Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is one of the largest nutritional disorders in the world. Approximately 25% of the world’s population has anemia with 50% of those cases being IDA, according to the World Health Organization. The reduced oxygen carrying capacity associated with anemia can have many adverse effects. Many anemia studies have been done on infants but few have been done on school-aged children. A charity organization in Ecuador has been identifying anemia prevalence among children within a suburb of Guayaquil. To further identify possible risks resulting from anemia, a study comparing cognitive function with anemia rates was conducted in …

The Relationship Between Hearing Status And Cognitive Performance And The Influence Of Depressive Symptoms In The Older Adult, Julie A. Daugherty

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Hearing loss and cognitive impairment are significant health problems, threatening the independent function of older adults. While there appears to be a strong relationship between the two conditions, the mechanisms underlying this association are complex and are not fully elucidated.

The purpose of this secondary analysis was to explore the relationship between hearing ability and cognitive performance in older adults. In addition, this study attempted to examine the role of depressive symptoms in the relationship between hearing loss and cognitive performance. Comprehensive measures of peripheral hearing, central auditory processing and cognitive performance were utilized to examine these relationships in a …

Improving Nurses Knowledge Of Delirium And Implementation Of The R.A.D.A.R. Screening Tool At Two Post Acute Care Facilities In The United States, Kanah Lewallen 2015 Belmont University

Improving Nurses Knowledge Of Delirium And Implementation Of The R.A.D.A.R. Screening Tool At Two Post Acute Care Facilities In The United States, Kanah Lewallen

DNP Projects

Delirium in post acute care patients is under-recognized and linked to poor patient outcomes. Nurses in the post acute care setting are currently not using a standardized tool for assessing delirium, but the literature suggests they should do this routinely. The purposes of this study were to evaluate methods for improving the management of delirium in post acute care and to evaluate the implementation of a new screening tool for delirium (Recognizing Active Delirium As Routine or R.A.D.A.R.). This quasi-experimental study was conducted at two post acute care facilities in an urban location. The study included the implementation of a …

Burnout Syndrome In Hospital Nurses, Priscilla Holdren, David P. Paul III, Alberto Coustasse 2015 Marshall University

Burnout Syndrome In Hospital Nurses, Priscilla Holdren, David P. Paul Iii, Alberto Coustasse

Management Faculty Research

Burnout is a state of mental, physical and emotional stress resulting in a chronic state of pressure or stress at work and is associated with individuals who do “people work” (Aiken and Sloane, 1997), a category into which nurses obviously fall. The number of nurses suffering from burnout has increased over the years, possibly causing negative effects on patient care, working environments and staffing shortages.

Hospitals should focus on creating a healthy work environment in which nurses feel supported by their coworkers and management. Hospitals should also make available stress management programs that address symptoms of burnout and assure safe …

Opioid-Induced Hyperalgesia, Lisa Nieder 2015 University of New England

Opioid-Induced Hyperalgesia, Lisa Nieder

Nurse Anesthesia MSNA Student Capstones

Opioids are a fundamental part in the treatment of pain especially within the perioperative setting. While opioids are routinely administered by nurse anesthetists for the treatment of pain, they can be associated with several undesirable side effects including opioid- induced hyperalgesia (OIH). OIH is a complex phenomenon that has a significant impact on the successful treatment of pain in a surgical setting. While there have been many advances in recent years into the topic of OIH, the mechanisms are complex and remain incompletely understood. OIH is believed to occur from changes in both the peripheral and central nervous systems that …

Buprenorphine And The Anesthesia Considerations: A Literature Review, Elizabeth E. Stern 2015 University of New England

Buprenorphine And The Anesthesia Considerations: A Literature Review, Elizabeth E. Stern

Nurse Anesthesia MSNA Student Capstones

Buprenorphine is a unique pharmaceutical in the management of chronic pain and opioid use disorder (OUD). Buprenorphine is a semisynthetic partial opioid agonist at the mu opioid receptor and an antagonist of the kappa opioid. Buprenorphine Maintenance Therapy (BMT) is utilized for the long-term treatment of patients with OUD. The attraction to this methadone alternative is increased safety profile, more convenient patient access to the drug, as well as increase of ease for the provider. The particular formula used in the US, Suboxone, has properties to discourage intravenous injection to prevent abuse and prevent negative secondary effects of intravascular injections …

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

The Acute Care for the Elderly (ACE) Tracker is an innovative clinical decision support tool generated from the electronic health record (EHR). The EHR delirium marker is derived from variables noted on the ACE Tracker: nursing documentation in the EHR, use of physical restraints, and pharmacological treatment for delirium (use of quetiapine, haloperidol, olanzapine, or risperidone). The combining of these data elements is consistent with a previous study. The EHR delirium marker was intended to be used by the healthcare team during interdisciplinary team meetings and remote consultation by the “e-Geriatrician.” The purpose of this investigation was to examine the …

Fluoxetine Prevents The Development Of Depressive-Like Behavior In A Mouse Model Of Cancer Related Fatigue, Diana M. Norden, Raymond Devine, Sabahattin Bicer, Runfeng Jing, Peter J. Reiser, Loren E. Wold, Jonathan P. Godbout, Donna O. Mccarthy

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Cancer patients frequently suffer from fatigue, a complex syndrome associated with tiredness and depressed mood. Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) can be present at the time of diagnosis, escalates during treatment, and can persist for years after treatment. CRF negatively influences quality of life, limits functional independence, and is associated with decreased survival in patients with incurable disease. We have previously shown that increased pro-inflammatory cytokine expression in the brain contributes to depressive- and fatigue-like behaviors in a mouse model of CRF. Inflammatory cytokines increase the activity of indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) and kynurenine 3-monooxygenase (KMO), which competitively reduce serotonin synthesis. Reduced serotonin …

Hiv Testing For Pmtct In Tanzania: Time To Move From ‘Voluntary’ To ‘Mandatory’?, Kahabi Isangula, Audrey Holmes, Sharon Brownie 2015 Aga Khan University

Hiv Testing For Pmtct In Tanzania: Time To Move From ‘Voluntary’ To ‘Mandatory’?, Kahabi Isangula, Audrey Holmes, Sharon Brownie

School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa

Introduction: Every year many infants are infected with HIV, mostly in sub Saharan Africa. This is predominantly attributed to mother-to-child or “vertical” transmission during pregnancy, labor and delivery, and breastfeeding. Advances in antiretroviral therapy (ART) and funding have made the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV more affordable in sub-Saharan Africa. However, despite this advance and its potential in PMTCT, the uptake of HIV testing among pregnant women as an entry point to PMTCT services remains unsatisfactory in many countries.

Methods & Results: In the present paper, authors’ present a viewpoint that supports mandatory HIV testing for pregnant women …
