Ford Lake in an 800-acre dammed reservoir on the Huron River some 35 miles west of Detroit. The 10-mile shoreline was investigated in the field as well as with the use of soil data and aerial photographs. The investigation of the shoreline reveals that shoreline erosion and mass wasting are related to high erodible soil types. The shoreline is being urbanized mainly with multifamily housing, causing a removal of the deciduous hardwood vegetation which has led to increased runoff. Shoreline owners have reinforced the shoreline to combat severe erosion. It is recommended that a reevalution be undertaken to provide development …

Our small club had an interesting and enjoyable year. In late October GTU sponsored a geography quiz in the student union to test students' knowledge of geography and draw their attention to the upcoming Geography Awareness Week. The Friday before Geography Awareness Week, we published some of the results of the quiz and promoted geography as an interesting and rewarding career. During Geography Awareness Week, we again set up a table in the union and highlighted different aspects of geography and promoted our department.

Varying rates of till deformation as a function of surface topography and direction of continental ice advance are linked to pattern and form variations in drumlins. Five transects are examined morphometrically . Transects are selected on the basis of their slope and direction of ice advance. A hypothesis based on variable rates of clast lodgement and till deformation accounts for most of drumlins' spatial characteristics. The Cayuga Trough funnelled most of the ice southward and the large amounts of till mobilized contribute to high drumlin densities. The observed increase in drumlin elongation is linked to local ice surging. Away from …

This paper reports on the procedures and problems associated with the development of a digital cartographic data base for the creation of small scale, small size locator maps. These locator maps are used as inserts to accompany thematic and planimetric maps. They are generally very simple outlines of coastlines or political boundaries, but may also contain boxed or shaded areas, graticules, and occasionally, thematic content. Several cartographic data sets were evaluated and three were chosen for use to cover a map scale range of 1 :800 million to 1: 30 million. The data sets were then reviewed and edited. Finally, …

The agenda of the General Assembly of the United Nations has been dominated by Cold War battles between the United States and the Soviet Union during much of the organization's 45-year history. Do countries who support the United States on votes associated with the Cold War receive larger quantities of U.S. foreign assistance? This paper examines two hypotheses pertaining to this question with regard to the voting behavior of 12 Central American and Caribbean countries between 1970 and 1987. An outburst flood from a failed beaver dam occurred in September, 1987, in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. The flood event tilted, scarred, and traumatized trees along the banks of Millstone Creek. Dendrogeomorphological techniques were employed to verify that the flood event was recorded in the annual rings of these trees, and to produce an index cutoff value for ring responses. Because of its recency, a very high number of sampled tree-rings recorded the flood; however, older floods are less likely to be so strongly recorded in the sampled trees, diminishing the usefulness of the index value concept. This study assesses the ability of Eastern Michigan University students to correlate selected newspaper headlines with the actual location of the associated stories. For this purpose, a stratified random sample of 100 students was selected from students enrolled in classes offered by the Military Science Department. A 25-item test was given to 25 freshmen , sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The students' scores averaged 76.7 percent. Of the variables examined, significant differences in test results were obtained when comparing males to females, the four academic classes, and groupings based upon ACT scores. The Eta Gamma Chapter of GTU sponsored a number of events that were well attended by both student members and faculty guests. The Chapter hosted a coffee hour for the new department faculty member, Dr. Michael Broadway. Geography Careers Night was arranged by Eta Gamma as part of the 1989 Geography Awareness Week celebration. Two Geneseo geography graduates presented their views on job opportunities in the field, followed by questions from a panel of GTU officers.

An analysis of federal rules for siting hazardous waste treatment, storage, and disposal facilities (TSDFs) reveals that minimal consideration is directed towards the potential for groundwater pollution during transport. Hazardous substances are being introduced to groundwater annually from spills during shipping. Federal regulations do include stringent aquifer protection measures for the immediate facilities' sites; however, little attention has been paid to the hydrogeological sensitivity of the highway and railway corridors. The north-central United States, namely Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin, experienced a severe drought during 1987-88 crop year. Monthly precipitation data of the crop year (September through August) were analyzed for 58 stations over the period 1964-65 through 1987-88 to quantify the intensity and extent of this drought. With the exception of a narrow strip in northern Minnesota the entire study area was affected by this drought. More than 92 percent of the stations experienced seven to eleven months of precipitation deficiency during this drought. Approximately 50 percent of the study area experienced precipitation deficiency of over 30 percent. South-central Iowa …

Some 4,500 centennial farms were documented in Michigan at the end of the 1980 decade. Qualifications for centennial farm status are somewhat subjectively interpreted. However, the most important criterion is based on families and descendants occupying farms for 100 years or more. Some farms are being decertified when the continuous ownership is broken by sale of the property. The necessity to sell is attributed in part to declining farm revenue, aging farmers who lack heirs and urban land pressure. The Abandoned Shipwreck Act of 1987 is perhaps the most important piece of recent federal legislation enacted affecting underwater archaeology and the preservation of underwater historic sites. With this short statute, the federal government vested title to virtually all historic shipwrecks in navigable water to the states. Maine experienced its highest water level ever recorded on January 13, 2024, just two days after another winter storm with an even higher storm surge on a smaller tide. In this study, we aimed to quantify the impact of these storms along five shorelines in York County, Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport, Fortunes Rocks, Middle, Biddeford Pool, and Hills, in Biddeford, and Camp Ellis, Ferry, and Bayview beaches in Saco.
