Chiildhood Bullying: Assessment Practices And Predictive Factors Associated With Assessing For Bullying By Health Care Providers, Vicki Hensley
Theses and Dissertations--Nursing
Childhood bullying affects over 25% of today’s youth and causes up to 160,000 missed school days per year. Bullying causes short and long term adverse effects to both mental and physical health. Many organizations encourage healthcare providers to take an active role in bullying prevention. However, there has been little research into the role of primary healthcare providers regarding childhood bullying and the effectiveness of different approaches to screening and management.
Therefore the purposes of this dissertation were to a) explore childhood bullying and the role of the healthcare provider in bullying prevention, b) develop and evaluate the psychometric properties …

Perceived Social Support And Self-Care In Patients Hospitalized With Heart Failure, Lyne Chamberlain
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Problem: Heart failure is the most frequent cause for hospital readmissions in Medicare recipients, with an estimated annual cost of $12 billion. Heart failure hospitalizations are also an independent risk factor for increased mortality. Self-care, thought to be enhanced by perceived social support, is key to managing this syndrome, and up to 50% of readmissions are considered the result of inadequate self-care. Purpose: To evaluate perceived social support and self-care characteristics of patients hospitalized with an exacerbation of heart failure, and to compare these characteristics with a study of ambulatory patients with heart failure. In addition, to assess the relationship …

Sisters Of Mercy: The Walking Nun's Siouxland Journey And Experiences In Nursing (1890-1965), Diane L. Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Nursing history is like a kaleidoscope, with prisms of time representing the past, present, and future experiences of nursing. The existence of nursing history is unknown until it is written; similar to the shadowed image of a kaleidoscope mirror is the history of the Sisters of Mercy in Siouxland. Uncovered collections, documents, letters, pictorial archives, and oral histories provide a way to examine the work of the Sisters of Mercy in Siouxland in light of the Careful Nursing Model. On December 12, 1831, Catherine McAuley became the Foundress of the Religious Sisters of Mercy Order in Dublin, Ireland. These Sisters …

Improving Perceptions Of Menopause With An Educational Tool About Non- Pharmacologic Menopause Symptom Management, Megan Larsen
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Practice Innovation Projects
The time period surrounding menopause, or perimenopause, often is associated with many symptoms that are unpleasant and life changing for women. These symptoms, which occur in up to 70% of perimenopausal women, can negatively impact quality of life. There is little information available about how a woman can proactively reduce her menopause symptoms naturally, and many are unable to utilize pharmacologic methods. The literature review included in this paper reveals several different non-pharmacologic treatment methods that are supported by peer reviewed research, including: relaxation and stress reduction, ingestion of soy nuts, acupuncture, lifestyle behavior changes, and exercise. It has been …

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Practice Innovation Projects
Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a debilitating side effect of most chemotherapeutic agents used to treat cancer. To ensure the best possible care and outcomes for patients, nurses should be at the forefront of CIPN education and patient assessments. The purpose of this project was to evaluate an educational intervention for oncology nurses on CIPN and CIPN patient assessment by assessing the knowledge and confidence level of nurses in assessing CIPN before and after an educational session. The methodology for this project was a quasi-experimental one-group pretest multiple posttest design with a convenience sample of nurses employed by the Cancer …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Adequate medication management is a focus of effective care that is often overlooked in caring for adults with comorbid psychiatric and physical conditions, especially in patients who are treated by multiple care providers and have a variety of health issues at the same time. The purpose of this project was to develop evidence-based policies and practice guidelines to reduce polypharmacy in elderly patients in a rural outpatient psychiatric clinic. Bandura's self-efficacy theory was used to inform the project for its value in assessing motivation, capacity for self-regulation, and perceptions of individual ability. An interdisciplinary team of stakeholders explored best practices …

Problem: Difficult conversations and decisions are an unfortunate reality for parents caring for children facing life threatening conditions. Confusing, inadequate, and inconsistent communication by health care providers makes advance care planning difficult in pediatrics.
Design: A mixed methods design was utilized to evaluate the effectiveness of an advance care planning conversation tool, Go Wish- Pediatrics, on the emotional resources and distress experienced by parents caring for children in palliative care.
Methods: For this pilot study, a mailed invitation to participate was sent to 134 parents of children currently enrolled in palliative care which yielded a total of ten participants. …

Difficult And Frustrating? Caring For Those With Chronic And Complex Conditions, Rachel Rossiter, Sharon Brownie
School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa
Caring for people with chronic and complex health needs has become an ever-larger part of everyday nursing. The World Health Organization has identified common and preventable risk factors that are the primary cause of chronic illness worldwide—hypertension, tobacco use, hyperglycaemia, physical inactivity, and overweight or obesity. Nurses now need an expanded range of skills and expertise that will enable them to work effectively with people whose chronic and frequently complex health issues may be seen as difficult and challenging.
This article invites you to think about your experiences of caring for people with chronic and complex conditions. Before you read …

