jim Crow era, and examines the white working-class’s behavioral pattern in these periods with the historical context in mind that took place in each of the eras. Through an analysis of the two studies, it is revealed that the white working-class has long been disenfranchised politically and economically. The white working-class of the past (specifically, the Antebellum period …

Civic Engagement & Health Outcomes: Poor And Black America, Robert Louis Durbin 2024 Northern Illinois University

Civic Engagement & Health Outcomes: Poor And Black America, Robert Louis Durbin

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This research explores the implications of state electoral climate on the health of vulnerable groups in America, especially that of Black and low-income Americans. This research uses the Cost of Voting Index (COVI), a measure of state laws related to voting, as a proxy for the potential for civic engagement. Specifically, I contend that a more restrictive state electoral climate hampers individuals’ potential for civic engagement, in turn increasing social isolation and reducing their exposure to useful health information. This reduced community education then contributes to worse health outcomes for individuals living in states with a more restrictive electoral climate. …

Why Terrorism Varies In Indonesia, Titik Firawati 2024 Northern Illinois University

Why Terrorism Varies In Indonesia, Titik Firawati

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation studies when, why, and how local religious conflicts escalate to campaigns of terrorist violence. To do so, I examine two most-similar cases in Indonesia: Ambon and Poso. Each experienced significant local conflict between Christians and Muslims in the early 2000s. But while a peace treaty in Ambon in 2002 was largely successful, a similar treaty in Poso failed, and violence actually escalated into an organized campaign of terrorism against Christians. To understand why violence escalated to terrorism in one case, but not the other, I conducted six months of field research, including 98 interviews with original interviews with …

The Influence Of Media Usage On The Outcome Of Social Movement Campaigns In Southeast Asia, Rothsethamony Seng 2024 Northern Illinois University

The Influence Of Media Usage On The Outcome Of Social Movement Campaigns In Southeast Asia, Rothsethamony Seng

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Does the use of media strategies help social movements or mass protest movements in Southeast Asia achieve their goals? The prominent study in this area argues that social media, in particular, has done more harm than good for grassroots movements. Tufekci (2017) argues that social media provides little help compared to the regime. I argue that social media helps the movement through three important areas, including (1) amplifying the messages of the movements to shape public opinions and counter propaganda and misleading information from the government, (2) facilitating and mobilizing protestors to coordinate virtual or physical protests, sustaining the momentum, …

Three Papers On The Investigation Of Epistemic Legitimacy Among Colombian Regulators, Carolina Velandia Hernández 2024 Northern Illinois University

Three Papers On The Investigation Of Epistemic Legitimacy Among Colombian Regulators, Carolina Velandia Hernández

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation explores the intricate dynamics of how policy actors, as members of distinct epistemic communities, form, legitimize, and rationalize their preferences and behaviors. These epistemic communities provide a foundation for understanding the origins of beliefs and the mechanisms that drive cooperation, coordination, and advocacy among policy actors. By focusing on regulators within the energy policy subsystem in Colombia, this study sheds light on the significance of epistemic community membership in shaping beliefs about the human-nature relationship.

Additionally, this dissertation makes a methodological contribution by employing interpretative techniques for interviewing and data collection. It emphasizes the role of positionality, particularly …

The Expansion Of Social Assistance Programs: The Politics Of Development In Bangladesh, Sumaya Tamanna 2024 Northern Illinois University

The Expansion Of Social Assistance Programs: The Politics Of Development In Bangladesh, Sumaya Tamanna

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Why do authoritarian regimes in the global south expand social assistance programs when electoral competition is absent? What are the driving factors behind their willingness to adopt and expand pro-poor social assistance programs? To answer this question in the context of Bangladesh, I did a secondary qualitative analysis to unfold the puzzle of social assistance expansion in Bangladesh. I explored existing literature and tested those in the case of Bangladesh by analyzing existing literature on Bangladesh, as well as data and documents in order to solve the puzzle. I find that, even though electoral competition is absent, the current regime …

Vote Like A Man, Act Like A Woman: An Exploratory Analysis Of The Political Behavior Of Contemporary American Conservative Women, Alex Hawkins 2024 Eastern Illinois University

Vote Like A Man, Act Like A Woman: An Exploratory Analysis Of The Political Behavior Of Contemporary American Conservative Women, Alex Hawkins

Masters Theses

This article seeks to establish a baseline for the political behavior and participation levels of Republican women by measuring six political activities. Using CCES 2020 self-selected survey data, the six political activities measured were: made a political donation, attended a march or protest, attended a political meeting, worked on a campaign, contacted a public official, displayed political signage. The political behavior and participation levels of Republican women were compared to the levels of Republican men and non-Republican women. This comparison was established to provide further insight into the political behaviors of Republican women, including the relationship between gender and partisanship …

