Placebo Effects Of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation On Motor Skill Acquisition, Nicole K. Haikalis, Andrew Hooyman, Peiyuan Wang, Ayoub Daliri, Sydney Y. Schaefer

Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique used in neurorehabilitation to enhance motor training. However, its benefits to motor training can be difficult to reproduce across research studies. It is possible that the observed benefits of tDCS are not directly related to the intervention itself but rather to the brain-mind responses elicited by the treatment context, commonly known as a placebo effect. This study investigated the presence of a placebo effect of tDCS on motor training and explored potential underlying factors. Sixty-eight participants who were right-handed were randomly assigned to active tDCS, sham tDCS, or a …

Early Mobilization In Critical Care: A Benchmark Study, Monica Paige Voelkel 2023 University of Texas at Tyler

Early Mobilization In Critical Care: A Benchmark Study, Monica Paige Voelkel

MSN Capstone Projects

Critically ill patients often have complex injuries to multiple organ systems creating barriers to mobilization and a decrease in functional status (Bergbower et al., 2020). Early mobilization (EM) in hospitalized patients has shown to improve patient outcomes and decrease length of stay (LOS) (Bergbower et al., 2020). The link between EM and LOS is one that warrants further investigation with the PICOT question: In critically ill patients (P), how does early mobilization (I), compared to standard mobility (C) improve patient outcomes (O) over a three-month period (T)? The purpose of this paper is to discuss the rationale for the benchmark …

Approximate Entropy And Velocity Of Center Of Pressure To Determine Postural Stability: A Pilot Study, Natalie Tipton, Gordon Alderink, Samhita Rhodes

Open Access Publishing Support Funded Articles

The body’s postural control system is responsible for responding to perturbations of balance and keeping the body upright. During quiet standing, the center of pressure oscillates about the center of mass, counteracting imbalances. These oscillations can be analyzed to determine the degree of stability, which could be helpful in quantifying the effects of brain injuries. In this research, the center of pressure was recorded for stances with feet together and feet tandem, with eyes opened and eyes closed, in neurotypical participants. These signals were analyzed using indices of approximate entropy and velocity to determine how sensitive the measures were in …