Program For Healthcare Personnel To Improve Anti-Hypertensive Medication Adherence In Black Adults, Verena D. Johnson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Medication nonadherence is a healthcare problem that costs the United States billions of dollars annually. The purpose of this project was to propose an evidence-based program for healthcare personnel to increase the rate of medication adherence in hypertensive Black adults who require daily, oral medication. The transtheoretical model of change was used to explain the process of change and to identify approaches to changing non-adherent behaviors related to medications. Motivational interviewing was used to explain the process that nurse-educators would use to guide patients through the stages of change. In the initial step of this quality improvement program, a convenience …

Improving The Quality Of Care In An Acute Care Facility Through Reeducating Nurses About Managing Central Lines, Jacqueline Raffaele
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Central line-associated bloodstream infections continue to be some of the most deadly hospital-associated infections in the United States. Guided by Lewin's change theory which focuses on prior learning, rejection, and replacement, the purpose of this study was to improve the quality of care patients receive in an acute care facility by reducing life threatening central line infections. The research question examined whether additional education using Venous Access Nurse (VAN) customized newsletters and manager coaching of nurses in an acute care setting would improve the quality of care for patients with central lines. This was a quantitative nonexperimental descriptive retrospective study …

Automated Medication Dispensing Cabinet And Medication Errors, Marie Helen Walsh
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The number of deaths due to medical errors in hospitals ranges from 44,000 to 98,000 yearly. More than 7,000 of these deaths have taken place due to medication errors. This project evaluated the implementation of an automated medication dispensing cabinet or PYXIS machine in a 25-bed upper Midwestern critical access hospital. Lewin's stage theory of organizational change and Roger's diffusion of innovations theory supported the project. Nursing staff members were asked to complete an anonymous, qualitative survey approximately 1 month after the implementation of the PYXIS and again 1 year later. Questions were focused on the device and its use …

Factors Influencing Depression In Men: A Qualitative Investigation, Lori A. Mutiso
Theses and Dissertations--Nursing
The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study is to describe men’s experiences of depression in order to provide direction for future research of the screening, diagnosing, and treatment of men's depression. Previous research indicates that men experience different depressive symptoms than women, and there is a possibility that men's depression is not being adequately captured by current screening standards, which would theoretically lead to a large number of men with unrecognized, undiagnosed, and untreated depression. If this is the case, this may explain the disproportionately low number of men diagnosed with depression compared to women, in contrast to the disproportionately …

This descriptive study summarized data from a child advocacy center to illustrate how such information might be used to profile the scope and character of child sexual abuse (CSA) at the community level. This detailed information is not available from national or state data but is needed to understand the circumstances of the children receiving services and the type of care they may need. Variables included victim demographics, type of sexual abuse and relationship to the perpetrator, and the person to whom the victim was most likely to disclose their sexual assault. A total sample of 841 case reports was …

The Effectiveness Of Combining Simulation And Role Playing In Nursing Education, Shari Lynn Redden
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The profession of nursing is affected by a nursing and nursing faculty shortage that is impacting the ability to produce adequate numbers of nurse graduates to address the healthcare needs of the future. Nursing schools are increasingly using simulation and/or role-playing to supplement the decreased number of nurse faculty and clinical sites in order to be able to continue to enroll nursing school applicants. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine the experiences of nursing students with role-playing and simulation and the extent to which role-playing with simulation is perceived by students as beneficial for learning within the …

Best Practice For A Standardized And Safe Registered Nurse Shift Handoff, Nancy Rankin Ewing
Theses and Dissertations
One of the most important times for the delivery of patient care occurs during the change of shift handoff between professional nurses. This complex interchange of information and responsibility carries with it distinct possibilities for error that can adversely affect a patient’s hospitalization, safety, and the quality of patient care outcomes (Blouin, 2011; Hilligoss & Cohen, 2011). Communication errors, including errors during shift handoff, account for more than 70% of sentinel events that occur in the provision of healthcare in the acute care setting (Federwisch, 2007; Streeter, 2010). Poorly conducted and unstructured shift handoffs are known to result in delayed …

Victims of sexual assault require specialized medical care when they report to hospital emergency departments including physical examination, evidence collection, and emotional support. Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) are medical professionals trained to complete the examination and evidence collection in a prompt and sensitive manner. In fact, where SANE programs exist, emergency room waiting times are shorter, evidence collection improves, and revictimization from untrained staff is reduced. Unfortunately, SANEs are not widely available, particularly in rural areas. This lack of trained examiners employed at local hospitals creates a gap in access to proper care, often resulting in long waits as …