Locke(D) In A Vicious Cycle, Leah Litman 2024 University of Michigan Law School

Locke(D) In A Vicious Cycle, Leah Litman

Reviews

The Supreme Court’s recent opinion in Securities and Exchange Commission v. Jarkesy invalidated the SEC’s mechanism for adjudicating fraud claims seeking civil penalties on the ground that the adjudications violated the Seventh Amendment. To explain that conclusion, the Court invoked, among other sources…Baron de Montesquieu (who was quoted by Alexander Hamilton after all!) and William Blackstone. Debates about constitutional interpretation are often peppered with references to a few Enlightenment thinkers, such as Montesquieu, Blackstone, and John Locke. Indeed, even nonconstitutional interpretation debates are as well; in the Court’s recent decision overturning Chevron deference, Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo, Justice …

Displaced Worker Angst And Far Right Populism, Thomas E. Lambert 2024 University of Louisville

Displaced Worker Angst And Far Right Populism, Thomas E. Lambert

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Background

Nothing causes more anguish and frustration than downward social mobility such as that experienced by less-educated workers and especially by displaced workers. Those who lose economic status lose more than income because they become so socially isolated that they are further frustrated through loneliness (Case and Deaton 2020). Hanna Arendt points out that lonely men are susceptible to authoritarian influence (1973, p. 475).

There is yet another aspect to the downward social mobility of low skilled men, namely that they are losing ground not only relative to social norms but also relative to the wages of low-skilled women. In …

The Challenges Of Decoding Russian Coercion, Cynthia A. Roberts 2024 CUNY Hunter College

The Challenges Of Decoding Russian Coercion, Cynthia A. Roberts

Publications and Research

This review essay critically examines cultural explanations of deterrence and coercion, focusing on Dmitry Adamsky’s The Russian Way of Deterrence as the most important recent effort to explain Russian strategic behavior through the lens of strategic culture. While recognizing the book’s considerable strengths in describing Russian concepts, terminology, and practices of deterrence and coercion, the essay questions how much explanatory leverage culture actually provides. It argues that cultural approaches risk over-complexifying the Russian case while under-specifying causal relationships, and asks why distinctive strategic cultures do not produce greater variation in coercive behavior and outcomes. The essay contrasts cultural interpretation with …

Sister City International Project Exchange: Providing Resources For Migrants, Claire Saldaña

Honors Program Theses and Research Projects

Migrants continuously enter the United States through the southern border and overwhelm Texas border cities’ resources. Many migrants entering U.S. have travel plans; however, they need basic resources to continue their journey. San Antonio has one of the best migrant resource center models in the country but are increasingly overwhelmed with the continuous surges. This proposal focuses on the City of San Antonio, as it is the main port of transportation for migrants to the rest of the U.S. Through the Sister City International program San Antonio will create a letter of intent for an exchange program. The creation of …

Preserving Paradise: A Case Study Of Public Attitudes And Its Impact On The Conservation Of The Indian River Lagoon Watershed, Zanielle Wells

Honors Undergraduate Theses

The Indian River Lagoon (IRL) is an important estuary along Florida’s east coast. It is known for its ongoing water quality issues attributed to human activity in the watershed, which has resulted in extensive restoration and conservation efforts. This study researches the relationship between public perception and sentiment toward sustainable development initiatives and how they influence conservation and restoration in the Indian River Lagoon watershed. Twelve semi-structured interviews were conducted with IRL experts who work in the government, academia, nonprofit, or nongovernmental sectors to discuss public sentiment and engagement practices within the watershed. The responses were analyzed using a causal …

Xenophobia, The Global War On Terror, And Refugee Policy In The United States, Canada, And Western Europe, Chloe Lopez 2024 University of Florida

Xenophobia, The Global War On Terror, And Refugee Policy In The United States, Canada, And Western Europe, Chloe Lopez

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Xenophobia has oscillated in intensity in the United States, Canada, and Western Europe since the late eighteenth century. This pattern of fear of immigrants and refugees being harbingers of violence and criminal activity establishes itself throughout the modern history of the United States, Canada, and Western Europe despite much evidence to the contrary. In the twentieth century, the prevailing argument surrounding the creation of xenophobia centered around economics. This divergence from twenty-first century patterns can be attributed to the Global War on Terror increasing alienation of refugees and immigrants through mythmaking and the structural securitization of immigration in the United …
