Japanese host clubs are a phenomenon not many people understand in America. If one looks deeper into Japanese culture while explaining the differences in similar sub-cultures hosts are identified with one will learn that a host is not a sex worker. Hosts resemble a pseudopsychologist, healer or as they refer to themselves 'chivalrous men.' To understand how Japanese hosts began, one must understand Japanese culture. Japanese people must hide who they really are while trying to become accepted among their peers. This is done by using the concepts of ninjo and giri. The rest is accomplished by honne and tatamae. …

Early Chinese Faience And Glass Beads And Pendants, Simon Kwan

The earliest Chinese beads and pendants were composed of faience and appeared during the early Western Zhou period, around the 11th Century B.C. True glass began to be made about the time of the Spring and Autumn period (771-467 B.C.). An amazing variety of beautiful "dragonfly-eye beads" appeared in China during the Warring States period (475-221 B.C.), but these were imported and not local products. The complex eye beads were replaced during the Han dynasty (206 B.C.-A.D. 220) by small, plain glass beads generally intended to be strung together. Chinese Bead Curtains, Past And Present, Valerie Hector

Relatively little is known about how beads were combined to form larger structures in China. To address this situation, this paper focuses on Chinese bead curtains. Adopting an approach that is broad rather than deep and empirical rather than theoretical, it collates evidence from the textual, material, oral, and pictorial records to consider bead curtains from various perspectives. To begin, this study defines bead curtains as textiles, door and window ornaments, screens, and types of beadwork. It then discusses bead curtains of the imperial era (221 B.C.-A.D. 1911) as they are referenced in the Chinese textual record from the 4th …

There is no other North American fur trade establishment whose longevity and historical significance can rival that of York Factory. Located in northern Manitoba, Canada, at the base of Hudson Bay, it was the Hudson's Bay Company's principal Bay-side trading post and depot for over 250 years. The existing site of York Factory is the last of a series of three posts, the first of which was erected in 1684. Completed in 1792, York Factory III functioned as the principal depot and administrative center for the great Northern Department until the 1860s when its importance began to wane. It then …

Any study of ethnicity, especially diasporic ethnicity, must somehow engage with the question of "authenticity," and Irish studies is no different. Irish cultural identity is performed on stage (with Irish plays, dance, and music), at St. Patrick's Day celebrations (witness the parade in New Orleans where Irish Spring soap, potatoes, cabbages, and ramen noodles are tossed from floats), in markets (where shamrock boxer shorts, Guinness hats, and Celtic cross snow-globes are sold), and in pubs. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to describe culturally responsive methodology as a way to develop researchers. The aim is to illuminate the dimensions of culturally responsive methodology such as cultural and epistemological pluralism, deconstruction of Western colonial traditions of research, and primacy of relationships within culturally responsive dialogic encounters. An overarching question is: “How can we maintain the original integrity of both participants and researchers and their respective cultures and co-construct at the same time something new?”

Situating Street Kids: An Ethnography Of Nomadic Street Kids In Portland, Oregon, Elizabeth Delise

Homelessness in the United States has been widely researched in the social sciences. Only within the last 20 years have ethnographic studies focused on street kids, a youth subculture. Some of this work has emphasized the transience of street kid lifeways and problematized the street kid lifestyle, an approach that has rendered street kids as victims. More recently, social scientists have refocused their analytic lens on the ways that street kids are agents of their own actions and understood only within the context of past events that shaped decisions to live on the street. From the beginning of The Indiana State Normal Teaching College women have been intrinsic to the success and progress of the institution and played an important role. Many of these roles reflect the progress of women’s rights throughout the country. From suffrage to affirmative action, women have shaped ISU. It is impossible to curate every story and event in the history of women at ISU, but through extensive archival research their voices are now heard again. Here is their story.
