Predicting Access Barriers And Facilitators To Pediatric Specialty Care Among Children With Complex Chronic Conditions, Elisabeth Vestal

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Children with complex chronic conditions (CCC) face healthcare inequities when accessing pediatric specialty care. Social or economic barriers may exacerbate the challenges faced by families with a child/children with CCC and include increased geographical distance to specialty services, familial poverty, inadequate neighborhood resources, and food insecurity. Understanding how social and economic factors may impact equitable access to care are essential in improving health outcomes for children with CCC. The first manuscript in this compendium is an integrative review focused on the barriers and facilitators of accessing pediatric specialty care for rural dwelling children with CCC. The second manuscript presents a …

Effects Of Educational Intervention On Asthmatic Children, Zoe Coggins 2024 Dominican University of California

Effects Of Educational Intervention On Asthmatic Children, Zoe Coggins

Nursing | Student Research Posters

Abstract

Children are more vulnerable to asthmatic symptoms due to the physiological immaturity of their respiratory systems. Therefore, irritants are deemed more hazardous for the pediatric population. Pollution is a growing health concern, and within the literature review, several approaches to the measurement of the impact of low air quality and educational interventions are discussed. The themes identified in the literature review are increased risk of pollution-induced exacerbation due to age, behavior, and residential proximity to emission-producing facilities. The review of the literature demonstrated how pollution is a growing public health concern, especially among the pediatric population. Interventions, reviewed in …

A Nurse-Driven Screening Process To Increase Icu Palliative Care Utilization, Sara L. Stock

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Project Abstract

Purpose

A scholarly project aimed to increase palliative care by 25% for intensive care unit patients in eight weeks by integrating nurse-driven screening process into multidisciplinary rounds.

Background

Palliative care provides valuable mental, emotional, and spiritual support for patients and families. These benefits are available to any patient with a disease process causing symptoms affecting quality of life. Palliative care is falsely equated with hospice care, leading to further delay. The original referral model relied only on intensivist identification of eligibility The project was implemented in a 20-bed medical and surgical ICU in a community hospital in the Houston area. …

Improving Adherence Amongst Post-Stroke Patients In The Outpatient Setting, Olivea Adetu

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Project Abstract

PURPOSE

This quality improvement (QI) project aimed to enhance medication adherence and follow-up rates through structured, personalized phone calls to recently discharged post-stroke patients. The project was implemented at an outpatient neuroscience clinic in Greater Houston.

BACKGROUND

Low medication adherence and poor attendance at the first neurology follow-up appointment among post-stroke patients contribute to increased morbidity and higher risk of recurrent stroke. Despite receiving discharge instructions, many patients do not consistently take their prescribed medications or attend their initial neurology visit.

METHODOLOGY

Guided by the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle, this project engaged a medical assistant to call recently discharged stroke patients …

Student Voice: Perceptions Of Sense Of Belonging And Involvement Among Underrepresented Prelicensure Nursing Students, Maria Peña

Dissertations (1934 -)

ABSTRACT STUDENT VOICE: PERCEPTIONS OF SENSE OF BELONGING AND INVOLVEMENT AMONG MINORITIZED PRELICENSURE NURSING STUDENTS Maria Y. Peña, MSN, RN, CNE Marquette University Efforts like holistic review admissions by nursing programs to create a more ethnically diverse student body have led to increased enrollment of students with underrepresented ethnic and cultural social identities. However, these students continue to experience higher attrition rates compared to their White, middle-class peers. Although both sense of belonging and student involvement are positively correlated with academic success, limited research explores these constructs together from the perceptions of students with underrepresented ethnic and cultural social identities …

Peer Counseling For Perinatal Depression In Low- And Middle-Income Countries: A Scoping Review, Alexander Cuncannon, Kailyn Seitz, Aneel Signh, Aliyah Dosani 2024 University of Calgary, Canada

Peer Counseling For Perinatal Depression In Low- And Middle-Income Countries: A Scoping Review, Alexander Cuncannon, Kailyn Seitz, Aneel Signh, Aliyah Dosani

Brain and Mind Institute

Perinatal depression is associated with adverse maternal, newborn and child health outcomes. Treatment gaps and sociocultural factors contribute to its disproportionate burden in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Task-sharing approaches, such as peer counseling, have been developed to improve access to mental health services. We conducted a scoping review to map the current literature on peer counseling for perinatal women experiencing depression in LMICs. We searched CINAHL, MEDLINE, APA PsycINFO, Global Health and EMBASE for literature with no date limits. We included 73 records in our analysis, with most being systematic reviews and meta-analyses, randomized controlled trials and qualitative studies. …

Publications

Shared trauma (ST) is a term historically applied to social work experiences, but other healthcare professionals (HCP) also experience ST. With the occurrence of COVID-19, ST has impacted HCP globally and has led to new discoveries and more questions regarding its scope, impact and duration. This article aims to explore the concept of ST applied to nurses in light of COVID-19 using the Rogers and Knafl Evolutionary Model for Concept Analysis. Further examination and evolution of ‘shared trauma’, particularly during COVID-19, has led to the development of an adapted model to explore the implications of ST on health-related outcomes for …
