Biomechanics Of Lower Limbs During Walking Among Candidates For Total Knee Arthroplasty With And Without Low Back Pain, David R. Burnett, Naira H. Campbell-Kyureghyan, Robert V. Topp, Peter M. Quesada
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
The effect of joint pathologies, such as unilateral knee osteoarthritis (UKOA) or low back pain (LBP), on bilateral gait symmetry has gained increased attention during the past decade. This study is the first to compare gait patterns between patients with UKOA and LBP in combination and with UKOA only. Temporal, kinematic, and kinetic variables were measured bilaterally during gait stance phase in 31 subjects with UKOA and LBP (Group I) and 11 subjects with only UKOA (Group II). Group I patients exhibited less hip rotation in the affected limb (A) than in the nonaffected (NA) limb during walking in contrast …

Patient Perceptions Of Bedpan Usage And Comfort Levels, Emily Kay Schlachter
Honors Theses and Capstones
While it may be seemingly obvious, there is very little data on patient perceptions of bedpan use. In order to create a better bedpan, there needs to be evidence as to why it is necessary. The objective of this study is to explore patient experiences of bedpan use in order to define their perceptions of comfort levels. The literature shows that patients are physically and emotionally uncomfortable when using the bedpan, find the device unpleasant, and are not receiving the necessary levels of education and compassion from their care staff. A mixed methods study using a descriptive quantitative design was …

Improving Compliance With Clinical Practice Guidelines To Reduce Urinary Tract Infection In Long Term Care, Charman L. Miller
Doctor of Nursing Practice Program Projects
This evidence-based clinical change project addressed the clinical problem trigger of increased rates of urinary tract infections and related unplanned discharges in a rural Ohio nursing center. The clinical change involved the implementation of a nursing-driven protocol for suspected Urinary Tract Infection (sUTI) based on the American Medical Director’s Association Clinical Practice Guideline: Common Infections. An interdisciplinary team approach to evidence-based clinical change was utilized through use of the Iowa Model of Evidence-based Practice to Promote Quality Care. Both the process and the intervention were evaluated through analysis of outcome data including rates of urinary tract infection, compliance with the …

Use Of Change Agent To Facilitate Implementation Of Personalized Health Plans, Colleen Miranda
Doctor of Nursing Practice Program Projects
In 2015, the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention reported that the most common, costly but preventable health problems are heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, obesity, and arthritis. Literature shows preventable chronic diseases have increased in the current healthcare system. Healthcare leaders are calling for a change in the current faulty healthcare delivery system to personalized healthcare. A patient-centered approach focuses on the health gains that can be made in the prevention and treatment of chronic disease with a higher level of patient engagement.
The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) is advocating patient-centered care (PCC) to focus on the health gains …

Perception And Use Of Communication Care Plans By Certified Nursing Assistants In Nursing Homes: The Role Of Professional Support, Christen G. Page
Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences
The majority of individuals in nursing homes have cognitive-communication impairments which impact quality of care because direct care providers, certified nursing assistants, (CNAs) are unsure how to respond to resident’s communication behaviors. One intervention that facilitates staff-resident communication in nursing homes is communication plans; however, the research to date about communication plans has not specifically involved CNAs.
The purpose of this study, using a grounded theory qualitative approach, was to describe development, implementation and evaluation of communication care plans (CCPs) for residents with cognitive-communication impairments in nursing homes by CNAs who did and did not receive professional support. Communication care …

Problem
The School of Nursing at Southern Adventist University offers both Associate of Science and Bachelor of Science in nursing degrees. A majority of the students who sit for the NCLEX-RN are associate of science in nursing graduates. The pass rate dropped from 94.9% in 2010 to 88.8% in 2011. The pass rate went up to 93.3% in 2012, but dropped again by almost 5% in the following year, and to an all-time low of 76.5% in 2014.
Unlike most AS nursing program student populations in the nation, the majority of SAU students are young and considered traditional-age college students. …

Relationship Between Nurses' Job Satisfaction And Quality Of Healthcare They Deliver, Samuel Aron
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
The purpose of this study was to examine nurses’ perception of the relationship between job satisfaction and quality of care they deliver, and barriers to a quality care. Data for this cross-sectional study was collected using a paper survey developed by the researcher. This 28-item questionnaire assessed nurses’ perception of the relationship between job satisfaction and the quality of care they deliver, and factors that affect the delivery of a quality care and job satisfaction. The questionnaire was distributed to 80 nurses (RNs, LPNs, and nursing assistants) who work in direct patient care at a small Minnesota hospital. Analysis included …

Helping Mothers Defend Their Decision To Breastfeed, Kandis Natoli
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The United States has established breastfeeding as an important health indicator within the Healthy People agenda. Healthy People target goals for breastfeeding initiation, duration, and exclusivity remain unmet. The US Surgeon General's Office reports that lack of knowledge and widespread misinformation about breastfeeding are barriers to meeting Healthy People goals. Breastfeeding mothers are vulnerable to messages that cast doubt on their ability to breastfeed. Very little research has examined specific approaches to help people resist negative messages about health beliefs and behaviors. The objective of this quasi-experimental study was to test an intervention designed to help mothers defend their breastfeeding …

The Impact Of Relational Coordination And The Nurse On Patient Outcomes, Fanya Dejesus
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Healthcare quality remains a significant issue due to fragmentation of care in our complex U.S. healthcare systems. While coordination of care is foundational to healthcare quality as well as identified as a National Priority, fragmentation and uncoordinated care continues to afflict our systems. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between relational coordination and adverse nurse sensitive patient outcomes, namely hospital acquired pressure ulcers, patient falls with injury, catheter- associated urinary tract infection, and central line-associated blood stream infection. A retrospective correlational survey design using cross sectional data was used to conduct this quantitative study. An electronic …

The current study aims to assess tracheal suctioning practices among health care practitioners; nurses, critical care technicians and physiotherapist. Employing literature review as the methodology, multiple databases were searched focusing on three phases of tracheal suctioning (a) the pre suctioning phase, (b) the suctioning phase, (c) the post suctioning phase and complications related to tracheal suctioning. It was concluded that to provide quality care it is important that the evidence based practice guidelines should be followed.
